I will put in some "funny to know" facts in this thread.
Did you know.....that Sweden is the worlds third largest exporter of music. Only USA and UK exports more music then Sweden. I'm sure of that you have listen to many swedish bands on the radio.

Tue, February 12, 2008 - 12:19 AMYeah but 90% of that export is Abba.

Re: Did you know?
Tue, February 12, 2008 - 4:12 AMHe he
Swedish Metal is quite big too. Most people have heard about bands like Meshuggah, In Flames, Entombed, Darkane, Yngwie Malmsteen, Opeth, etc etc. -
-
Re: Did you know?
Tue, March 4, 2008 - 10:47 AMU.S. music companies don't want us to know what good metal, real metal is. That way we're OK with listening to U.S. crap on the radio. -
-
Re: Did you know?
Tue, March 4, 2008 - 11:16 AMThe situation is the same in Sweden. It's all about money, and what's "popular". Record companies decides (in most cases) what people "should listen to". They must sell records, and plenty of them...........
It's enough to listen to the radio one day to realize how much crap they really play. -
-
Re: Did you know?
Tue, March 4, 2008 - 11:58 AMJust letting you know that even though some of us may have heard of the great metal bands you listed, most likely we didn't hear anything about them on the radio.
(But we hear plenty of Papa Roach ???!!) -
-
Re: Did you know?
Tue, March 4, 2008 - 12:44 PMHa ha
To find good music you must often search the net or something. Listen to the radio isn't the best way to find quality music, all crap that they play on the radio can drive you nuts sometimes.

Re: Did you know?
Fri, March 7, 2008 - 8:53 AMNot about music, but another possibly fun fact question. (from an American who doesn't know these things)
Is "football" as big a deal in the Scandinavian countries as it is in UK, South America, and some other European nations?
Are there Football Hooligans and football riots in Scandinavia?
(And I put football in quotes because I'm American. We call your football soccer, and no one else in the world plays our football, which is similar to rugby but still different.) -
-
Re: Did you know?
Fri, March 7, 2008 - 9:17 AMWell, we have both football and football riots in Sweden, but nothing to compare to the riots in countries like UK and Polen. Yes, the riots in Polen are among the worst in Europe. Both football and hockey are very big in Sweden. The biggest riots is between the two biggest Stockholm teams AIK and Djurgården, their supporters really hates each other.
People don't take football as serious as in the big football countries, like Italy and Brazil were people almost dies in heart attacks if their team looses. But if Sweden does well, like in the world championships 1994 (in usa), people will get a bit crazy. People in my city watched every game and celebrated every single win, they even took a bath in the fountain of the city square. :D
And (surprise), we have both "American Football" teams and Baseball teams in Sweden. -
-
Re: Did you know?
Fri, March 7, 2008 - 9:46 AMWe have "American Football" teams here in Finland too: male and female teams. I wouldn't say that Finns are passionate and crazed about futis like they are in the UK, Brazil, Spain or Portugal, but they do enjoy it very much. It may be so because there is only a short time to play it when the fields are not wet and muddy or covered in snow. There are not hooligans or riots. There is good natured groups of fans that are seated across the stadium from each other and they bring drums or something have have chants which they insult the other fan group with. Finns are crazy about sports and play all kinds of sports all the time. -
-
Re: Did you know?
Fri, March 7, 2008 - 9:53 AMGood to know, guys. Thanks.
We don't have soccer riots. We don't have football riots. We do occasionally destroy a town by partying in the street if they've won. (Boston and Chicago, for example.)
A few years ago we had a basketball riot. (?? It was weird.) But I think that was mostly because basketball is still the only game we play where the fans have "access" to the players. (The players are separated by fencing or glass or anything.)
And there's always beer. -
-
Re: Did you know?
Fri, March 7, 2008 - 10:27 AMSpeaking of riots and beer. Drunk swedes are among the worst thing you can see. Just ask Danes or some ski resorts in Switzerland what they think of drunk swedes. We swedes are known to be pretty shy and polite, but when we are drunk all the shyness and the polite behaviour is, gone, completely.
In fact, the violence in Sweden has increased much under the past 10 years. For exemple, swedish neonazis are among the most violent you can find. Shortage of policemen makes things worse............
Perhaps Sweden isn't that nice place anymore, we are having the same problems as rest of Europe these days.

Re: Did you know?
Fri, March 7, 2008 - 9:54 AMMy fiancee was in Bergen in October when Brann beat the Oslo team and roughly 10,000 people were in Sentrum watching the game on a huge screen. When Brann won, the entire town paraded around with a drum corp and sang songs for hours.
Yeah, I'd say they're pretty damn into their football. :-)
Oh, there were many niteclubs we went into that had signs saying, "No Club Colors", meaning they didn't want the football fans starting fights just because of what they wore. -

Re: Did you know?
Fri, March 7, 2008 - 10:08 AMSpeaking of fanatic, i have never experienced anything like it. When Ingemar Stenmark were king of slalom in the 70's over half of Sweden stopped completely when Ingemar Stenmark competed. People refused to work and watched tv sets in the windows of radio stores or listened to the radio. Their bosses didn't said a thing about it because they watched Ingmar themselves. :D
If Ingemar ended up in second place the whole country were in deep sorrow.
My teacher in school told all the kids........
- We must take a break and go to the schools tv-room and watch Ingemars second run. when we came into the room the whole school was already there. :D
I doubt that we will see someone as popular as Ingemar Stenmark, ever.
Okey, Bjorn Borg was popular too, but not even close to the popularity of Ingemar Stenmark.
I doubt that any country could be more fanatic then that. :D -

Re: Did you know?
Fri, March 7, 2008 - 10:25 AMThat's cool.
The best we do here is TV. There was a time in the '70s when colleges couldn't schedule classes between 1 pm and 2 pm because everyone was in the common room watching General Hospital (a soap opera).
America's too big to agree on one sport, let alone one athlete.
Though, if your name is "King of Slalom," I think I'd bow for that, too. -
-
Re: Did you know?
Fri, March 7, 2008 - 10:31 AMIngemar Stenmark was an exception, i have never seen anything like it. And i don't think that something similar is going to happend again.
Speaking of american tv series, i grew up watching american series.
Sweden are the most americanized country in whole Europe. :D
We even have the tradition to watch Donald Duck on christmas eve...........and have done so for the past 30 years.
Weird?
Hmm, yes. -
-
Re: Did you know?
Fri, March 7, 2008 - 10:39 AMI'll guess that it is plenty of things that most americans don't know about Sweden. Then it's good to have a place like this and exchange thoughts and information. :)
-
Re: Did you know?
Fri, March 7, 2008 - 10:45 AMI don't mean to mock your Christmas traditions, but I really *really* hate Donald Duck.
Daffy all the way, baby. (Looney Tunes are better than Disney.)
I've been a huge fan of Daffy Duck for… god… 20 years. Maybe slightly more. I have a bookcase fully of Daffy at home, I have Daffy pieces on my desk at work. I carry a Daffy keychain. I have 2 Daffy Duck tattoos. My first nickname – DuckAmuck – is from the best Daffy cartoon ever. My second nickname – Ducky – came from the first one.
Speaking of fanatics… -

Re: Did you know?
Fri, March 7, 2008 - 10:53 AMHe he
Okey, now i understand your nickname better.
I can imagine that watching donald Duck as a christmas tradition sounds pretty weird for all non swedes. And it is a bit weird to be honest.
Hmmmm, wait a minute, we are not alone to have this weird tradition..........
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/From...All_of_You
Speaking of Sweden. We are a quite small country with about 9.5 million people mostly thanks to our hospitality to host plenty of immigrants. But we are quite good at sports for being such small country.
We took plenty of medals in the Winter Olympics 2006.

Sat, March 8, 2008 - 7:46 PMMy grandparents on my Mother's side were Swedish and they would make pepper koken? cookies and glug for the holidays. I loved the cookies but they wouldn't let me drink the glug. Is that still the norm in Sweden?

Sat, March 8, 2008 - 11:31 PMPepparkakor!
Pepparkakor is a must every christmas in Sweden.
I think it's quite okey if kids drinks glögg in Sweden novadays. They even serve it on the christmas market in the square of my city every year and i see plenty of kids drinking glögg.

Re: Did you know?
Sun, March 9, 2008 - 7:39 PMIn America if any little kids were found drinking glögg their parents would be arrested. In the US people are very uptight about that sort of thing. glögg is a gateway drug. First glögg, then pot, then heroin, then crack.

Re: Did you know?
Sun, March 9, 2008 - 8:19 PMIn my town, they've now decided that it's a good idea to cite the parents for kids drinking on their property, even if they weren't home and had no idea. Love that.

Re: Did you know?
Mon, March 10, 2008 - 1:43 AMWe have glögg with alcohol and without alcohol in Sweden. ;)
The second one is aimed for kids.
You must be 18 years old to buy beer in Sweden and 20 years old to buy alcohol from systembolaget. Yet we have problems with drunk kids, 12 years old..........
Home brewing isn't exactly unusual in sweden, and in many cases older people buy alcohol for the younger ones.
13 years old person - Can you fix some booze for our party?
25 years old person - Okey, i can buy some for ya at the systembolaget, but you'll have to pay for it, i want 100 kr for the job.
13 years old person - Well, okey. -
-
Re: Did you know?
Mon, March 10, 2008 - 8:51 AMYeah, that scenario is common here, too. The kids will offer to pay for help, actually. -
-
Re: Did you know?
Mon, March 10, 2008 - 9:42 AMNovadays you must be 18 years old to buy cigarettes and snus (snuff) in Sweden. So we have the same scenario for tobacco in Sweden. -

Re: Did you know?
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 2:10 PMDid you know that Sweden is home to the manufacturer of one of THE best sewing machine companies in the world?
It's also, oddly enough, a tractor manufacturer, somehow, too.
Husqvarna!

And what makes their stuff so good? -

Re: Did you know?
