Busking locations at Pennsic

Okay, so, let's talk about busking locations. I'm going to make a list of the places that I can think of where I've traditionally seen buskers (not Midnight Madness spots). After we have a list of places we can discuss sound bubbles and distance between "spots". Add yours below:

Beggar's Row
Serengeti food court - end nearest troll
Serengeti food court - unshaded picnic tables
South central corner of Serengeti - north end of Serengeti food court
Tree near Post Office/Bank
Grassy area near back of barn

In front of various merchants such as:
Historic Enterprises/Angevin Treasures region
Near Middle Kingdom gates (across the street near that merchant area)

Reasonable people don’t need rules and vulgar people will not follow them.

I'm sorry you feel that way. I am in no way trying to impose rules (this tribe does not belong to me) but a discussion was opened so that the reasonable people at least can work things out. This thread is specifically for the discussion of where the locations are at Pennsic so that we can figure out how far apart they are... and then how big groups' "sound bubbles" are. Hopefully the reasonable people will cooperate, are you reasonable, or vulgar?

It’s not a feeling that I am expressing it’s a fact. Just as the sky is blue and water is wet.
As for the state of my reasonably or vulgarity, well that depends on who you talk to. I am sure you can decide that for your self. My view of my self does not always mach the way others view me.
Busking in Chicago is much more harsh than at Pennsic. So form my point of view there is a natural law to busking.
Let as assume that we all know something about busking at Pennsic. If I see you I will not step on your pitch. You are free to step on mine if you like. If we like each other and we works well together we can share a pitch. If a load group shows up I move. If someone is at the pitch I like I move to another one or I explore a new area.
Busking at Pennsic is a cake walk.

Rather than assuming that it is a polarized situation, I'm willing to believe that between those who will willingly defer to fellow buskers, and those who will refuse to, there is a third category of folks who are new to the scene and just require a little clarification.

And yes; having friends who busk in NYC, comparatively speaking Pennsic spatial issues should not be all that hard to hack out.

"Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around the laws" - Plato

I really like that line....and will gank it and tell everyone that I wrote it.

that is a very good way of looking at busking.

I have also found that when some super popular areas started getting 'regulated', it stopped being busking and started being unpaid shows that benifited the space and not the performer. (Baltimore Inner Harbor for example)

busking has a very natural law that weeds out the less good performers. it is fluid and moves around.

I personally respect all the acts that I see, and when I am busking, I make sure that I am not walking on someone elses pitch. I do not get upset if I see someone is sitting in a spot that I like to busk. I move someplace else and sometimes have discovered a great untapped pitch!

some of the hidden gems include but are not limited to -
      yup, the Inner Vagabond
      Merakesh (ocean's shop - inside)
in front of Tribe Badir - Miranda's shop
at the far end of the lower market, in front of the mall area

there are more, it's just a matter of me thinking about it.....

(I think you've got most or all of them; I'll just add that the two coffeehouses also encourage playing, but I don't know how often I've seen a hat or bowl set out.)

When estimating the size of your sound-bubble, it helps to take into consideration the type of music/entertainment being provided, because that will affect how the accoustics carry.

    These are Lorelei's estimates:

-Mimes, jugglers, and quiet storytellers can be spaced together as close as 10-20 feet and not really conflict with one another's performance.

-For soloists, small a capella groups, and/or quiet instrumentalists, it would be reasonable to expect a "personal space" radius of about 23-35 feet.

-A large vocal ensemble or loud instrumental group, would need a radius of about 40-50 feet to not create an aural conflict with other performers.

Also, high-frequency sounds -- soprano voices, treble woodwinds, etc -- tend to carry a LOT farther than low-frequency sounds of the same decible output. They're the last type of sound-wave to get absorbed by solid objects.

Drums are loud (bass or not) because they simply pour out more decibles. Hurdy-gurdies and bagpipes, same deal.
