My baby is skinny. Real skinny. A couple months ago he had a nice little belly flap going and felt heavy and had a nice aroma to his neck. (Neck nuzzlers will know what I mean) I leave for Puerto Rico for 5 days. I come back and he's lost a lot of weight, smells odd, and his coat is grungy. Babysitter kept food in his bowl 24-7 and changed his water. Babysitter didn't notice the weightloss, just attitude change. Could I have missed a steadily decreasing weight because I was too close and this trip helped me to see it? Could this be renal failure? I have to find my Care Credit credit card tonight after school and set up an appointment for him tomorrow. Wish me luck, hopefully it's just he was scared because I left. If this is the case, then the three week trip I take in May will require paying for vet boarding so they can watch him. I will give updates as I have them. My Tazzy is 14.

Re: Unexplained weight loss
Tue, April 24, 2007 - 11:18 AMIs he hungry all the time and antsy? It could be hyperthyroidism, a common condition in elderly cats, and one easily managed. But I'm glad you're taking him to see the vet soon. Best of luck with your kitty! -

Re: Unexplained weight loss
Tue, April 24, 2007 - 2:45 PMHe rarely eats, is sort of finicky, but has been vomitting more and more often. He used to vomit only when he overate because I bought junk food like Chef's Blend. (kitty crack) But this past year he has vomitted almost monthly. Vet found nothing on last visit, but that was before this serious decrease in weight. -

Re: Unexplained weight loss
Tue, April 24, 2007 - 5:56 PMI hope your baby is okay. It sounds like either the thyroid or renal failure. I have lost my last two seniors from both of these. Good luck. Sending my prayers to you and your kitty. -

Re: Unexplained weight loss
Fri, April 27, 2007 - 8:19 AMWent to the vet yesterday. We took an x-ray and found nothing. HE wanted to refer me to San Antonio for a scope thingy which costs >$700, and I said I am a college student on a fixed income. So, we can't affford to test for tumors at this time. We are treating for IBD, and I haven't had a barf session yet. He lost a little over 1 lb in the past two weeks. I bought a special limited ingredient diet for him and he scarfed it down. We may be looking at a food allergy. He isn't allowed anything else to eat except his special food. The vet said there was a possibility of renal failure, but we should treat symptomatically first. If Tazzy continues to vomit with this special food, then we will try the next step. Wish me luck as Tazzy felt chipper last night. -

Update
Thu, May 10, 2007 - 3:32 PMHey folks, thanks for all your e-mails and prayers! Tazzy has had the one puke incident after the vets and I have to watch him for two more weeks. I am leaving for three weeks on a research training trip so I have snagged two babysitters for him. They will be keeping an eye out on his health and will take him to the vet if he shows any weight loss again or if they find puke on the floor. I trust these two men very much and one of them is married to a vet tech, so I should be good to go. He sneezes occassionally and his poop went through a ranbow of odors, but he seems to be gaining a little bit of weight back, not a lot. Keep him in your prayers because he isn't out of the woods yet. Thanks! -
