Greetings San Diego and the extended Southern California San Diego Area! For those of you who don't know me, my name is Scott. As of this week, I am seriously devoted to revitalizing the San Diego Fire Conclave for the 2008-2009 Burn year! I plan to schedule a meeting of interested minds in about two weeks to discuss the Conclave for the year.

First order of business at this meeting will be three-fold

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Designate a Lead (If no lead, then designate a co-operative or rotating leadership structure)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On the subject of Lead, well I am more than willing to take that responsibility, but will be talking to Sizzle and others in public at the meeting before that decision is made with some form of community consensus. I have experience leading a troupe of 15 for 1.5 years, being a part of the San Francisco Conclave for 2+ years, and being an integral part of Co-operatively structured organizations like student housing co-ops and even a collectively owned and operated worm composting company in Berkeley.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Decide on lit Practice Locations and Times.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Due to the nature of San Diego's suburban sprawl, I forsee lit Conclave practices being limited to twice a month. We can organize additional and smaller groups that spin together locally for people that need more practice time closer to home. (there's already several!) I'd personally like to have electronic music ( with local guest burner Dj's of course!) at one practice a month, and Drums and Acoustic/Percussion instruments at the next and alternate. I have the equipment to setup electronic music myself, but will need help with the drumming nights.

As for actual burn locations I have three goals.

A. Locate a location for practices to start short - term. I am currently in contact with a few SD park services to try to find a public park location that could be permitted. Private land would also be very doable, I would even organize the signing of liability releases and host a donation box at each practice if a member of the community stepped up and opened their property to the conclave until we find a long term location. We'll even purchase a liability insurance policy if needed to make this happen.

B. Decide on a few beach spots that can be used as backup locations to burn together when other spots do not work as a backup plan for burning.

C. Locate a long term location for twice a month burn practices.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Write a mission statement for the 2008-2009 San Diego Fire Conclave.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just to get the ball rolling, if you are reading this and interested in being a part of the Conclave please post your interest and ideas and concerns.

I look forward to seeing you all in the light of the flame sometime soon.

Hi San Diego burners... Many of you know that there was no fire conclave around the man before the burn this year. All day Saturday was a pretty fierce wind/dust storm and there was even some talk that the man might not be burned at all. As it was, he went up during a window of stillness a little prior to midnight that night, but the fire conclave did not perform. Many fire conclave performers have been asking what happened, and here is a first pass answer from Crimson Rose, who heads up the fire conclave, passed on verbally to $teven Ra$pa, who manages the regional program. We will probably hear directly from Crimson via the conclave lists when she has had some time to recuperate, as she just got back from the playa.

from $teven:

I spoke with Crimson about this yesterday. Short answer:

The Man was packed with pyro and had to be lit that night for safety
reasons. Fuel added to the man created a larger safety concern than usual.
When the weather cleared it was uncertain how long the conditions would hold
and a decision was made--which also considered the safety of everyone inside
the Circle--to burn the man while the conditions were holding. I assume
there were even more complicating circumstances associated with rushing to
prepare the Man while the weather held.

Crimson looks forward to the fire dancers all year and it was a devastating
disappointment for it not to happen. Devastating! She sent a firm
communication to the fire dancers not to light up, but--knowing her--I tell
you that she did not like making that call and it goes against her own
efforts, desires and intentions all year long. She and I were just
discussing how we wanted to make it a priority to get on fire groups at the
SF Decom that didn't get a chance to do their routines.

Request: All of us doing Decoms that can have fire, please let's go out of
our way to celebrate and accommodate these fire troupes this year. Let's
give priority to the groups that practiced routines vs. individuals or
people spinning freestyle. I hope you will join me in supporting members of
the Fire Conclave and making that a priority. Groups do work all year on
their routines and it was a great blow to them and to Crimson not to get to
do their performances.

I haven't heard of any groups getting banned. If that is the case I will be
arguing against it, but I think she would have mentioned that to me.

This is not the whole story, but I tell you it's close enough. Crimson could
not have possibly intended malice of any kind against members of the Fire
Conclave. She loves the Conclave and it is a huge part of her identity and
reason she is involved with Burning Man.

So what do people think about big lit fire practice locations? I think the beaches are the easiest place, but not necessarily the best.

Some positives to the beach (any beach) are

1. Public Land
2. All sand, no flammables
3. Wide open spaces

Some negatives to the beach are

1. Windy / Cold
2. Public space can easily create a spectator environment, as opposed to a participatory one.
3. Large crowd on the beach will have some issues with rangers/police

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Private Land Benefits

1. Shelter, or at least a lack of coastal wind
2. No strangers walking by or stopping just to watch
3. No need for interaction with public park rangers
4. Can use Amplified music, guest dj's or drummers/percussionists
5. Creates a more focused practice environment, everyone is there because they are participating, whether they participate with fire or safety or choreography or something else, they aren't just watching.

Private Land Negatives

1. Liability (Can Sign waivers, consider liability policy purchase)
2. Land Impact/Use dictates possible need for a donation box (not a big deal)
3. Not Public Land

Hello all!

First of all, thanks again to everyone for your support last year. It was an amazing experience and truly a dream come true for me. Looking back on it all... I find it CRAZY that it came off. But it DID! And it was wonderful!!

On to 2008:

While I did submit our intention for the BM fire conclave this year... there have been a number of developments since Burningman that have given me reason to believe that SDFC will not happen at BM this year. And in fact, in the last couple weeks, I have come to the decision that I will not be going to BM this year.

Once I decided that, I inquired of those that took on a leadership role in the conclave last year. It would seem that most of them are also not going to BM this year. That said, I will be contacting Crimson Rose in the near future to withdraw our intention.

I am planning to go to BM next year and I have every intention of organizing the group then if there is enough interest. I would encourage those of you who are committed to performing in the Great Circle this year to contact some of the performance groups in the area and offer your talents.

I love you all! Thanks again for a great experience last year!

S~

Hello All!

First of all, let me apologize for being virtually non-existent on this tribe since we returned from Burningman. My experience with the SDFC at Burningman last year was one of extremes. Every facet of the experience encompassed simultaneous highs and lows to such a degree that it took me a really long time to assimilate what it all meant. I liken it to being on a roller coaster... except all of the highs and all of the lows were experienced at the same time and to extreme degrees.

Since I have been off list for so long, I never even so much as thanked everyone... please know that I have the utmost gratitude for each and every one of you that participated at BM last year and worked so hard to make the show great and the experience memorable.

With all that said, the question looms...

"What about Burningman 2008?"

The first step is to get an idea of the amount of interest.

Logistically, if we are going to do this, we need to declare our intention to Crimson Rose by the MARCH 1 deadline.

So let me hear from you if you are planning to go to BM this year AND would like to participate in the Conclave.

S~~

ps. Thank you, Foxy, for getting the ball rolling. I'm officially kicking it down the hill...
Hey there fellow spinners,

Here is the deal: I lost my fire poi some years ago and have not bother to purchased a new one since I have been busy with my studies. So I am a student at the Body Mind College and my friend and I are going to perform for the last day of one of our classes. I am strapped for money (like a lot of students) and would offer to bring my massage table to your house and give you a Swedish/deep tissue massage that integrates cranial sacral, reflexology and reiki.

All that I'm asking is that I can use your poi for Sunday (to practice) through Tuesday (the night of the performance).

I am experienced with spinning fire(although, I'm no professional).

For the record, I have been doing massage for six years and I am in the Holistic Health Practitioners Program at the Body Mind College. So I can guarantee that this will be worth you time. Give me a call if interested. Thank You!!!

So it would be great to hear everyone's pro's and con's. Let's not turn this into a bitch session and/or a god I love us section. What would be most helpful is everyone's honest feedback in short bullets (if possible) so that we can take these shared experiences/lessons and build upon them for next year. So I'll go first.

Con: the chaos competing with the order
PRO: Complete confidence in the team we assembled

Con: the performance area seemed to move us back instead of forward to the audience
PRO: being @ 5:00 and being on TV

Con: the lamp lighting ceremony made me yawn
PRO: Hearing so many people yell out all of our names during the performance

Con: waiting, waiting, waiting
PRO: suddenly "oh shit" we can start now ... very exciting.

Hello!, My name is scott.

I was a very active burner when i lived in san francisco during 2001-2003. I spun in the conclave circle as a renegade my first burn, (i got into fire dancing before i knew what burning man was), and returned the second year with my own 10 person fire troupe named Dealan-De. For a year or two it was pretty crazy, we got performances left and right through Crimson and the SF conclave connection. It was amazing to be given our own performance space at the burn that year, and that particular burn was a pivotal experience in my life. (our troupe dissolved shortly after that burn, though).

Anyway, ive been in san diego for 4 years now (born and raised in north county), and I hadn't been to burning man since 2002 until this 2007 burn, and now im antsy for some local fire action of course! Low and behold the local community seems to have really flourished since i checked it out in 2003.

So yeah long story short, yadda yadda yadda, I'd like to join a local troupe/SDFC group and get some spinning time in. My prop of choice is fire devil sticks, been spinning them for 8 years now, but i also do some single staff work with a 6', and some occasional fire contact sphere manipulation (which is very gimmicky and burns alot of hair, but people seem to like it). Back in San Francisco my Troupe had intentions to do shows and get paid gigs etc, and part of the reason the group dissolved was over those intentions and basic conflicts of interest. These days I'm just looking to be active again, and Spin for fun like i used to.

I live in north county, and work the normal m-f gig, any information on where/when the local chapters of SDFC burn or practice would be very appreciated, and i will be at the local decom, so if you see me light up (really doubt there's another fire devil sticker around ) please feel invited to come introduce yourself, as i realize most people will be relaxing and probably not practicing much until after Decompression.

Hey everybody,

Please work within your groups to determine how much fuel you need for burn night. Try not to bring too much. A little extra is okay... but remember, we are only spinning for roughly 25 minutes, so there is no need for everyone to bring a gallon.

Who is using what type of fuel? Are people mixing? If so, be sure to let the fuel depot attendant(s) know so that they can keep everything straight.

Fuel Dump "do's and don'ts":

~~ Do mark your fuel/container well and retrieve it after the burn.
~~ Do keep your tools all together
~~ Do mark your tools well so that they are easily identifiable as yours. (Colored tape works well... use more than one color if possible).
~~ Do bring a flashlight.

~~ Don't pour fuel into any container that doesn't belong to you.
~~ Don't dip your tools in any container unless you know what fuel is in it.
~~ Don't leave your tools soaking.. they may inadvertently walk away.
~~ Don't smoke near the fuel dump... DUH!

You may want to start thinking about how you are going to get all your gear out to the playa on burn night. We have a friend with an art car who has agreed to haul our stuff out there. Let them know you need to be to the Great Circle no later than 8pm. Remind them that by getting there early, they will have a choice spot for their art car.

Feel free to add any sage advice you find applicable (Tedward? I know you must have some words from the voice of experience.)
at friday's conclave rehearsal at the stormhold, i had parked my solid black, felt hat on the large "table" on the back patio. when we were ready to light up, i went back to retrieve it, and it was no longer there! :*(

it's pretty non-descript, so probably easily confused with your own, so understandable if taken by accident. it is pretty heavy, with some subtle ribbing, but looks more like felt than something knit. i wear it rolled over on itself to create a brim of sorts. it's taken me *ages* to finally locate something made of natural fibres that works for me. i'm really bummed i couldn't find it when i returned in the daylight the next day.

any leads? could you check your fire play stash just in case, please? thanks!
p.s. and on the offhand chance you might know, i'm missing since the sunday party at tony and lucy's the second poi head cover ('condom') made of a blue-black denim-like material with rainbow-shiny butterfly details. it has a draw-string and looks like a little pouch.

Hey Everybody!

This Friday we are going to gather an enormous amount of talent and creativity and converge at Stormhold to create a KICK ASS show for burn night! To make this night a success, please take careful note of the following:

*****************WHERE:

Stormhold in Escondido
928 Baron Pl. 92026

Thanks, Captain!!

******************TIME:

7:00pm is our start time goal for both performers AND safety. If you think you will be there much earlier, please check with Storm to be sure it's okay.

*** Safety - NO NEED TO ARRIVE EARLY as was suggested in previous posts. ***

Let's use as much daylight as we can for practice, focusing energy on transitions between squads.

At twilight, we will converge for a meeting to discuss details VITAL TO EVERYONE!

Following the meeting, we will run thru the entire show once UNLIT; after that, LIT for as many times as it takes for us to all feel good... I'm thinking at least 3-4.

*****************WHAT TO BRING:

~~ FUEL - Squads please work among yourselves to ensure that your squad brings enough fuel to complete your routine 4 times lit.

~~ Dip Cans - Bring EVERYTHING you plan to bring out onto the playa. We will be practicing setting up the fuel dump as if we were on the playa.. it will be good to know how much equipment we are dealing with so that we can plan accordingly... and condense where possible.

~~ Safety Equipment - No need to bring out your duvy's.. we have the 7 large SDFC ones. We are bringing fire extinguishers as well.

~~ Costumes - We will be filming for learning purposes. Wearing your costume is recommended as it will give you a chance to work out potential problems prior to burn night. If you have costume questions or concerns, bring them and ask. But let's not let costumes consume our time. We need to focus on the performance.

~~ Food/Water - We'll be there a long time and we'll be working hard. If you can... bring some healthy snacks to share. I'll be bringing a case of water, as well.

~~ Toys - duh!

~~ A clear head - I'd like to keep the intake/partake to a minimum. It's very important that we are all "present". So much needs to happen in a short period of time. This is the night where all of our hard work comes together. I don't want anyone to miss it!

~~ A positive attitude - We're all going to be amped. And it's only a fraction of what we will be feeling on burn night. I know it's a cliche' , but, let's all try to be patient and work together as best we can. Remember that we are all friends and we all have the same goal... to create an amazing show and enjoy the thrill of this incredible experience TOGETHER!

Feel free to add comments with pertinent info that I may have forgotten to include.

See you ALL Friday!!

S~~

For those that are new this year, an old tradition was brought back
to life last year. This tradition continues with the Helmsmen, who
are in the natural position, to make sure the One Flame is given to
their group.

FIRE POT DETAILS ~ Specially designed Fire Pots, 2-1/2’ - 3’ feet
tall, will burn liquid fuel and be secured into the ground (so they
won’t tip). Each group will have One fire pot to each side of their
space/ real estate (yes you should use this fire to light up your
dance). After the Man has fallen these Fire Pots must be removed by
each fire group.

LUMINFEROUS ~ PROCESSION TO THE MAN
http://www.irongypsy.com/blog/
See the link upon, from last years build.

Opening Fire Ceremony (Monday August 28, 6 PM), starts by utilizing
the sun and a spiral mirror where I extract a flame from the sun and
a fire springs forth in the Center Camp Cauldron (Created by
Tabasco). For the flame to continue it must be stoked, disturbed and
kept alive throughout our entire event. We encourage all those that
encounter this special Cauldron in Center Camp to help keep this
flame alive.
The fire we extract from the sun, light the cauldron with, drum and
dance around, will be brought to the Man in a ceremony that will
resurrect an old tradition making it new again.

THE PROCESSION OF THE ONE FLAME
Saturday, September 1st, 8 PM
The fire that has been burning all week long in the Center Camp
Cauldron will be transferred to the Luminferous, a special Lantern
built by Tabasco and his Seattle crew.

The Procession of the One Flame will start in center camp at the
Cauldron where the
Lamplighters will carry the Luminferous and along with Gamelon X,
Lloyd Family Players and the lantern will process from Center Camp to
the Great Circle that surrounds the Man.

Once arrived at the great Circle, the processional will wait until 9
PM, when I give the signal for the Mans arms to be raised and for the
Procession will start its traverse of the inner edge of L3K warming
up the crowd. Once the Luminferous and Procession has made a full
circle back to the original spot in the Great Circle, the fire will
be passed around the Great Circle starting at the 6 o'clock position,
going out clock wise and counter clock wise.

• This fire will be passed from Helmsmen to Helmsmen all around the
Great Circle each one holding the Fire high. Each standing at their
groups fire pot.
• The signal, from me to Helmsmen, will be given to light the fire pot.
• Once the Fire Pots are lit, fire performers utilize this fire,
which in turn will signal the start of Fire Conclave activities.

Spotter Training Notes:

Advance communication is very helpful. Communication in the moment is critical.
Your priorities for who/what to protect are, in order, Audience, Venue, Performer. This point is especially important to fire marshals.

Always take your lead from the performer and do what the performer asks—until the performer gets into a situation where you need to take charge. When that happens, you need to act swiftly and decisively.

Scenarios:
Spotters will typically operate in several different situations, each of which has a different mix of relevant factors:

The crowd: How dense? Will they interfere? Will they be mentally altered?
Advance communication with performer: Can you work out what you expect of each other in advance?
Acquaintance with performer: Do you know this person, his expectations, skill level, etc?
Skill of performer: Does this guy know what he's doing?

Other risk factors:
Take note of these factors before the performer lights up. Point out any concerns to the performer, and if possible, offer to help correct the problem.

Clothing: Anything with fur, feathers, or fringe (this includes cutoff jeans). Synthetic materials, including pleather and PVC. Anything gauzy.

Equipment: Heavily worn gear; poi wicks attached with key rings or trigger snaps; ball-chain made of aluminum (colored ball-chain is a dead giveaway) or plastic; any wick held together with baling wire; any other tools made of obviously flimsy materials.

Terrain & surroundings: broken ground that a performer might stumble on; smooth surfaces that might become slick from cast-off lamp oil; low-hanging tree limbs or other overhead obstructions; dry vegetation.

Performer: performer is mentally altered, distracted, inexperienced, suffering stage-fright, etc.

Hairy situations:
Poi gets tangled — on skin: Move in immediately. Order performer to "STOP." Cup wicks with towel, lift up and away from skin, attempt to place towel between skin and wick. Extinguish wicks. Untangle chain. Assess burn, treat as appropriate.

Poi gets tangled — near skin or behind back: Prepare to move in. Performer may be able to untangle, but may need help, and will be maneuvering to avoid contact with flame. Move in when performer calls for help, or when your judgment of the situation calls for it. If you can cup wicks with towel while performer is moving, do it. If not, order performer to "STOP." Cup wicks with towel and keep wicks above and away from the performer's skin as much as possible. If practical, untangle chains while lit; if not, extinguish first. You may need to tackle the performer if repeated "STOP" orders don't work.

Poi gets tangled — off skin: Prepare to move in. Performer can often untangle, but may need help. Performer is probably not in immediate danger of injury. Move in when performer calls for help. Cup wicks with towel. If practical, untangle chains while lit; if not, extinguish first.

Hair on fire: Move in immediately. Order performer to "STOP." Performer should stop and assume arms-out posture. Pat down with towel to extinguish flame.

Clothing on fire: With small fires, do not move in immediately: many clothing fires die out quickly. If fire persists more than 2-3 seconds, alert performer by shouting "SLEEVE" or equivalent and prepare to move in—the alert ideally should be a single word indicating what is on fire. If performer does not extinguish fire and fire persists 3 more seconds, or if fire spreads quickly, order performer to "STOP." Performer should stop and assume arms-out posture. Pat down with towel to extinguish flame.

Poi goes flying: Performance should stop. If performer continues, order performer to "STOP" as you hunt down the wayward wick and extinguish it.

Audience member enters fire circle: Move in immediately. Tell audience member to step outside fire circle. If this is not instantly effective, physically remove him from fire circle. Call for help if needed.

Fuel container fire: If fuel container has close-fitting lid, place lid on to smother. If not, lay sturdy towel on top to smother. If towel is not effective, use fire extinguisher.Do not douse with water. Take care not to tip container.

Ground fire: Grass, wood chips, etc, can occasionally catch fire. These fires generally die out quickly, but cannot be ignored. Performers should be aware of them and stamp them out quickly. If the performer does not stamp it out, and the fire persists more than a few seconds, wait until the performer has moved away and stamp it out. Keep an eye on that spot in case embers flare back up. In the unlikely event that the fire spreads, order performer to "STOP." Clear the circle, smother the fire if possible, extinguish with extinguisher if not, and take whatever other actions the situation demands.

Normal situations:

Extinguish wicks: Lay towel on ground for performer to lay wicks on. Completely cover wicks, wrap towel tightly around wicks, and smother thoroughly. Take care to avoid hot metal hardware, which may be dangerously hot even through one layer of towel. Large or complex tools may require multiple towels and/or each wick smothered separately.

Light wicks: Light from underneath, with lighter. Some fuels do not ignite readily. Back off once lit and take towel.

Monitor fuel depot: Busy fuel depots should be inspected as often as circumstances permit. Top off empty soaking tanks. Remove empty fuel canisters and set them aside uncapped. Take note of equipment that seems to have been left behind, and set aside.

Equipment: Towel. Should be dense and fairly large. Do not use thin, threadbare, or small towels. Should be kept slightly damp, not dripping wet. Should be used folded over to protect your hands and maximize smothering effectiveness. Duvetyn blanket. Alternative to towel, useful when water is scarce.

Fire extinguisher. Should be "ABC" type. Always shoot low (at the base of the fire), avoid the face.

Water bucket. Actually not very useful in emergencies, but good for wetting towel, cooling minor burns, etc.

Fuels:
Fuels typically used by fire performers are White Gas (naphtha) and Lamp oil (paraffin).
White gas: Ignites readily and evaporates quickly. Burns hot and bright. Transfers easily, but transferred flames also burn out quickly.
Lamp oil: Ignites stubbornly and evaporates slowly. Burns slightly less brightly. Transfers will be sticky, burn longer, and will be more painful. Slung-off fuel will stick on hard surfaces, be slick, and can be a hazard to good footing.
===================================================
Suggested Spotter training:
1) Big ol'e wick, standing with towel - gets 'em used to dealing with big fire, extinguishing without setting the towel on the ground, and dealing with a little unpredictability (it's on a chain).
2) On body fire - get 'em used to spotter-performer communication and have them extinguish wicks on special arm and leg assemblies
3) Chasing a body - the person in the rig runs away from the spotter - pretty much handles all the likely scenarios.

-----------
I run newbie spotters through a few things .. 1st is how to use an Extinguisher (basic) 2nd is the ole fuel dump fire. 3rd is chasing the flying wick..
-----------

demonstrating what a fuel dump fire looks like is also probably a good idea. I've seen people run from paint cans as though they expected them to explode. I also have seen someone turn over a (not empty) fuel can to try to put it out. Showing people how to smother fires by letting them do it in a controlled circumstance is a good idea.

Thanks for a great meeting last night everyone!

Over 30 people showed up to mix energy and continue our momentum. Here are some highlights for discussion:

~~ DISCOUNT TICKETS: Everyone should have received a notification that their ticket is approved and ready for purchase. You may purchase your ticket online or at the gate. Either way, your ticket will be waiting for you. There are a few people (Connie, Spike and Amaya that I know of) who have issues with their tickets. I will wait another day or two and address these with Crimson. I'm trying to consolidate my correspondence with Crimson out of respect for her time. But she has communicated that she will work to resolve all issues prior to BM. So, if you have an issue, let me know and then try not to stress about it.

~~COSTUMES: Let's do our best to project the appearance of performers. Talk among yourselves as to whether you want to coordinate within your sub-groups. If you are in need of assistance with costumes, ask for help. If you have already decided what you will be wearing on burn night, feel free to wear it on 8/10 for our final practice. We will be filming, so it might be nice for you to be able to see how it looks on film. If you want an opinion on possible costumes, or if you have costumage that you may want to share with others... bring them to the 8/10 meeting.

~~ TIMING: I would like each squad to try to get their performance down to roughly 5 minutes. N. County may take a little less. S. County and Unifier may end up taking slightly more. Remember, we only have 25 minutes from beginning to end... including free spin. Everyone has been working really hard to create a choreographed presentation that will wow the audience. That said, I know that we all want a chance to throw down in a solo and really show our stuff. The more efficient we can be with the timing of the choreographed routines, the more time we will have for free spin. Once you have had a chance to free spin once, let some other people get out there and do their thing.

~~ TRANSITIONS: We will need to solidify the transitions from squad to squad. I'd like to get these in writing and then write out a master set list with all the subgroups and performers. I will have this on butcher block paper for everyone to see at the final practice on 8/10. Then we will run thru it several times that night.

~~ SAFETY TRAINING: Mandatory -- Everyone (performers, too) needs to be checked off for safety training. Toymaker (Erik) posted a really good safety synopsis. Please take time to read it.

~~ Next (and final) practice is Friday, August 10th. We will be meeting at Storm's. Start time - 7:00pm. Safeties be there 45 minutes early. Storm, what is the earliest people can arrive if they are super eager to practice or just want to beat the traffic?

REMINDER: Please check the SDFC tribe DAILY for updates and info. Squad leaders, please be sure that all of your peeps are on tribe and dialed in.

If I missed something that was covered last night, feel free to add info or ask questions.

Thanks again for the great energy last night!! See you all on the 10th.

Some of you may have already gotten an email with this in the subject line:

"Welcome to the "fire-conclave-announce" mailing list"

If not, you likely will soon. This is a pre-cursor to the email you will receive with instructions about purchasing and picking up your ticket.
Be sure to check your spam-filtered messages.

Everyone who participates in the fire conclave will remain on the FC announce list and you will get info from Crimson throughout the year about fire events and other things as well as info about the conclave.

Ruben, Katya, please check and be sure that ALL members of your squads are on the SDFC tribe. We really need everyone to be plugged in. If someone is not on tribe, please be sure to forward them the pertinent info as it's really important in the next few weeks that everyone gets all the info they need.

Thank you to everyone who made our session last night such a success. It was great to work with all of you and to get everyone fire trained who was present. I could tell that many of us left that night more comfortable with fire.

We'll do a second briefing and fire safety session for performers the night of the 10th. Fire safety training (sign-off) is mandatory. If you did not get signed off last night; then get signed off the night of August 10th. Make this a priority. Thanks so much to The Alchemist, ToyMaker, and Sparkle for their assistance. Also, we will be filming the night of the rehearsal so you can get onto you tube late that night and see how we/you are doing from the camera's eye.

The rest of this is for ALL safeties (non-performers):

While August 10th is an 'all hands on deck' final dress rehearsal there will also be a training for fire safety's (Mandatory). So all safeties (non-performers) please arrive 45 minutes prior to the rehearsal. Put this in your calendar.

Please come to the dress rehearsal on August 10th. dressed in the gear you will be wearing on burn night. It is our dress rehearsal also. my clothing preference is comfortable shoes (boots, or sneakers). A comfortable pair of non-holed blue jeans (black or dark blue preferably) and a dark black shirt/jacket with no designs or colors. The idea here is for us to be ever present but not 'seen'. We are the eyes in the dark.

We'll start off with a 15 minute briefing, and then move on to a 30 minute run through of some 'what if' scenarios. These will be 'live' fire sessions, safely coordinated, but intense scenarios. We will be working on real what if scenarios ... since now is the time to practice them. Items will include the what to do of: Fans dripping, poi tangling, whips wraping on body parts, breather splashing, staffs dropping/thrown, stilt walker emergencies, and last but not least, commuincation with performers and from performers (what to watch for if the performer thinks the fire is managle). Shouldn't be more than a 20 minutes. I also want to run through a brief 10 minute walk-through on fuel depot, spin off area, burn kits / first aid / and our video / camera two crew.

These two are nightly opportunities for open spin jams... not really a troupe performance thing. The last one mentions a 24' x 24' raised stage. Wow! What a gift to the fire spinning community!

It was suggested that we do it in OB. I'm fine with this if we all agree that this is a suitable location. Since OB is public domain, we can keep fire to a minimum this first night and focus on unlit run-thru's as well as safety check-offs for all performers and safeties. We will take what we learn from this one and practice accordingly for the 2+ weeks until the final practice on Aug. 10.

AUGUST 10TH: This will be the final Conclave-wide practice before we perform on Burn night! If you can only make one practice... make it this one. Clear your calendar and BE THERE! We will be doing a minimum of THREE FULL LIT RUN-THRU's. More if necessary. Anyone who did not get a safety check-off in July will need to be checked-off on this night.

I will be disseminating more info prior to these dates. For now... save the dates.

Carry on...
Business Buddha will be following up with safety training and guidelines and this can all be covered when we get together as a whole. In addition to safeties, all performers will also need to be checked off for safety protocol prior to hitting the dust.

There will be some on-playa requirements that each participant will need to fulfill in order to get your laminate which you MUST have to be inside the Great Circle. These are minimal and I will give you all the deets as soon as I get them.
Hello Fire Conclave,

I am the creator/producer of the 2007 Rock Opera on the playa at Burning Man this year.
The Rock Opera, a live, amplified, exotic, electronica performance, will take place on Friday Night August 31st from 9pm to 10pm at
2:30 & Esplanade. We encourage performers to use the Mayan Pyramid's many levels within their choreography. There are no rehearsals and no memorized lines. The finale will end in pyrotechnics and The Pyramid will BURN. If you are a Fire Performance group and interested in participating in this event, I would love to hear from you.
A link to the Rock Opera music follows:
www.bandbuzz.com/BBResultsSearch
The RO music is the first 8 songs on the BandBuzz list ending with "What Would You Say".
