I'm a Spanish teacher from Ohlone College in Fremont, CA. While I have taught Spanish at the college & university level, I have also taught English literature, Critical Thinking, Creative Writing and Technical/Formal Writing at both the High School and college level. I've discovered that each level and learning environment presents its own unique teaching challenges. What are your ideas on teaching language to different grades and/or ages (or a mixed group of students of all ages)?

  • I'm an instructor of English language learners (ELL, better known as ESL) also at Ohlone College in Fremont, CA. I have had the privilege and excitement of working with Ms. Lemon and so when she sent me this link, I just had to check it out. I've been teaching for about 28 years; all levels; mostly English and Deaf education. I agree that each level and environment has its own challenges, but I also think that good teaching is just good teaching regardless of where, what level, or to whom. So, what is good teaching? For me....being in tune with your students, their goals, and their needs and finding whatever strategies and tools that enable you to best meet them. I'm a technology freak, and am always on the hunt for new applications of web tools. Quia is high on the list, and I likei t even better as it expands to allow for audio, video and image input. If you also like technology for teaching, you must check out voicethread!! Here's a free web application that allows you and your students to upload pictures, documents, video, powerpoints and make comments on them all in one media venue. Try for yourself!! www.voicehread.com
  • I really enjoyed the workshop this past weekend at Myrtle Beach. Learning more about Quia was great! I am a MYP and IB teacher in Florence, S.C. I teach MYP 3rd and 4th year Spanish and IB 5th year Spanish. I love teaching in this program! I tried the online test by Quia and it was great! The students were allowed to take the test twice. They loved getting inmediate feedback to their reponses. It was great seeing the expression on their faces and some little shouts of Yeah! when they got a difficult question right! Each student had a laptop from the libray in class. It was also great to have it scored by Quia. i just wish I could borrow the laptops from the library more often.I am in love with Quia!

  • Hi Dr. I am a new Spanish teacher, just doing my last semester, and I have been using your sites to help myself and now my students to understand the many specifics of Spanish. Just wanted to thank you for putting so much great information out there for us novice teachers to help us solidify our teaching skills. I hope that it is ok to use your information in conjunction with what I teach? I always let my co-op know where I get my information. -H
    • Hola! Weclome to our tribe!
Feel free to use my info - I only ask that people cite where they got it from -which you do anyway! I'm glad you find it helpful! I'm still trying to update it since the format is pretty dated, so any suggestions are always welcome!
