This was asked on a Renaissance Faire tribe but no one answered. Thus I was pointed by the "Silver Unicorn" to this tribe figuring you might be able to help me.

Back in 2001, I spent a good deal of time living and working in London. During that time I was told that the story of Braveheart wasn't true and that it was at least partially fabricated but no one ever bothered to explain the details of what was true and what wasn't. The question has been bugging me in the back of my head since then. Thus I always meant to ask what the deal was with the whole William Wallace story. Was it even remotely true that the Scots won thier freedom then and the English are just saying otherwise much like they supposedly choose to leave the US after the Revolutionary War.

So if any one of you could answer the question I would be most appreciative.

BTW, back on my Dad's side I am a Robertson so also a Scot if only by blood.

Can anyone clue me in a bit about the art vibe in Scotland? where are the good schools? what is it like to live in Edinburgh? What do you know about Edinburgh College of Art?

Does anyone have any links or information about public transportation that comes and goes from the airport into town or for gettting around town? Also what are some of the more off the wall places to visit while in Edinburgh besides the castle? Any recommendation on Bed and Breakfasts or places to eat that are not expensive are greatly appreciated.

We so far are planning to go to the Orkney Islands and the highlands. We are wanting to stay out of the large towns for the most part. What is a good way to handle the money while there. We plan to use prepaid visa cards instead of carrying lots of cash. I know that most of the B&B's we want to stay at want cash instead of plastic. How do the ATMs work there? If we have debit type cards with american dollar amounts on them will the ATMs convert that into Pounds? Is it better to go through a local car rental instead of a major car rental company like Hertz? Do most places take visa cards and are there problems with using them there? Are there any cultural differences that I should be aware of? I have heard that eating with a fork the tines have to be turned downward instead of upward because if you have them upward it is like shoveling your food into your mouth. Are there areas that as being a foriegner should avoid?

Any and all suggestion are welcome. I will probably expand on this as comments are given.

Thanks
I'm having trouble with the French part though as it just wants to drink wine, have gourmet meals and fun (we call it joie de vivre) but I'm stubborn as hell, never ever give up especially in a fight (I've beaten up French men). I also have a practical turn of mind and am inventive on top of everything else and sometimes underneath everything else.
<< ....and speaking of.....I was astonished to learn recently that 100% of my American friends had never heard of Robert Burns. Here was I, sitting in my wee Glasgow school, being educated on everything Colonial from Washinton to Warhol while they sang "Auld Lang Syne" every year but presumably thought it was written by Shakespeare or the Bee Gees. As one of them told me, if it doesn't happen in America, or more specifically our own State, then it's a case of "Here lies Dragons (or Commies)"

In that case, kiss goodbye to electricity, penicillin, antiseptic, anesthesia, telephone, television and genetic engineering... to name but a few. All pioneered by wee haggis eaters who liked to while away their time when not reciting Burns or Marx. >>
I play the Scottish team sport of Shinty aka Camanachd with a group in Northern California, we play by the modern Camanachd Association rules and use modern equipment etc. For those who do not know Shinty is an ancient sport (2000 plus years old), but has evolved over the years into a modern sport, with a governing body etc. It is a cousin to the Irish Sport of Hurling; in fact there are international Shinty/Hurling matches. The official Scottish site is www.shinty.com. For me it all started as a Living History thing and has evolved to playing the first US Shinty team against a Scottish team on Scottish soil last Sept (2005), we plan to go back again this year. Our web site is www.norcalshinty.com. The club has coed teams and is open to anyone interested in playing or supporting this sport.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF IDAHO
Fifty-eighth Legislature Second Regular Session - 2006

A SENATE RESOLUTION DESIGNATING APRIL 6 OF EACH YEAR AS "IDAHO TARTAN DAY" IN RECOGNITION OF THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF THOSE CITIZENS OF SCOTTISH DESCENT.

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Idaho:

WHEREAS, April 6 has a special significance for all Americans, and especially those Americans of Scottish descent, because the Declaration of Arbroath, the Scottish Declaration of Independence, was signed on April 6, 1320, and the American Declaration of Independence was modeled after that inspirational document; and

WHEREAS, we honor the major role that Scottish Americans played in the founding of this nation, such as the fact that many of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were of Scottish descent, the governors in nine of the original thirteen states were of Scottish ancestry, and Scottish Americans successfully helped shape this country in its formative years and guide this nation through its most troubled times; and

WHEREAS, we recognize the monumental achievements and invaluable contributions made by Scottish Americans such as Neil Armstrong, Alexander Graham Bell, Andrew Carnegie, Thomas Alva Edison, William Faulkner, Malcolm Forbes, Billy Graham, Alexander Hamilton, Washington Irving, John Paul Jones, John Marshall, Andrew Mellon, Samuel F.B. Morse, James Naismith, Edgar Allen Poe, Gilbert Stuart, Elizabeth Taylor, General Douglas MacArthur, and Arnold Palmer, to name but a few; and

WHEREAS, we recognize the many great Idahoans of Scottish-American descent, including, but certainly not limited to, Senator John McMillan, Colin McLeod, Thomas McMillan and Andy Little; and

WHEREAS, we commend the more than two hundred thousand organizations throughout the United States that honor Scottish heritage, tradition, and culture and that represent the hundreds of thousands of Americans of Scottish descent, residing in every state, including Idaho; and

WHEREAS, these numerous individuals, clans, societies, clubs, and fraternal organizations do not let the great contributions of the Scottish people go unnoticed.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the members of the Senate, assembled in the Second Regular Session of the Fifty-eighth Idaho Legislature, that the Idaho Senate recognizes April 6 of each year as "Idaho Tartan Day."

I have done some genealogy, and wanted to share something which may be of interest to all who have Scottish/Irish heritage.
There have been many Scottish Sept's which have had families immigrate to Northern Ireland, back in the 15th through 17th centuries(where I found mine)I am bringing this up for those interested in retracing their family lines.

Some confusion was there for me, in where to find some family Atkinson's,Patterson's .I am still researching ,but was told that many Northern Ireland families had immigrated from Scotland.I am still researching these families, but I know my Cooper family, were Scottish.

There were also many names that were under certain Clan names.Going way back when the people that worked for a Clan were given the protection of the Clan. The next step is to find which families were under what Clans, and where.I hope to discover more soon and will share anything I find out with anyone who will write me a note and ask.

If there is anyone who knows about Sept's and Clans Please give me any advise,as I would appreciate it.

Loosely "Skids" releated. This article is from The Irish Post newspaper.
---------------------

Into the valley once more!
By RICHARD PURDEN

In previous lives Richard Jobson has been a punk icon, a top French model, a poet and a film critic. Now at 43 the second-generation Irishman has found his feet as one of Britain’s brightest new film directors following the success of his debut feature 16 Years of Alcohol. RICHARD PURDEN met up with the multi-talented former punk rocker in his hometown of Edinburgh.

THE opening sequence of Richard Jobson’s 16 years of Alcohol will have the hairs of Hoops fans standing on end. Paddy Reilly’s version of Fields Of Athenry which booms out at the start of the film is the perfect soundtrack throughout.

Jobson was keen to use the song for a number of reasons.

“It was always part of the fabric of family culture,” he says. “Coming from a working-class, second-generation Irish background we weren’t particularly wealthy — my mum worked in the docks and my dad was a coal miner so it was the old cliché of making your own entertainment.

“I was really immersed in Irish folklore because of the flavour and romance of the songs — which I loved. There was almost a fantasy quality about them, that somewhere there is a better life and that’s why I used Fields Of Athenry at the beginning of the film because it sets the cultural tone of the family.”

At a time when British and Irish cinema often has a rather bleak portrayal of Catholic existence, Jobson’s film delivers a positive portrayal of Scottish-Catholic working-class life that many Celtic fans will relate to.

“I’ve used a lot of Catholic iconography in my film,” he says. “I was a pretty rigorous young churchgoing guy in my youth and the Catholic church was the proper family network for me that I didn’t really have.

“Some great things came out of that. Nowadays we hear about the gruesome things that priests did to young kids but we never saw anything like that.

“The priests made us feel like we were part of something and that we maybe had a chance in life because these were very poor and humble communities.

“A lot of that stuff stayed with me because it seemed to me like a form of socialism. These guys were out there in the community trying their best to deliver some kind of social infrastructure — so it was really about us having an identity and having some hope.

“Having an identity is not a bad thing. I don’t mean through religion because in Scotland and certainly Northern Ireland that has been a social disaster but as a cohesive force to help you search for your own personal identity it was very important.”

Following Celtic religiously from an early age was not only a very joyous experience for Jobson but also very empowering.

He reflects on his youth as a hoops fanatic in the early 1970s: “There are so many wonderful memories but going on the bus every Saturday with a guy called Arthur McKenna was a spectacularly brilliant experience.

“I so looked forward to it.

“From the moment the bus dropped me off on a Saturday night I was depressed because I wanted to be back there again.

“I was with older people who were discussing things in an intelligent way — not just about football but about society.

“These were people who were not wealthy but they had a gravitas and a dignity. It was great to be part of it. Week after week you’d became more and more indoctrinated and embroiled into the mystery of Celtic and you’d claim your identity through that.

“I remember my first Rangers game because I was terrified. I’m not sure I enjoyed the experience but it was exhilarating and it was a life-changing moment because you were being introduced to such a stark sense of black and white. There was no middle ground.

“Jimmy Johnston scored and Celtic won 1-0.

“For other games against Motherwell, Partick Thistle, Ayr United or Alloa you were more interested in the formation of the team or who wasn’t playing well and seeing players such as George Connolly or Paul Wilson — who was the great winger we had in those days.”

The principles Jobson learned as a Celtic fan stayed with him throughout his life. He first found his own voice with seminal punk band The Skids.

“I’ve never had prejudice,” he says. “I’ve got a lot of pals who are Rangers fans.

“Growing up in a Catholic ghetto within an enormous Protestant community, I know what prejudice is.

“I loathe bigotry of any kind. The Skids once played some Anti-Nazi League gigs and there were guys at these shows who had appropriated the whole skinhead identity and made it into this National Front thing — with a strong sectarian aspect to what they were doing.

“We’d see them hassle a young kid because he was Irish, black, Asian or whatever and I’d say” ‘Let’s go and do it to them’.

“It was part of my culture and I could fight, I’d have no fear. These guys were quintessential bullies anyway and they would just run.”

When Jobson was 16 he put together The Skids with the now late Stuart Adamson of Big Country.

The group toured with the likes of The Clash in the late 70s and were famous for anthems such as Into The Valley.

After Adamson’s death Jobson rejoined the band for a storming tribute show at the famous Barrowlands in Glasgow.

“It was a really special event,” he remembers. “Everyone was there for exactly the right reason.

“The Skids was a great time for a lot of people. I dismissed it for a while, which was very arrogant of me.

“I’ve reassessed it now and I’m happy to talk about it.

“Stuart was a fanatical Dunfermline fan and he was always annoyed with me that I wasn’t.

“It was so romantic in a way — his love of Dunfermline was quite wonderful.”

Since his punk days Jobson has run through a number of career changes. He is probably best know in recent years for his work as a film critic on Sky television. And he reveals that the canteen at Sky was a hotbed of Celtic gossip.

“Charlie Nicholas has become a bit of a pal,” he reveals. “I loved sitting chatting to him.

“He’s very good at sitting on the fence but he’s Celtic through-and-through — a working-class guy like the rest of us. I used to follow Arsenal just to watch him play down there.”

Jobson’s debut film 16 Years of Alcohol opened across Britain recently while his second movie The Purifiers, premiered at this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival.

He is now filming his third feature A Woman In Winter.

But his love of football remains.

Two years ago his production team were surprised to be given a night off as their boss made his way to the centre of Glasgow for Celtic’s first European final since 1970.

“Rangers will never win the Champions League,” he says. “It’s never going to happen but Celtic have brought things bang up to date by getting to the UEFA Cup final.

“It was amazing being in Glasgow then. I was in a bit of trouble with the film — we were booked to finish at 9pm that night. At 6pm I told them they had earned a night off. Unawares to them it was so I could see the game.”

And despite Celtic losing he still rates the game as a triumph for the club and its fans.

“It was just an amazing evening, a magical night,” he says. “For Celtic the whole thing was a celebration.

Scottish Eggs

Yield: 6 servings
Ingredients
1 lb Sausage meat
7 Eggs
2 tb Finely chopped or grated
-onion
1 ts Poultry seasoning or sage
1 ts Cumin
1 ts Water
Flour for coating purposes
Fine, dry breadcrumbs
1 pt of ale

Instructions
1. Steal or pay for some pork sausage. (I like a spicy version)

2. Crack open the ale, pour it into a frosted mug and quaff it while six of the eggs are hard boiling. When they're done, put them to one side and mix the meat, onion, and spice mixture together. Take the resulting mixture and coat the eggs with it carefully and evenly. You might even want to peel the shells off first - although they do add an interesting texture.

3. When the eggs are done, roll them in the flour, shake off the excess, and put the eggs in the fridge for about an hour so the meat sets up. While you're waiting, you might as well crack another ale and put your feet up; no sense straining yourself.

4. A couple of minutes before the hours up, lightly beat the remaining egg with the tsp. of water. Again, you might want to remove the shell... Take the eggs, dip them in the egg mixture, and roll them in the breadcrumbs; they are now ready for cooking.

5. Traditionally, Scotch Eggs are deep fried. You can do that if you wish, but who needs all the extra grease in their diet and the mess and smell? I suggest you bake them in the oven at 375 F. for about 20 minutes or until the sausage covering is firm when picked at with a knife or fork. I usually stick them on a wire rack with a pan underneath so that they don't sit and cook in any grease that renders out of the sausage.

6. These go well with Lowenserf Hot German mustard or Louisiana Hot Sauce. Best way to serve them is with a chilled Spinach and Bacon salad and fresh tomatoes.

7. Oh and by this time you'll need more Ale. Enjoy!

Always on the lookout for cheap registered/nonregistered tartan wool fabric for my sewing projects and garb. Just wanted to ask if anyone had any good resources they would like to share. I have lucked out at the local fabric store a time or two, but it would be nice to find a reliable source of wool, both plain colors and plaids yearround.

www.trimfabric.com is a site I have used in the past. They used to sell on ebay in 10 yd incriments, but no longer. And they don't have a lot of the heavier, furry wool fabric that is more 'period', it's mostly just suiting fabrics. But the suiting fabrics make *nice* pleats, especially if you iron them (yes, I love my boyfriend, I ironed in pleats for his 9 yd great kilt, it pleats *GREAT* now).
