Re: 16 year old cat loosing weight
Thu, May 10, 2007 - 6:01 AMwhen my cat lost weight, the vet told me that a few ounces isn't much to worry about. but if the cat loses pounds (my cat lost 3lbs very quickly) then that is cause for alarm. It may also depend on your cat's weight too. My senior cat is 24lbs! and a lost pound isn't so bad but if the cat is 10 lbs and loses 2-3 lbs. that is more significant.
I think that if your cat lost a couple pounds quickly then you might want to get to the vet soon. -

Re: 16 year old cat loosing weight
Thu, May 10, 2007 - 10:58 AMA very common occurrence with senior kitties is hyperthyroidism. It causes the kind of weight loss you're describing. You might also notice increased appetite and more activity. The condition should not be just left to progress on its own, because it's bad if left untreated, but with medication it is very manageable. You should get your cat to the vet, though, because that's just one of the things that could be wrong. -

Re: 16 year old cat loosing weight
Sun, May 27, 2007 - 5:07 PMWhen my 17 yr old lost weight quickly she was diagnosed with diabetes. 6 weeks on insulin and she is back up to her normal weight of 7lbs. This was after another vet had told me for a couple of years that she had renal failure. -

Re: 16 year old cat loosing weight
Thu, May 31, 2007 - 4:29 PMSame here with my 15 year old kitty. Two years ago she got down to 6 pounds and now she's 16+! The vet was so happy to see her healthy again after her last visit that she didn't say anything about her huge bulk. (Thank god.)
