I just purchased a cumbus saz and would like to know if there are any instructional videos out there to help get me started with technique and some maqams and maybe a song or two. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've never seen a DVD or VHS on baglama, but there are more resources than ever on the Internet. Check out the older posts on this thread; I think this topic has come up before, and there are plenty of links for saz websites scattered throughout.

I wasted some money on some instructional VCDs from Turkey that were completely
worthless for me. For videos, Youtube is probably your best bet.

Congratulations on the cumbus saz. For me, the cumbus saz is much better
suited to Arabic music and makes a great stand-in for a buzuq. Not so good
      for the Turkish baglama music.

      As always, YMMV!

    Hi Steve

May I ask where did you buy your saz from? I am new to this and in the market to purchase one but don't know where. I need some advice to buy a half-decent one with reasonable price.

    thanks

      Hi,
I got it from Mid-east (www.mid-east.com). It seems to be made pretty well and they are a very good place to get it from. They carry a lot of stringed instruments from around the world and see to be very knowledgeable about their products.

el g, i recommend touch the earth. they are a small company and i personally know the makers and the guy who selects them for touch the earth. they will do you right! i don't know about prices, you may find cheaper, but these baglama will be good w/o the risk. and online sight unseen instruments is very risky...

also, i know that there will be a new saz instructional dvd coming in about january... i'll post more when it is available.

      best...

    Hi Everyone!!!
I like to thank you all for all your advices. I am considering to get one from Touch The Earth. David, I think you are right. They do have some nice ones and reasonably priced too. But I do have a question to you all. Since I am totally new to this, I am also knew to some of terminology used, like (pick-up). What is pick-up? Apparently, Some Sazs come with a pick-up and some don’t. What is it? What is it do and how important is it? Is it some sort of an attachment? An electronic attachment of some sort? Not that I am baying an electric Saz. Any help would be appreciated.

    Regards to you all

A pickup attaches to the instrument so that it can be plugged into an amplifier. If you are intending on only playing your saz acoustic, you don't need one at all.

re; pickup: i guess we are talking now only about standard wooden sazes and not cumbus saz?.. for saz, generally pick ups are cheap, maybe only $30 - 50 extra. i'd say even if you don't think you need to plug it in, i would suggest getting one, you may change your mind and it will be more expensive for someone outside of turkey to put one in. plus, the resale value of the instrument will be higher if you decide you don't like it. they are put inside the instrument and are not seen, there is a hole in the bottom to insert the instrument cable.

one more thing i thought of about saz... you may want to get a long neck saz. by using a capo(it makes the frets less in number by attaching to the neck) you can learn and try both long and short neck styles of playing to see what you prefer. just a thought if you don't really know which one you want to learn. enjoy...

Forgive my ignorance friends; this may be a silly question. But I am buying a Non- electronic (electric Saz). Does this mean that a Pick-up would affect it’s sound quality? How so? Why would a non-electric instrument (Saz) needs an electronic device like Pick-up to enhance its sound? I just don’t get this and I want to make the right decision before anything else.

One other thing, right now I am in northern Nevada, close to northern California, anyone knows any place in northern Nevada or California that actually sells Saz. maybe I should go in person and check these physically.

        Thanks everyone

It is truly educating to hear from you all.

el g, this is a pick up: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pick...hnology%29

it is made to electronically amplify accoustic instruments(almost all instruments are accoustic - synths/samplers are not of course). it's how the electric guitar became electric. they are generally used in place of microphones to amplify instruments because microphones have their own limitations(like feed back). it is used on accoustic instruments all the time - gtrs, clarinets, violins, etc... especially in live settings. saz is just about the quietest instrument i know, and if you ever want to play with another instrument or in a group you will probably need to amplify it - or it will not be heard - this is why most people want to have pick ups inside - even if they don't usually need it.

yes you're correct, this will change the sound. but then you have things to 'fix' it, and help make it more natural sounding. these are what some people use: www.lrbaggs.com/html/produ...eamps.shtml

if you need more answers go to any local music shop, they won't know a saz probably, but they know about pick ups.

don't know where you can find in nevada/ cal.... good luck.

"yes you're correct, this will change the sound. "

but ONLY when you plug it in to an amplifier. the saz sound will NOT be affected when played acoustically.

There's something good on the way. I can't tell any more until it actually comes out. :) But it shouldn't be too long now.

How's that for an air of mystery?

No really, I'm pretty sure that I know what Bob is talking about. Just hold tight. If what I've seen in any indication it should be the best of it's kind when it comes available.

It's being produced in Turkey by an native English speaker and an English speaking saz player. That's all I'm at liberty to say except that if the quality of the production is anywhere near the producer's other work we are all in for a treat. As soon as my tongue is unbound on the matter I'll be happy to share what I know. But of course, the producer himself will begin promotion when the project is ready. It's hard because one never knows whether everything will come together the one hopes and it is inadvisable to enumerate one's galliformes prenatally.
