my senior cat 14 years has developed acne lately. He has to take low dosages of cortisone due to his autoimmune disease in his stomach, and he has kidney problems i keep attention on with special diet.
What can i do about this acne?

Sat, February 2, 2008 - 1:34 PMI was prescribed a steroidal topical ointment that I used for about a week directly on the affected spots. I also changed to a perfume and dye free laundry detergent and dryer sheet. He hasn't had a case since. -

Sun, February 3, 2008 - 10:53 AMthanks, i try the acne stuff i found on the internet with peroxid and cleansing stuff. since he already takes cortisone , i doubt steroids will help. i also wash his mouth after he has eaten, because he does not seem to lick his mouth very well after eating :-))). He is pissed a bit, because he does not like me doctoring aroung on his chin, though...:-) -

I recommend getting a vet approved toothpaste, from a vet, not those online sites, and a pet toothbrush and gently brushing his teeth once a week. God oral hygiene is important as our cats get old. -

Mon, February 18, 2008 - 10:53 AMwell i know:-) but i cannot imagine my cat letting me brush his teeth.... he is pissed when i have to give him eyedrops, make his acne spots in solution and i think i should use the steroids. i will try though because i also want him to live longer :-) ;-) he will hate me though. how do you get cats used to teeth brushing :-) -

No really, just buy the softy vet toothbrushes, prefereably a short stick type. You can go the gentle approach which will take a long time or the quick approach.
Gentle:
1. start by giving kitty a treat, then holding kitty you get softy brush in one hand and gently introduce it to the cat's front teeth.
2. rubbing gently with the rubber brush, convince kitty that this is a fun thing, and try to get cat to open mouth to brush the back teeth
3. in a few months, y ou should see some improvement on toleration level and may even see cooperation!
Quickie:
1. wrap cat tightly in towel with legs bound seperately from head. If you have a cat bag, that works even better, but they cost a little bit.
2. place cat on counter (lay folded towel under kitty for pity's sake!) and gently hold down with your armpit.
3. Using one hand, grab top of cat's head and jaw and pry upwards, careful to avoid fingers going into the angry cats mouth
4. proceed to brush (VERY GENTLY)
5. Kiss kitty profusely and praise kitty for being such a good sport.
6. Release kitty from towel or bag and run for bathroom.

Mon, February 4, 2008 - 3:03 PMOne thing that can aggravate their face is plastic. Make sure their food and water dishes are ceramic and keep them scrupulously clean.

Tue, February 5, 2008 - 2:13 PMI heard that about plastic food dished as well. Keep 'em clean and their little chins won't rub on them.
(My friend's cat's acne was caused by that, or so she figured out through trial and error...) -

Thu, February 7, 2008 - 5:38 PMMy vet is who told me about it. One of my cats had acne and even though I washed the dishes every day, apparently plastic clings to grease. Once I changed to ceramic dishes, she had no more problems.

Mon, February 18, 2008 - 11:01 AMwell, i always had metall dishes and i have ceramics now and they have it. maybe it is also from stress, i clean him a bit after meals, because the baby :-))) does not clean his mouth properly :-)
