Why do we take ballet arm movements and their terms as well as ballet position terms in belly dance?
Isn't belly dance older than ballet? Why put ballet names on a dance that was born eons before ballet was ever invented?

Re: Why ballet terms in belly dance?
Tue, November 13, 2007 - 3:00 AMImo, I believe it is to facilitate/brake down of the moves for teaching purposes. I personally never formally took ballet so I can never remember the "positions" names like 5th, 2nd and 1st. I also think it's to bring belly dance into a more acceptable dance form instead of a "seedy" dance form like so many people (general public, some like to call it) think it is. Jazz dance has "jazz 1st", and "jazz 2nd", which came from ballet terms, so I think the terms for belly dance should be "sharque (sp?) 1st" and so on. -

Tue, November 13, 2007 - 11:18 PMDo you think that ballet terms are appropriate in describing the execution of the moves to this dance? -

Wed, November 14, 2007 - 1:57 AMNot really but what other way could you describe arm positions in relation to dance if the student has a backround in various forms of dance like ballet or jazz?
