Hey all! I've been hooping for almost 2 months, and I am ready to try some twins. The weaving patterns are just too awesome and hard-looking to pass up! I'm gonna make myself a pair, but I don't want to mess up. Does anyone have recommendations for diameter and material? I don't want to make them so big they hit each other or whatever, and not so small that, well, I don't know, not so small that it doesn't work well. Anyone have a range of diameters that works well?
Also, I have 3/4" 160psi tubing. Do I have to go buy either 1/2" tubing, or 100 psi tubing? Let me know what your opinions are. If there's anyway for me to not have to buy new tubing (or someone wanted to sell me some twins, if I do), that would be awesome. Thanks!

Re: Twins Recommendations
Fri, October 2, 2009 - 9:54 AMMy twin hoops are made out of the 3/4" tubing but I can't remember what psi I used. Ideally the 1/2" is better for twins because it's lighter and easier to maneuver with your fingers but the 3/4" will work. I would just go with what you've got. The plus side to using the bigger tubing is that it's easier to hoop with around your body so it enables you to do on and off body transitions while using twins. As for the diameter, I would make it about one arms length that way it's big enough to hoop with around your body but small enough to do all the different poi tricks. Either way I don't think it would be a bad investment to buy other diameters and weights so you can experiment. Heavy big hoops are good for certain styles and tricks while small light hoops are better for others. I know here in Bellingham where I'm at there is a plumbing store that will allow you to buy the tubing in whatever quantity you want so you don't have to get a whole roll. Hope this helps. Happy Hooping!!! -

Fri, October 2, 2009 - 2:07 PMThanks for your help.
Does anybody advise against absolutely not using 3/4"? I would hate to make these hoops and not be able to develop a high level of skill because it simply isn't the right kind of tubing.
I hope I can find a hardware store that sells tubing by the foot -- that would be so good! -

Re: Twins Recommendations
Tue, October 6, 2009 - 9:09 PMI don't want to absolutely advise against it, but 3/4" is going to be heavy. 1/2" tube is far lighter and easier to manipulate. It's going to give you that slick fast twins look that I'm sure you're aiming for. 1/2" tube is also the cheapest. It's under $12 a roll at Lowe's, last I checked. And then while you're at it, make some bigger hoops with the 1/2" tube for hooping on your core. Hooping is more difficult with the lighter, faster tube, but the challenge will make you a better hooper.

Re: Twins Recommendations
Thu, October 15, 2009 - 9:33 PMI have four sets of twins.
The largest set is about 38" in diameter, and uses 3/4" 160psi tubing. I intended these to be versatile - small enough to use as twins for extended hand-hooping, but large enough to use on-body as well. As with any hybrid, they aren't great for either, but they work out fine. They also make your arms strong.
I have another set that is about 32" in diameter, also using 3/4" 160psi tubing. I made these in a pinch one day during a hoop-making party. They are really heavy for their size, and I don't recommend them for anything but hooping on your feet.
My favorite set is about 35" in diameter, using 1/2" 100psi tubing. These are great for hand hooping, but pretty much useless for on-body hooping. Even so, they are spectacular, and I highly recommend this size and weight. Depending on how tall you are, you might even go for something closer to 30".
You can use your heavy tubing, and it will work, but your arms will get tired (and strong).
Cheers, and welcome to hooping! I hope to see you out at some of the weekly spin jams!
