I heard on American National Public Radio (Marketplace) that Sweden has a good answer to pension plans, balancing possible market gains with possible market losses.
In America, we like to make you think you're going to have a pension for the whole 30-40 years that you work, and then cancel your pension about 5 years before it's time for you to retire. So that way we don't have to keep paying your pension while you live anther 20-30 years.

Wed, April 23, 2008 - 2:24 PMOr the large corporation grossly mismanages the pension fund, and then goes bankrupt. Then the Feds will 'graciously' step in and pay less than 40 cents on the dollar to the retirees.
