WELCOME:
Hey all! I am pleased to announce that beginning this week Scorched Nuts 2009 planning is underway. Although no theme is set yet, we plan to focus on bringing more large scale and interactive art and theme camps to this year's event. Due to the highly successful fund raiser Carnivolution, we will be able to supply art grants to many people who apply, as well as having a good fund to start the necessary arrangements. While we love Hannon's Camp America and hope to return with some of our events, we are currently begin to search for other spaces which may serve our growing community. If you know of a property you think we should check out, please send me a link so we can find out if it might be a good fit.
MY ROLE:
As of this time I am considering myself the General Coordinator, the position I have held the past 2 years. My responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Sets agenda and facilitates meetings and work weekends. Oversees events projects and coordinates team leaders. Creates identification for team leads and volunteers. Secures and signs for land contract, permits and insurance (with assistance from Logistics). Liasons with venue. Makes general purchases and performs on site management for the event.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITES:
Many of you have filled positions as Team Leads in the past, and we welcome you back if you are interested. However we would also like to open up opportunities for new people to get in on the planning and creation of SN09. If you are interested in volunteering you will need to attend the meeting on 2/8/09 (location TBA). This will give us a chance to meet in person and break down volunteers into groups. Areas that you can volunteer for this year are:

Here is a list of upcoming dates to mark down. Locations will be announced at least 2 weeks before each meeting date. Some meetings will be open tot the public, but others will be for lead volunteers only. All dates are not set in stone.

THEME:
I would like to open up a discussion on themes. Personally I'm leaning towards something about reinvention, renewal, and rebirth, with a focus on recycled art. However, I'm sure there are lots of great ideas out there.

Sun, January 11, 2009 - 5:38 PMAs usual, I'm ~320 miles from any advance meetup, but will volunteer for any Earth Guardian, Parking Wrangler, Ranger, Greeter, Lamplighter, Spotter stuff. Prior field exp. in at least that much from InterFuse, Gateway, "Nuts", etc.
"6/18-6/21/09: SCORCHED NUTS 2009!" ~we're pretty much on agreement for this date? Seemed mostly to work last year. Best of results wished for the location search; Hannon's would make at least a fine, familiar spot to fall back on.

I will be very disappointed if it comes to pass. -

Tue, January 13, 2009 - 1:36 PMI know that Don and Carrie have their scooter ralley on those dates. I also must be in North Carolina for HP Retreat, which has been paid for and reserved for a year.
This may cause many people to be upset, but this is just my opinion. Scorched Nuts is not a religious event, and while it would be great to that it lined up with the Solstice, I dont see that as a requirement. Wasn't it always a week earlier before last year?
Sorry if this causes some people to get mad at me (again it's just my opinion), I love the solstice, however the burn is not an exclusive pagan event. -

I have wanted to go to a different campout (Gaian mind) for the last two years that occurs the same weekend and have chosen to go to scorched nuts both years instead. It is a busy weekend for many and as I recall the date was set for the 3rd weekend as to not interfere with Bonneroo last year.... -

Tue, January 13, 2009 - 2:34 PMYes, that is the case. It was moved to the 3rd weekend not to interfere with Bonneroo, and as I remember everybody was complaining because it was move to this weekend.
Im just expressing my opinions here, so dont get me wrong if you all choose to have it this weekend, I will be really sad, however it is the only time of year, that I have people coming in from coast to coast and a few internationally. I will be going to North Carolina as I have had planned and paid for a year. I can't speak for others I know in the same boat and have expressed their concerns in private. Im just throwing it out there...

Tue, January 13, 2009 - 4:57 PMi didnt know about the scooter rally, or the other conflicts that same weekend. i am open for changing the dates to the previous weekend if it would make it able for more people to attend. it would also give another week between us and lakes of fire which may help others from nearby regions make it out. so those dates would be . . . 6/11-6/14. would that help out in attendance? please ask around and let me know asap so we can get these dates locked and sent out. -

Tue, January 13, 2009 - 5:25 PMIt looks like in SN 2007 was the weekend before Gian Mind, which historically seems to be held on or near the solstice. Just taking a guess, but I'm thinking we'd have less overlap between the going to Bonaroo crowd than the wanting to go to Gian Mind crowd (since GM is closer and cheaper and seems more culturally aligned with our group).
It would also be nice to not be back to back with Lakes of Fire. But, I'm biased because I want to come and want I Rebecca and other hoopers to be able to come. :) -

How much space are you looking for? I'd be interested in helping set this up in the Dayton area, as it's central to Cinci, Columbus, Indy, Cleveland, Toledo, Akron and Lexington. And of course, I live there :)
