I'm gonna make myself a pair, but I don't want to mess up. Does anyone have recommendations for diameter and material? I don't want to make them so big they hit each other or whatever, and not so small that, well, I don't know, not so small that it doesn't work well. Anyone have a range of diameters that works well?

Also, I have 3/4" 160psi tubing. Do I have to go buy either 1/2" tubing, or 100 psi tubing? Let me know what your opinions are. If there's anyway for me to not have to buy new tubing (or someone wanted to sell me some twins, if I do), that would be awesome. Thanks!

I'm in Tacoma for the Summer, but I travel up regularly to Seattle, and I'll be living there again come September. I'd really love to get started hooping soon, but the start-up costs are too much for me right now.

My question is: is anybody making hoops for sale? They don't have to be custom, they don't have to be extra-fancy: I ask that they are attractive, not too feminine, and under $30. I'd be happy to meet up with someone to talk about options, or just view photos and pick one up in person; whatever works best for you, Master Hoopsmith! I'm really attracted to metallic silver, as well as green, purple and blue, but it's not hugely important.

Please let me know if you make hoops and want to help me get started, or know anyone who would.
Saturday, July 11
5:00-8:00pm

Sunday July 12
1:00-4:00pm

Workshops both days are in the Birmingham studio at The Dance Centre, corner of Davie and Granville St. (visit http://thedancecentre.ca for location details)

Registration will be $120 USD for both days. First day only (for newcomers) and second day only (for those who have attended a Hoop Path workshop previously) pricing will only be announced close to the date if spaces remain available.

Registration will be done online, through the normal ticketing/registration service that they use for all of their workshops. That should be set up in the next week or so, one of us will post the link when it is ready.

Extra social opportunities: come downtown early and join in the Saturday Circus, the weekly public playdate of the Vancouver Hoopers and the local skill toy community. 2-4pm, we meet outside the Vancouver Art Gallery at the corner of Robson and Howe, and play at the base of the steps leading to the Gallery Cafe. Bax and Ann will be there (Ann's stoked about working on contact juggling and I'm going to see if Bax has mad unicycle skills), and we always have extra hoops, poi, and juggling gear to share!

We will also find a nearby restaurant for a post-class group dinner on Saturday night to recharge after our first hooping session. (meal cost is not included in the workshop registration fee)

If you are coming from out of town and are looking for lodging, there are a ton of options within a few blocks of the Dance Centre, from high-class hotels to low-cost hostels. HI-Downtown Vancouver (on Burnaby St, quieter) and SameSun (on Granville St, above the strip with all the bars and nightclubs) are both decent locations, with dorm beds starting at $32. If you'd prefer to be billeted or couch surt, let me know and I'll see if anyone local can play host for the night! (I can't guarantee this as I know that most of our regulars are short on house space) I'm also happy to provide transit instructions from the airport or bus depot to the Dance Centre, just toss me a line.

What to bring: a water bottle, layered clothing so you can stay comfortable as the studio heats up, your favourite hoops (a range of sizes will be nice, but it is fine to just bring one if that is all you've got, or contact me if you'd like a loaner for the weekend!), pen and paper, any medication or glucose you'll need to stay safe through extended activity, and extra cash for drinks, dinner and hot Hoop Path tshirts!

Still to come: a description of each day of the workshop, and the registration link.

Already here: mass excitement!!!!
*Single-color (GREEN)
*Grip Tape (Teal, Pink, and Blue)
*38 inch diameter

I've used it less than a dozen times. It still has battery life. I bought it for $118 (shipping&handling included). I'll sell it for $75 (s&h included).
Let me know if you're interested!
If you're wondering why I'm selling it; it's not the hoop-- it's me! I'm sure we've all heard this before ; p But, really, I'm a college student who spent her birthday money on a toy I never get to practice with. Therefore, when I do get the chance to play, I get frustrated trying to readjust to this hoop.

I thought I might put the word out there for anyone interested in teaching over here. The senior center has a great space for hooping and other floor work classes. There were about 8 or 9 ladies there and I'm sure more would come with an actual teacher.

Hello Seattle Hoopers,
Honk Fest West Needs YOU!
My name is Mike and I am in a marching band from Chicago,
EE Marching Band, or Environmental Encroachment.

We and many others will be in Seattle, March 21-23 for a very fun festival, HONK Fest, which will have fun marching bands taking to the streets for three days,
with a Sunday scheduled at the Ballard Skate Park with all the bands.
Perfect time to bring the hoops out to some funky raw music.

The line up includes Hungry March Band from New York CIty, EE and Black Bear Combo from Chicago, and Carnival Band from Vancouver, as well as some of Seattle's finest street brigades!~ and many other bands, burners and paraders. Please come out and have some fun with us. I can speak for Hungry, BBC, EE and some others in saying this will be our first trip to the Pacific Northwest. Its real soon!

Our band, EE uses hooping in our performances, and I am gonna put out the request to have anyone bring extra hoops for us to borrow. With our instruments and sleeping bags and flags, we will have little room for hoops, I know we need the collapsing or the twisting hoops to save space, they're on the band's wish list.
But we want to borrow some anyway to meet and hoop some with ya's.

These will be kind of pub crawls on Friday and Saturday night, in Georgetown and Ballard neighborhoods, then Sunday at the skate park.
TELL EVERYONE.
---From the website:
The streets, cafes, & pubs of of Ballard, & Georgetown will be overflowing with the lively sound of horn players and drummers from more than a dozen street bands. The bands are converging on Seattle from five states & Canada for the very first HONK! FEST WEST!

We are celebrating our music, our comraderie, and our determination to help bring joy, music & dancing to the streets of our cities.

Easter Sunday, we ask that you join us In recognition of the 5th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. Be part of HONK!Band Mass, at the Ballard Skate Park, Ballard Street Market, and points in between, from noon to 3pm. Several special bands will be joining us, along with members of the Backbone Campaign, a 15-foot dragon puppet, and hopefully, you & your friends on this special day.---

There is more information and schedules on the Honk Fest West website:

Hello Seattle Hoopers!

I'm in Seattle right now doing some circus training at SANCA and, with the fullness of that schedule, it's taken me a while to get a workshop together. I just reserved a spot in the movement studio at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center and hope you will join me for a hoopshop on Friday, Dec. 21 from 7-8:30 pm, cost is $18 (I can work with you some on price if you need it, but this session will be packed with info and well worth the price). Location information below.

I know there's a variety of skill levels in Seattle and am going to do my best to introduce the basics while also giving variations to challenge intermediate hoopers. If you hoop already, bring a newbie friend and hone your skills while they get started on their hoop journey. This will be a jam-packed session of hoop information for the novice and more experienced hooper. Prepare to learn and be inspired!

This hoopshop will cater to beginner hoopers while also giving variations and suggestions to challenge experienced hoopers. We'll be starting with the basics of hoopdance: core hooping, pacing, freeing the feet, stalling and moving up and down the core, moving through exercises to promote ease and grace. I'll introduce two types of lifts to take the hoop from the core off the body. A 'jam' portion at the end will allow me to circulate through and give individual attention according to skill level while also demo-ing more advanced moves.

Hoops will be provided for use and will also be available for sale. If you have a hoop, please do bring it, as my workshop stock is a bit low, being that I left my the bulk of my hoops back east.

Pre-registration is *highly* encouraged! If you plan on coming, please send me an email at: spiral@spiralhoopdance.com

Thanks everyone, and I hope to see you at Youngstown!

Hello Seattle Hoop Peeps,

I wanted to let you all know about a class that I am starting at the Seattle Circus Arts School, SANCA. I am a fire performer and bellydancer. I teach kids classes at the circus school. I just recently completed the Hoopgirl teacher training and I'm excited to share what I've learned.

Saturdays - Beginning - Sat Nov 3rd
2:30 – 3:30 pm
Ages 8 and up
Seattle's Circus Arts School: SANCA
$103 for 8 weeks + a $35 annual registration fee (good toward all classes offered at the school)
206.652.4433
Office@sancaseattle.org
www.sancaseattle.org
Contact the school to sign-up

This isn’t your Grandma’s Hula Hoop Class! Hoops are constructed of heavy weight durable plastic tube. They are larger in size than "traditional" toy hoops which makes them rotate slower so they are easier to keep spinning. This allows many people who could never hoop before to experience success! Come out and learn the basics of Hooping on your torso, arms, legs, and off body in elaborate arcs, spins and jumps. It’s fun, silly and a great workout. Anyone can hoop!

It doesn't have to be coordinated to music or even overly choreographed, just good moves and maybe purty clothes. Mostly I just want to have 3 lit hoops and fab hoopers on stage during the music for eye candy and to bring some variety to the fire performance routine.
So I'm hooked, and the short version of the saga is: I just bought a bunch of hoop making supplies. For now I'm assembling a collection of hoops to take to the park behind my apartments here in Renton, but I don't plan on stopping there.

Maybe someday I'll need to get a business license so I can sell hoops and do workshops and classes and generally go crazy. Until then, I'm just working on using up my first 100' spool of polypipe. (3/4 160 psi for the curious)

Hey, Seattle Hoopers!

I'm excited to be coming back up to your corner in two weeks. Since first coming to Seattle, I have taught the "First Steps" workshop many more times and the added flight time spent teaching has helped me to create a better and better workshop. I look forward to re-sharing "First Steps" and offering my latest workshop, "The Warrior Path." The process of teaching these workshops has taught me a lot about my own hooping and what things are important to me in my life away from the hoop as well as my life within it. I love the organic, almost socialist feel of the Community I met that night in Seattle. A community built around money NOT changing hands is a beautiful thing. Without weekly classes, the onus of creating hoop gatherings rests squarely on the shoulders of the Community who each organize and gather only for the love of the hoop. That love seems to be enough to grow and sustain the Community in Seattle. (If there are classes now organized, please know that I am unaware and do not mean any disrespect to whoever is teaching them.) Each of these Communities to which I have travelled has collectively a special and unique style and vibe. The core and flow exercises seem to resonate more with you guys than specific 'move' exercises. Hooping for you all seems to be a lot about just feeling it. That sentiment is kindred to my own. Hooping had already begun to change me before I ever learned my first lift. I teach these workshops for many reasons, but one big reason is share ways to keep the flow flowing.
The "Warrior (Maidan) Path" work shop is intended to offer other, alternative ways to hoop and flow. This workshop teaches off body techniques of hooping which I believe build the mind, body, and spirit. My belief is that in the process of finding the right rhythm to put on to the hoop you find the right rhythm to bring out of you. When I was there in Seattle last, I was reminded that it isn't what moves you can pull off that reveal who you are, but the connection you feel to those moves. I am grateful to have the opportunity to share with you some of the moves I have connected with over the years in my own practice and teaching.

I'll don't have anything to do in Seattle on Monday (day) or tuesday (all day/night) if there are any jams going on. I would love to hoop with whoever wants to.

I'm offering my Hoop Play workshops at the Dance Centre - downtown Vancouver, corner of Davie and Granville St, easy to find on your way in from the border!

These workshops are designed for hoopers with some previous experience. Tips and techniques for each specific area of hooping will take us through a challenging and fun afternoon! $30 with your own hoop, $35 if you need to rent a hoop, register with me at christahoops@gmail.com

Sunday July 8 3:30-5:00pm
Off-body – vertical and horizontal hand hooping, skips and jumps, body stalls, and more! You may wish to bring along a second, lightweight hoop (kiddie hoops are good for many of these moves) OR start practicing your hand hooping now so your hands have time to build up resistance to the pressure of the hoops!

Sunday July 22 3:30-5:00pm
Choreography – dramatic beginnings and endings, tempo matching, playing with different music themes, linking moves together with smooth transitions, and more! The class will include time to develop your own short choreographed piece, either alone or working with a partner. This is a great session for anyone interested in performing with us at Illuminares! Bring the hoop you plan to perform with, and if you’d like to test out a potential costume for hoop-ability, bring that too!

Sunday Aug 5 3:30-5:00pm
On-body – working with the hoop at your hips, knees, chest, shoulders, both horizontal and angle hooping. If you have more than one hoop, bring your favourite AND another that is as large as possible – having a slower hoop will help with many of these moves.

The Hoop Path is coming to the Pacific Northwest, and we couldn't be more excited about it. The Hoop Path is an instructional Hooping course designed to foster deeper connections between the Hoop and the Hooper. We are currently offering two workshops, "First Steps" and "The Warrior Path" in each of the following cities: Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver.

Included in this post are descriptions of the two workshops, as well as some of the feedback we have received from those who have taken them.

We have standardized our pricing for 2007 at $65 for the "First Steps" workshop and $50 for all subsequent workshops (e.g. "The Warrior Path"). If you have attended any of our workshops before (in any city) your tuition is $50 for any future workshops, including "First Steps" should you want to take it again. For those who are in serious financial straits and are eager to come, we offer tuition assistance. All you have to do is ask--we will do our best to get you in.

If you would like to organize and promote a Hoop Path workshop in your area, your entire tuition will be waived. In the event the space is donated to us without a rental fee we will extend this generosity by reducing the tuition for everyone who comes to that workshop.
Workshop Descriptions:

The Hoop Path: "First Steps"

This 3 1/2-hour intensive will introduce you to the inspiring myths and powerful metaphors of The Hoop Path, a spiritual approach to hoopdance that has slowly built itself out of Jonathan Baxter's years of daily Hoop Practice. Bax's teaching incorporates prayerful guidance and unique storytelling as well as the straightforward breaking down of moves and practice of new techniques. This workshop is for those of us who already feel a connection with Hooping that goes far deeper than pure fitness, or for those hoopers who yearn to deepen and expand their Practice into subtler levels of awareness and grace. Together we will define and explore Hoop Path terms such as: pe*A*ce, Ritmo, One Tree/Two Tree, and Two Birds; as well as established techniques such as Reversing, Breaking, Paddling and Angle Hooping.

Hoop Path Workshop II: "The Warrior Path"

In this workshop we will explore the "Warrior Style" aspect of the Hoop Path, focusing on off-the-core techniques such as Point, Swing, and Samurai. This workshop is geared towards the hooper who has established a regular Practice and wishes to challenge her/himself and expand into new expressive territory. Since there will be much more active supporting of the hoop with the hands and wrists, a lighter hoop of a smaller diameter would work best for many of the exercises in this workshop. Bax will expound a bit on the Hoop Path Story, introducing new characters to inspire our inner Warrior.

**Here’s some of the feedback we’ve gotten on our previous trips to Cali and the Pacific Northwest!

“Baxter's work is absolutely mindblowing. I've learned enough in his 3 workshops to practice for a year and more... he is a gifted teacher who shares the art of hoopdance in a unique way. Anyone devoted to the hoop shouldn't miss out on this rare opportunity to study with a true master.”

---Christabel, aka Hoopgirl, San Francisco

"It was wonderful to connect with Baxter and hear his philosophy. His terminology was expressed through a story of the Hoop Path and how it came to be. I was inspired and fascinated by his exercises that focused on developing balance and strength. Being blindfolded was a major part of the experience, which encouraged me to go deep into the feeling of it... It was very exciting to finally get paddling, reversals and breaks on a whole new level.

I was buzzing from the experience all night...it was the tip of an iceberg to a whole new level of exercises....a breakthrough. I am once again inspired to continue my hooping practice with a whole new surge of energy and focus.

Thank you Baxter...you're wonderful."

---Diana Lopez (of BodyHoops) Ojai, CA

“For any hoopers who are hesitating or are undecided, I encourage you to give this workshop a try. I have been hooping for less than a year, and I learned SO much from Baxter in a very short amount of time. He is a sincere and inspiring teacher, and he is an incredible hooper. Taking this class made me see hooping in a completely different way. It's no longer just a fun activity full of tricks - hooping can be so much more.

Like Christabel, I wish I could fly down to LA to take this workshop again!”

---Natasha, aka Silverstar, San Francisco

“That was really fun, great sharing of a wonderful story, and lots of things to challenge me in my personal practice. Thank you, Bax!”

--Christa, aka Xta, Vancouver BC

“The class was wonderful. I’ve been working on the opposite current. Its nice to be reinspired to hoop more!”

--Betsy Rose, Seattle

“Thank you for coming, Baxter. That workshop changed my life!”

--Ilana, Los Angeles
