Another newbie

Hey all

I found this forum while trying to figure out how to best care for my oldest companion, Bitzli. She's 19, and was dropped off at my house at 4 weeks old. Needless to say, we're attached.

She's recently been having issues, which are more than likely kidney related. However, she's also got an infection that may be skewing the tests a bit. However, at her age, the kidney thing is not exactly uncommon.

I'm just wondering if I can get any insight/help with a few things. After a culture was run on her urine, it was discovered that she has an E. coli infection, but one of the common strains. I'm not sure where she picked this up, as she's an indoor cat. I was feeding her Science Diet Senior with hairball control, plus a 1/4-1/2 can of Pet Guard food. The vet recommended the Science Diet k/d, going on the assumption that, despite the infection, there is still CRF. She's still on the Pet Guard canned food, and also now the k/d dry food. I really am clueles as to where she contracted this infection.

The other would be, what sort of diet do you have your cat on, if they do have CRF? She's okay with the k/d dry, but hated the canned. She really enjoys having that treat of the canned food, and I want to give her the right thing, as long as she'll eat it. If she won't eat it, I'm not going to waste my time, she's lost 2 pounds in the last year, so I'll give her what she'll eat. That's why I started supplementing her regular food with the canned, since I thought she was getting thinner. I didn't know for sure until the recent vet visits.

After a few days of being through with her antibiotics, she will have another urinalysis. If that's clear, another blood test will be done to help determine if she's definitely got CRF. I just want to be prepared for diet changes, etc. if this is the case.

Anyway, this is getting very long, so I'll sign off for now. I'll take any advice you can give me, and am willing to answer any questions you have. Thank you for any help you can give me.
