Octopuses are SO SMART. But then again, I'm not sure intelligence is the criteria by which we should decide what creatures get to live and which get "pounded" and fried alive with their limbs severed... Anyway, I fully concur: This is something we should do something about. Do the folks in the other veg tribes know about this tribe -- like have you provided a link in Go Vegan, etc? I'm into taking this on together. What should we do?

PETA protests the Food Network's abuse of octopuses!

On the "Octopus Battle" episode of the Food Network's popular Iron Chef
show (a cross between Ultimate Fighting Champion and Julia Child),
which aired in June [2000], the Iron Chef and his challenger prepared a
sickening dish called "pounded octopus." Live octopuses were beaten
with mallets, broiled, and fried and had their tentacles severed.
Viewers would have been outraged if the chefs had treated live chickens
or pigs in this manner; please let the Food Network know that such
treatment of octopuses is equally offensive.

Octopuses are fascinating animals who have keen senses of sight, touch,
taste, and smell. They can learn by watching others-a trait
supposedly restricted to higher vertebrates. And they communicate
through color, changing from orange to white to blue in the blink of an
eye. These swimming slide shows aren't just a form of camouflage:
Researcher Martin Moynihan speculated that cephalopods' ever-changing
patterning is a type of visual language-complete with signals for
nouns and verbs.

Please remind the Food Network that cruelty to any animal is not
