A friend and I rented two kayaks today at noon at NWOC and paddled out into Lake Union. It was such a beautiful day to be out on the water. Very little wind and not much current. The boats that went by left some fun wakes to bounce on. The Duck tours loaded down to full capacity with tourists squawking went by to our amusement.

We paddled over towards the Northeast (towards 520) and found peace and cool views of the houseboats. Then back the Gas Works park then over to Dale Chihuly's studio/boat to eat some wild blackberries off the stems. And then back around to check the boats back in.

It was a nice paddle and it was fun in the middle of the trip to hook up boats and sit back and shoot the bull relaxing and just floating about in the middle of the lake. I mean you don't HAVE to paddle if you don't want.

He developed ulcers all over his skin, he was hit in the face from flying fish. It is an amazing story.

I am a traveller, just returned from New Zealand and will be moving up to Seattle soon, hopefully to get a job as a systems engineer on boats. I used to be a kayak guide up on Orcas Island way back when, and love all sorts of being on the water, so I gotta ask, why the sails prohibition on this tribe? If they were good enough for George Dyson......Grin....

Christmas Caroling by Kayak - Wednesday, October 26, 2005

December 9th, 10th & 11th 6pm -8pm
Every December, NWOC, with the help of the local houseboating community, organizes carolling tours to benefit the Seattle Children's Home http://www.seattlechildrenshome.org and the Homestead Community Land Trust www.homesteadclt.org .
We take 30 people per session, usually stopping at houseboat parties, where we spend twenty minutes or so (seated in our kayaks) singing some of everyone's old favorite carols. Don't worry, you don't need to be a good singer, just game! Carollers pay $40 a head for this unique experience, all of which goes to the above charities. NWOC provides kayaks, gear, guides and song sheets, and a chance to belt out your Christmas cheer in front of people you mostly don't know. Call 206-281-9694 to register. Space is limited and goes quickly, so don't delay! See more details here.

The kayaks used for the class were smallish sit-on-top models (I prefer sit-inside myself).

Unfortunately, when we priced the one she used in the class, it cost more than my Swifty...$500 as opposed to a bit under $400. So we're looking for alternatives that are less. GI Joes has sit-inside models for around $300 and I'm toying with trying to talk her into one of those. If anyone runs into a one person kayak (either an inside or on-top model) could you let me know?

Yesterday, the two of us squeezed into my Perception and went paddling at the lake across the street. It was a bit cramped but still fun.

Anyone possibly up for a last minute evening paddle?

I'll check back in when I get back from dinner, like 7.

I was delighted to find that various park & rec centers in the area have kayak classes. Paddling is fun but I want to eventually learn rescues, etc.

Took one, a parent+kid one at Evrett P&R tonight and it was GREAT. True, the kayaks we used were sit-on-top models and it was an adjustment: they were a lot more willing to tip. The teacher had us practice ditching and then getting back in while in the water and after I did a passable job getting back in, I reached into my pocket to check for my keys, leaned a LITTLE to far and.....OooHHHHH (splash).

The kid took great pleasure in tormenting me about this unplanned water entry on the way home. WHERE is her gratitude?! Feh!
