Greetings all! I'm new to the SCA and am located in the Barony of Settmour Swamp in the East Kingdom. I'm interested in learning to fence SCA-style. I have no previous fencing experience. There appear to be significant differences between modern fencing and SCA fencing, so I'm not sure that signing up for modern fencing lessons is the best way to learn rapier combat. What would be a good way to learn to fence SCA-style for a complete novice?

Thanks in advance,

Found this on the Settmour website.

"There are indoor heavy weapon and fencing practices every Wednesday night at the Reformed Church of Nutley. Doors open at 6:30 pm and are open to 10:00pm or so. It costs money to rent this site, so a $5.00 donation is requested! If you have questions please email Sir Tanaka Raiko. Should you get lost, Tanaka's pager is 201-232-9337".

I would make that my first contact and let them know you would like to look into rapier. That way, someone might have a spare set of gear for you to try out.

    Hope that might help.

      Michael,
Having prior olympic fencing experience is not required of newcomers to SCA fencing. Also, the modern fencing schools and clubs will be considerably more expensive than the $5 your local group charges per week. If you are currently attending meetings you are likely already paying some portion if not all of that rental fee. I can't give advice regarding the fencing itself, but you might want to do some aerobic exercise to get into shape either before or during your training. Running and bicycling are good. Fencing involves a bit of leg work. Being able to run backwards is also a plus.

Thanks, Fulke - I've been to the Nutley practice. (I actually live in Nutley). I didn't see any rapier practice, but it's certainly worth a try to contact Sir Tanaka again - he was very helpful and accomodating with me before. Thanks for the reminder!
