Just so that everyone's aware:
Any Tribe.net member affected by one or more of the following...
-*Just* created their Tribe.net account,
-Has a blank profile,
-Has no userpic,
-Has no one on their "friends" list,
...is someone I'm probably going to have reservations about approving for this comunity.
IT'S NOTHING PERSONAL. But it *is* sort of "Modding 101". These are often red-flag indicators of trolls and/or "sockpuppets" (and what comm needs those?)
-Taking the time to fill out your profile and interests tells us a bit more about you. Especially if you have a preexisting website detailing your work, and include the link.
-Uploading a photo means we'll recognize you if we bump into you at an event.
-Knowing other members and putting them on your "friends" list is a reassurance that you're not just a phantom someone conjured up to create trouble.
So my apologies if you've had an "add me" request lingering in limbo, but this is just a precaution. It should probably be in the comm rules; I'll condense and paste something to that effect later this afternoon.

Tue, July 17, 2007 - 8:11 AMSounds good...I'm inviting people currently so that will be helpful information. :-) -

Re: Approval of new members (mod post)
Tue, July 17, 2007 - 8:31 AMThanks for spreading the word, man. :)
Like any discussion forum, there's going to be times here that members disagree, perhaps very strongly or heatedly.
Granted, it's not the only, or even the most contraversial, SCA-themed community on Tribe.net (the threads from Cathyn's "SCA" tribe which address R&D banishments, or the pending lawsuit against the society, come to mind; *man* did those seem to spawn some viciousness and sockpuppetry...!) we're just asking that everyone remain respectful. And one aspect of that includes taking ownership of one's words.
I don't expect this to be a huge problem; but about three members are stuck in "pending" mode, and I felt they deserved to know why. -

Tue, July 17, 2007 - 1:43 PMThanks for modding. Did you send them a personal message with this information? Since they might not be checking the tribe. -

Re: Approval of new members (mod post)
Tue, July 17, 2007 - 2:22 PMI did, though not till the "official" denials went out this afternoon; I've spent a while internally wrangling over the best way to compose the verbage. : )
But in each denial-of-entry there was a link to this thread (which is viewable to the public.) There's nothing saying that, with a few adjustments, they can't apply again.
:::sigh::: I've just noticed, over the last 12 years or so, how easy it is to hide behind the anonymity of a keyboard and say utterly ghastly things without fear of reprisal. As Scott Adams says in Dilbert: "in cyberspace, everyone is a bully."
For this comm I kind of wanted there to be an implicit understand that, "hey, if you haven't physically met the person you're responding to, YA BETTER BET YOU'RE GONNA, at some point!!! So be sure to talk to them as if you were looking them in the eye --- or might have to do so at Odyssey Coffee the next morning."
Because we ALL love Odyssey Coffee (amirite?!?!!!)
