2008 Art Theme @ Burning Man!

The American Dream!

And so from hour to hour we ripe and ripe,
And then from hour to hour we rot and rot;
And thereby hangs a tale.
--William Shakespeare, As You Like It

This year's art theme is about patriotism -- not that kind which freights the nation state with the collective weight of ego, but a patriotism that is based upon a love of country and culture. Leave ideology at home; forget the blue states and the red; let parties, factions and the so-called issues that divide us fall away. Flag burning or flag worship play no part in this year's theme. Ask yourself, instead, a more immediate question. What has America achieved that you admire or feel proud of? What has it done or failed to do that makes you feel dismayed? Put blame aside, in this election year, and dare to ask an even greater question: What can postmodern America, this stumbling, roused, half-conscious giant, yet give to the world?

You making haste on decay: not blameworthy; life is good, be it stubbornly
long or suddenly
A mortal splendor: meteors are not needed less than mountains:
shine, perishing republic.
-- Robinson Jeffers, Shine Perishing Republic

In 2008, the Burning Man will stand atop a high-rise tower. Instead of windows, this edifice will feature images of flags that represent the countries of the world. Ranging from Canada to Chad, from Brazil to Burundi, from Vatican City to the Republic of China, these 244 symbols will shine in the night, gleaming like cut gems upon the surface of a jewel box. The United States of America will be among them. Each country can be said to represent a dream no less radiant or precious than the rest. Each nation may be viewed as a container of identity; yet each one can be said to be a glimmering illusion, an arbitrary entity defined by boundaries on a map. All of us are immigrants to Black Rock City. What can we dream America to be?

Burning man is the American Dream - of sorts..?

How many countries would even tollerate such a gathering?
How many countries would let such an event happen on government land for a triffle $843,000 USD?
America for all it's problems is still a damn fun place to live.

My vision of the true American Dream would be a place where we only needed the base constitution and first amendment to the constitution (with a few changes):

No government agency or establishment shall make any law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise or choice to not exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press or of individual radical self expression; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances, nor to pass stupid laws that cannot reasonably be enforced without abridging the basic human rights and liberties protected by this amendment..

and the 10 principles of Burning Man as guidelines.

Where does this number come from, and if it's accurate, how do the people who charge that rate calculate such a high figure? I am appalled by that, I don't consider it triffle. That seems to be much higher than I would expect for the cleanup and upkeep of the land, unless there were some severe environmental damage done to it by Burning Man participants. If such damage has occured, I'd consider it incongruent witht he ten principles.

Wow...they've come up with a way to burn the symbols of a whopping assload of countries, and make it look 'good' in the process, or at least that's the idea.

I mean, they can SAY that flag burning has nothing to do with it, but that's like saying that you're free to go, as long as you can get out of the padlocked iron cage.

    I LIKE IT.

BURN THE FLAGS!! DOWN WITH ALL NATION-STATES!! THE AMERICAN DREAM IS IN FLAMES!!!

    Wake up!

    XXXOOO,
    Me

"In general, the American Dream can be defined as having the opportunity and freedom that allows all citizens to achieve their goals in life through hard work and determination alone. Today, it generally refers to the idea that one's prosperity depends upon one's own abilities and hard work, not on a rigid class structure, though the meaning of the phrase has changed over America's history. No matter how it's phrased, no matter how its gussied up, no matter how many garter belts and moop-boas and underpants you try to hide the truth or ameliorate your own better judgement with:

it's a sucky, sucky theme; it alienates the stunning majority of people on first impression, it backhandedly insults every other nation on earth, it's based on a hill of overt, cynical, intelligence-insulting lies. It's ugly, stupid, and utterly demeaning. It's the fifth cherry on top of the BM UTTERLY FAILS sundae.

      Loki thanks...
I do like the fact that tribe exists because of BM and that my awareness to other art forms has been broaden by it, I have to say that picking the fable we tell school children as a theme for something that I believed was created as a direct reaction and response to a culture that was losing it's identity to corporate manifestos written on the pages of the silver screens is contradictory.

I do think it funny that they are burning many flags in an effigy to something, but at this point have have to wonder what, Google one of their main sponsors. May-be next year the theme will be pick your favorite NASCAR and represent it's sponsorship in a glowing light.

However the creation of such an event that has willfully spawned so many other artistic inspirations is of value in our society today. We are a failing culture of homogenization and if anyone is willing to inspire others simple to think, respond and create, then to me, they are valuable.

I am going to be very curious to see what art comes from this years social experiment in the sand. I have a feeling that very few of the participants are going to be able to separate their artistic endeavors from any social statement when our country is not only in an election year but also a war.

[Who the hell am I kidding, we have been at war with some other nation state our entire existence. Only for about five years did we keep it on our own soil and we did so much damage that we almost split the country.]
