Take the train, instead. Get the sleeper car, preferably to yourself and your traveling companion, perhaps the dog's owner, even, and you don't travel through airports. You also only leave your own compartment to eat. You'd have to check the smoking regulations for trains, of course.

I look potentially middle eastern too (we don't know what I am, I'm adopted), and I haven't noticed a change in the way I'm treated at airports because of that. I really wouldn't mess with federal jurisdiction though. They may be more concerned about bombs, but the new technologies they have for even picking up traces of a scent, just by you walking through that "metal detector" keep spreading. I know they have it already going on in the san francisco airport, plastic bag or not, that machine will "smell" it. I'm not talking from paranoia or conspiracy theory, this is in use. Plus, even if you take off from a small airport, you'll at some point be going through a big airport, and there's no guarantee that you won't have to go through security twice. I've had to do that plenty of times flying out through arcata. Even if it's "legal" in the states you're flying to and from, it's still federal law when you're in the airport.

Don't I know it. And I'm part Middle Eastern, which is why I now havve fear of airports! Behavioral disability + no meds = meltdown. Meltdown =t oo much attention. Fortunately I do have a nice, tiny airport nearby. And generally the feds are not actively looking for meds but explosives, and there are ways around plastic bags. Still, its a major, major hassle, with or without the dog, who isn't mine to travel with anyway. And if I really HAVE to get on a plan I'd fly into the nearest "legal" state I possible can, and rent a car!

Ah, I see. I would highly recommend against that, especially flying out of a big airport. They have sensors in a lot of the airports now that can either detect plastic bags through your clothing, and can also sense even the residue of smells on you. Even if you medicate before going into the airport you can trigger the sensor on that and get searched. Remember, even if it's legal in your state, as soon as you check your bags and get onto that security line, you're in federal jurisdiction, and therefore subject to federal laws.

Wow, a Mastiff. I stayed with a friend with two of those for a month. They were the most mellow puppies I had ever met, but I bet no one would bother one! The people at security told me I didn't need to take her back pack off for the xrays if it would interfere with her duties, but it wasn't a problem for me so I put it through, and then they had me let her go through, and then I went through the metal detector. Then they asked me if she'd be if they gave her a little doggie pat down of sorts which was also fine. They were respectful, but thorough.

Hmm, when Whiskey gets her card I wonder if they would search her vest for my medicine? At the very least I would have a better chance to work through my fear of airports , cuz if she is with me my behavior has to be much more controllable, because if I get upset, she'll get upset and nobody needs an upset Mastiff...

Congratulations to you & Sati!

Your troubles are one reason I never make claims about Raleigh. I know what he does for me, but he's had no training. This means he's technically not a service animal.

That last loophole you mentioned is what's causing the problems in my town. There are a lot of people wandering into businesses with their dog going "oh, it's a service dog", and then their animal becomes aggressive in the place, or causes other problems. It's so bad that the local police are trying to totally wash their hands of getting involved in ANY service dog related incident. Even with all of Sati's identification including her state issued tag I couldn't get the police to help me the last time I was denied service, because as the officer said "there are a lot of people just calling their dogs service dogs and it's a civil matter". I mean, they could have just called the number on the tag to confirm her status if they REALLY didn't believe me. Really I think the police in our town are just lazy, but I won't get into that here, I'll just sum it up to say that the service dog issue is far from the only "civil" problems our area has. There is one lady on the university police force in town that is a local advocate, and the next time I have a problem, I'll try to make sure and contact her if possible for help, since she's helped me once before at a campus event when the "hired security" gave me a super hard time because "no dogs were allowed". I'm glad I'm out of school, so I'm not forced to leave the house every day anymore, but I've kind of had it with my town, between the redneck hick potgrowers in the hills, the tweakers, and the otherwise general stupid anarchy that goes on around there. I want to move to key west as soon as my partner sells his chai business in a few years.
And the whole boycott thing, doesn't work so much in this town. As soon as you try to spread word, there are enough people around here that just like causing trouble that you're practically BEGGING to get attacked back for doing so. It's like middle school, but on meth.

Nope! "in training" IS NOT covered by the American w/ Disabilities Act. Any store/restaurant, etc CAN deny access to a dog-in-training. They cannot deny a full-fledged service animal. i usually just explain things and often other customers will speak up for me. If I am still denied, well, I can spend my $$$$ elsewhere. Then I go to my guie dog meetings, tell my story and those people will boycott the business, the story will get around and other puppy raisers will not patronize the establishment.... neither will my friends - the ones I have lunch with nor the ones on line.

I used to get around it in LA because the Penal Code said "a service dog in training with it's trainer..." Well, I've trained obedience and sheep herding before I became a puppy raiser and considered myself as the aforementioned "trainer". Now the loophole has been slammed shut with the addition of "licensed trainer". However it is a felony to represent yourself as a licensed trainer or your animal as a service animal when you are not. Sadly, no one ever checks into that or really prosecutes. their hands are tied! The ADA says it is illegal to ask what a person's disability is.

Thanks for the escalator tip. I could see how that could happen. I was watching her carefully (and myself) since I'm super paranoid about escalators to begin with. unfortunately here, there is an escalator over elevator prevelance, but I've been wary ever since I was a kid and my mom told me this horror story about an escalator that "opened" up and sucked a little girl in. Even just by myself, I'm always aware of buckles, straps, etc, and toes especially, and always know where the emergency stop button is (and we all should be).

I am surprised about the in training thing though, from what I remember about looking at the laws service dogs in training have the same access rights as service dogs. There might be some fine print I didn't read

YAY! Congratulations!

Kudos for thinking of the chewie for her ears!

But I just want to point out a couple of things that my guide dog school had encountered...
1. if the "Terrorist alert" is high, airlines do not let service dogs in training fly in the cabin. I think the qualifier is the *in training* part.

2. They have stopped training their dogs to use escalators. they said too many dogs were getting their paws caught/ripped on them... the part where the step disappears under.

VERY glad to hear you are having some good experiences! YAY!!!

Hi all. My last post was so frantic I thought it would be nice to post about something GREAT on here.
Sati just took her first airplane flight with me!!!
We flew from Arcata to NY with a stopover in Salt Lake City. I have to say it was a really great experience for both of us, and she did fabulous. The only thing she did other than pretty much nap the whole time was shake her head a bit during take off, probably from her ears. I tried to offer her a chewy treat, but she didn't want it. I guess she didn't understand it would help.

The flight crews on both planes were fantastic, and they told me that service dogs are always the best passengers. Honestly, this was one of the nicest flights I'd taken in a while. We flew Delta and called ahead to make sure they knew we were coming, and to get bulkhead seating. She even took the escalators like a champ (we tried to moving walkway first, just in case). I would have practiced at home, but there isn't a single escalator in humboldt county!!!

Our time here has also been fabulous. I really think I was right about where I live really being a bit of a backwater place in regards to this stuff. It helps that there are two training foundations in the area, so people are used to seeing service dogs, but we really haven't been bothered at all. I even had a group of un-parentally supervised kids, about 7 to 11 or so, pass by on the street and while some were going "ooh, doggie", one of them stepped up and told the others "you can't pet that dog, it's working". I was so impressed!

Anyways, just wanted to share the good news!
