This tribe has been quiet for quite a long time. So… why not have a thread about where we're from combined with how we feel about the election of Barack Obama – on a worldwide scale please.

I'm from a small town in Illinois, not Chicago.

I'm excited to see an Illinoisan as President, first of all. Maybe it will help change the perception of people from Illinois and Chicago. We're not all mobsters and we're not all corn farmers.

Secondly, I'm really excited to see how this will change the perception of the U.S. abroad. A lot of countries have expressed a similar thought publicly, which is really nice. Obama appears to be a polar opposite to George Bush on every scale – color, demeanor, intelligence, understanding and willingness to listen.

I look forward to seeing how everyone else feels about it.

I'm really excited about a possible end to the war and torture, and abuses of power, and a President who completely disregards the rule of law etc etc etc.

The upside is that maybe we can get something accomplished in this country now.

The downside is that one of my clients, a political satirist, is likely out of a job, meaning less recording work for me. :-p

You're kidding, right? Government and politics will NOT magically start working in completely unridiculable ways just because someone competent is at the helm.

And hey… Newt Gingrich may become chair of the Republican party… isn't that enough?

I *am* kidding. But it sure is nice to have something like that to joke about!

I think it is fantastic that Obama won.

At last you got rid of Bush. :D

Well, the government in Sweden really sucks.

I voted for Obama in the general election. I also voted for him in the primary, because the polls correctly showed that he could defeat McBush--I mean McCain. I think that Obama qualifies as a not-Bush. Problem is: The U.S.A. has moved so far in the neo-Fascist direction that it'll take time to completely undo the damage. To a certain extent, we have Bushism without Bush. The plight of prisoners at Bagram Air Base is a case in point.

Some of them were captured on the battlefield. Of these prisoners, some saw themselves as patriots fighting against foreign invaders. Some were poor people who couldn't make a living in the private sector. Others saw themselves as fighting for the greater glory of Islam. Anyway these prisoners deserve the full rights of POWs under international law.

Another category of prisoners were innocent people who were accused of terrorism--but with no real evidence--and turned in for bounties paid by Uncle Sam. There may even be some real terrorists as well! Both of these categories of people deserve due process of law.

"No US rights' for Bagram inmates

Detainees being held at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan cannot use US courts to challenge their detention, the US says.

The justice department ruled that some 600 so-called enemy combatants at Bagram have no constitutional rights.

Most have been arrested in Afghanistan on suspicion of waging a terrorist war against the US.

The move has disappointed human rights lawyers who had hoped the Obama administration would take a different line to that of George W Bush.
