Who:
JILL PARKER is an international, award winning instructor, choreographer and director. Jill is the "Mama of the modern tribal fusion bellydance movement", an original member of Fat Chance Belly Dance, director of The San Francisco Foxglove Sweethearts, Ultra Gypsy, Djun Djun, and a frequent collaborator with Theater Flamenco. With 20 years of experience, she has trained many top dancers in the genre. Jill's big heart and deep love for this form shine through in her inspiring classes and intoxicating performances. She is an exceptional teacher with a knack for demystifying this sensuous dance making its techniques accessible to new dancers, while offering tremendous insight for refinement and breakthrough to advanced dancers. She has an amazing wealth of knowledge, is a warm teacher, has a very giving nature, and an easy to understand approach. Why, yes! Yes you are!!!

I am one of the members of 4 Wench Productions and we produce an event called “Tribal Alchemy”. Now I know many of you think because of the word “tribal”, this event has nothing to offer to YOU. This would be incorrect.

What is Alchemy? By definition, alchemy is “ A medieval chemical philosophy having as its asserted aims the transmutation of base metals into gold, the discovery of the panacea, and the preparation of the elixir of longevity. “ How this translates to US is the mixture of different elements of dance and music to create something entirely new.

We offer affordable workshops, 36.00 each (which are approximately one week’s worth of fast food for most) and these workshops are instructed by some of the most sought after teachers around.

For the musicians, we have with us this year Mr. Dave Hall, who has toured with Solace Live and himself has been a drumming instructor for over 15 years. He has a vast knowledge base and much to offer.

For dancers who are not primarily of the “tribal” persuasion, one of our most requested an instructor (returning for a THIRD year) is Mira Betz. Her knowledge base is SO vast; it would fill this page to list every workshop topic she works with. She has taught workshops on Moroccan folkloric dance with us and this year is offering TWO very different workshops (one on improvisation skills and the other is all about the Taxeem!)

We have SOOZ, who is Fat Chance certified coming to share the ATS goodness. We have Theatrical bellydance, we have Belladonna bringing her unbelievable SWORD skills to teach. The list goes on and on!

The fact is, most bellydancers (no matter what style they fall into) use the same dance vocabulary. Our event offers the chance to learn some new ways to USE those moves, perhaps give you a FRESH view of your dance, and maybe turn you on to something you might not have previously been willing to try.

For 36.00 and a few short hours of your time, you can get a glimpse of something new and maybe start to figure out how some dancers “do that stuff”.

Most importantly, this event is NON PROFIT and benefits Safe Haven of Tarrant County. This center is a shelter and provides assistance for women and children who are affected by domestic violence. Silvia Salamanca is a life-long dancer from Mallorca, Spain. She started her career as a belly dancer in 2001, when realizing the enormous benefits that this art-form brings to women in both body and spirit (something that she felt truly missing in other dance practices). From her first teachers, Tasnim Melendres and the acclaimed Nur Banu, two natural born-Egyptians, she realized how with the practice of belly dance that women can get closer to their self identity and discover oneself in a new level, increasing self-esteem, releasing stress and getting deeply in touch with the feminine essence in their soul.

With her work in the field of Zambra Mora (Spanish gypsy-oriental dance fusion) Silvia has gained international recognition and is currently invited to teach workshops and perform in major festivals in Europe and across the USA, and will be part next November of the international Jury of the Contest for the Belly Dancer of the World hosted in Germany.

Silvia is also the co-director of Shunyata Belly Dance, the tribal-style company that captivates audiences at the Texas Renaissance Festival and has recently launched its first instructional DVD.

Passionate about teaching and performing, Angela Nations is a professional belly dancer with over 19 years of formal dance training. She studied the Erick Hawkins Modern Dance technique at Texas State University, in addition to jazz and ballet. She has over 9 years Middle Eastern dance experience in the Cabaret, ITS (Improvisational Tribal Style) and Tribal Fusion styles. She is currently an instructor, choreographer, and performer in Austin, TX and performs at workshops, faires, and events throughout Texas. Her expressive and fluid style, layered upon precise, controlled movements is a blend of various dance techniques combined with a dynamic presence that captivates and entertains.

Lauren Checchio attended the Ali Akbar College of Music in California, and has studied with some of the best percussionists in the world, including Swapan Chaudhuri, Zakir Hussain, Anindo Chatterjee, Glen Velez, and Ty Burhoe. Lauren traveled to the Middle East to study the art of the doumbek, and to Hawaii, to study tabla under Daniel Paul, one of the world’s few tabla tarang players.

Lauren is the director of percussion of the UT Middle Eastern Ensemble. She has played and recorded with 1001 Nights Orchestra, Oliver Rajamani, The Gypsies, Teye & Viva Flamenco, Govinda, Anita Jung, Ojala, among others, in Austin, TX. Lauren is also in demand as a teacher of percussion, giving both private lessons and group workshops.

9:30 am – 12:30 pm: Tribal Belly Dance Meets Flamenco! with Silvia Salamanca
A gypsy Spanish twist to tribal movements and combinations. Combine the precision and sharpness of tribal with the fire of flamenco expression and you get a series of exciting steps, combinations and short routine to take home and leave everybody speechless! Emphasis will be put on posture, arms and spins. Bring a skirt and your best ole!

Join us for a celebration of belly dance in all its forms (including cabaret and tribal) in this evening show from to be held in the grand ballroom at the Blue Bubble Ballroom. The first part of the evening (from 7:30 to 9:30) will include performances by belly dance solists and groups. Special guests will include the ladies of Shunyata Belly Dance (Silvia and Angela), and drummer Lauren Checchio.

About Low Lives ::
(Brooklyn, Miami, Houston)- Low Lives is a one-night exhibition of live performance-based works transmitted via the internet and projected in real time at three venues throughout the U.S.-- labotanica, Houston at Project Row Houses; FiveMyles, Brooklyn; and Diaspora Vibe Gallery, Miami. Low Lives examines works that explore the potential of performance practice presented live through online broadcasting networks. These networks, though seldom utilized for performance art, provide a new alternative and efficient medium for presenting and viewing performances.

Curated by Brooklyn-based artist and curator, Jorge Rojas, Low Lives embraces works with a lo-fi aesthetic such as low pixel image and sound quality, contributing to a raw, DIY and sometimes voyeuristic quality in the transmission and reception of the work. The artists and artist collectives participating in this exhibition will transmit their performances from countries including Argentina, Austria, Canada, England, France, Germany, Macedonia, Mexico, United States, Vietnam and Wales. Houston artists include Y. E. Torres (ms.YET) & Sandy Ewen.

“Low Lives is about not simply the presentation of performative gestures at a particular place and time but also about the transmission of these moments and what gets lost, conveyed, blurred, and reconfigured when utilizing this medium,” states Curator Jorge Rojas. Rojas, whose artwork has increasingly involved performative elements, proposed this exhibition to FiveMyles, Diaspora Vibe Gallery, and labotanica because of their commitment to experimental art and framing local and international art-making.

Join Shakra for an extensive dissection of high impact movement to discover empowerment through power moves. Using action-packed movements from specimens such as West African Dance, Bhangra, and their own Transfusion Style, Shakra will show you how to harness personal power and channel that energy to areas of the body where it is needed most. This workshop will also observe ways we lose physical and mental energy that affects endurance and performance. ~Stage flooring: 3/4" plywood raised on 1x4 slats. Covered by 1/8" tempered hardboard. (As soon as we get the seating configuration we will let you know of the stage area. Don't worry you will not have a little stage in the middle of the room as shown in the picture )
~Dressing rooms are availabe but please come prepared as much as possible because space is limited.
~No fire or animals are allowed in the show.

Hey there! Second Tuesday Hostess at Avant Garden, Houston, here. I'm eager to shine the spotlight on all our fabo troupes and student groups at Avant Garden. My last show had Gabriela and her student group performing. It was the student's first performance ever and they were amazing. So don't be shy. Teachers, get your students to do one or two five minute numbers in the show. Troupes are also welcome. Any style.

I have a slot available in the May 12th show for either a duet, troupe or student group to come and shine. I also have slots available in August for both soloists and groups. June, July and October are booked! Don't delay in getting to me so I can add you to the lineup!

And.... Does anyone do bollywood here? I would love to add other dance forms to the mix too.

Mira Betz: Isolations and Layering Fri. 4:00pm to 6:00pm

A slow build to complicated layering.

Asharah: Pops, Locks, and Tick Tocks
Fri. 6:30pm to 8:30 pm
Inspired by robots, experimental electronic music, and the poppin' and lockin' B-Boys of the 70s and 80s, Asharah has integrated mechanical movements into her expressive tribal fusion performances. In this workshop, Asharah will lead students through an intense warm up and then will show students how to break down traditional bellydance movements such as vertical hip figure-8s, shoulder rolls, torso undulations, turns, and arm waves into smaller and sharper parts to give your performances a robotic and creepy edge. After drilling these movements, she'll teach a short combination that demonstrates how these movements can be used in a performance.
She'll also briefly discuss concepts of electronic music, how it is created, and how to listen to the nuances of music made by machines and computers.
~Saturday Workshops~

The more you know, the more confidently you will express your unique Voice. Expand your dance vocabulary, and explore the energizing 9/8 rhythm! Learn the dance in its true form, and then fuse it to other dance elements. Turkish Rom dance is richly expressive and playful, passionate and fun. Students will dance the pure form to traditional music in 9/8 time signature. Then we will use non-traditional music to create a scintillating, original fusion choreography, drawing on the technique and knowledge of the folkloric form. Please bring a notebook, and wear yoga pants, a simple hip sash and a comfortable top.

Frederique David: New 'UrbanTribal Style' Moves (always evolving)
Sat. 12:30pm to 2:30pm
Want to add to your tribal vocabulary? Learn new moves with the ATS concept of lead and follow developed with non-verbal cues. Frédérique has created new Urban Tribal moves that have been inspired by a variety of ancient and modern dances with fundamental roots in ATS and Cabaret stylized belly dance. Class will begin with elementary yoga / palates based stretches / exercises, ending with isometric upper body strengthening that will help develop excellent upper body posture for dancing as well as our daily life. Be prepared to focus on strong technique throughout the class. By the end we will all be dancing new tribal moves together, as a tribe. *Prior knowledge in ATS is recommended but not necessary. I will go over the concept in class.*

Urban Gypsy: Tribal Skirt Sat. 3:00pm to 5:00pm

Add some Rumba style Flamenco flair to your tribal repertoire. Sahira and Zymirrah will teach a vocabulary of improvisational skirt moves with their associated cues. Special attention will be given to Spanish skirt stylings and body attitude.

Visions in Dance: WANTED: FIERCE DANCERS WITH BIG STICKS!
Sun. 10:00am to 12:00pm

Visions In Dance challenges you to dance different, to try something unusual. We will teach a belly dance/modern dance fusion choreography performed with... staffs. Explore this rarely used prop, as we present a choreography that will delve into how to utilize the staff without falling into traditional cane moves. We will also explore the essence of Visions choreography: why particular moves are picked, the nuances within a movement, and how it all ties into a story. Come ready to sweat! We ask that you please bring your own 4' tall, 1 1/2" diameter staff as we will only have a few extras (a wooden closet dowel rod cut to size will do). Knee pads are also recommended. Steven Of Atash Maya San Diego CA: THE SLOW & SUBTLE
Sun. 12:30pm to 3:30pm

This workshop will focus on slowing down and integrating the core to initiate those slow, gooey movements. The warm-up is yogalates based and will concentrate on core, balance, and strengthening exercises that will be applied to the dance form. In the workshop students will drill various slow movements focusing on the core and learn how making subtle changes to the simple movements translates to noticeable beauty. Students will also learn Steven’s Atash Mayan stylized gooey combinations that can be used in an improvisational situation or in choreography.

His dance company, Sweft Feet Dance, was born in October 2006 and focuses on diversity through movement.

We are looking for volunteers to help us cheer on the participants who are raising money and awareness for such an important cause. Beginner to advanced - all levels of dancers are welcome- just looking for a lot of great attitudes and enthusiasm. We would LOVE to have some drummers as well!

This multi-level workshop will outline two tribal fusion combinations emphasizing technique and isolation. The first
combination will incorporate the building blocks of UNMATA's modern bellydance style. The second combination will focus primarily on the Hula Fusion nuance.Each movement will be outlined within a tribal cueing system so that it may be added to any troupe's choreography or tribal vocabulary. Amy will describe and drill each individual movement,then fasten them together into an accessible tribal combo that will be practiced in useful group and duet formations.
This workshop will be fun, fast, and furious. UNMATA believes in beat-your-butt technical practice, so bring water and come prepared to sweat.

This intense workshop focuses on fast! Amy will lay down the stylistic foundation and technical breakdown for UNMATA's awe-inspiring omis, ferocious shimmies, and bad-ass body pops.Each movement will include "transition-training" so it can be used alone or linked with other movements to create a short choreography. WORKSHOP: "Overlaying Isolations, Amy Sigil Style"

Amy's Art of Overlay is at the heart of this intermediate toadvanced bellydance workshop aimed to add expressive layers and distinction to your dance style. Although controlled simultaneous movement is a complex idea, this class provides a simple approach certain to bring impressive results.Beginning with a thorough breakdown of basic isolation technique, Amy will expand such elements as core strength and relaxed tension, and then demonstrate helpful exercises that are necessary to develop an awareness needed to isolate key muscle groups. Then she will teach and drill an isolation combo that incorporates the artistic flare unique to Amy Sigil and UNMATA.

Because this class is designed for the intermediate to advanced dancer, a sufficient understanding of balance and timing is prerequisite.

Is anyone interested in doing a dance for the cancer patients at Anderson Cancer Center at the Rotary House International in the Medical Center?
It is a hotel that is part of the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (it's physically connected to the hospitals) and only patients and their family members are allowed to stay here. There are people here from all over the U.S. and also all over the world. Many people have to stay here months at a time for treatment!!

One of the services offered is providing a series of weekly events for the patients and families. We are currently looking for dancer volunteers to come over and share their talents with us. They tell us that it is one of their favorite ways to get their minds off of the difficulties that they have to face each day.

So, if you have a show that you've been working on and would like to practice in front of an audience, please consider sharing your time with us. If you don't usually perform, but wouldn't mind doing some freestyles, this would be a great opportunity for you!--or any combination of these things. We would love to have you!!

KAREN BARBEE ADKISSON – San Antonio, Texas. Karen is a leading performer and instructor of Middle Eastern dancing. Karen has been dancing for 30 eyars and has more than 200 students taking belly dance classes in her studio. She trained in Cairo, Egypt, with some of the most accomplished danchers in the world and has participated in major symposiums in Los Angeles, Houston, New York, Seattle and numerous other cities as well as in the Caribbean. She performed in an international music video with Arab singer, Ziad Ansari. The video became a hit in the Middle East where it is still aired. Karen has several instructional videos and teaches and performs all over the country. Several members of her dance troupe, Karen’s Karavan, will also be performing in the shows. She will be teaching combinations on Friday. She will also share her secrets for dance performances in small restaurant settings to large stages. Sunday she will be teaching a new choreography. SHIREEM – Corpus Christi, Texas. Shireem, sponsor of Shimmy By The Sea and Shimmy AT Sea Belly Dance Cruise, has been teaching and performing since 1976. This just in: The morning of Tuesday, Feb 27, armed robbers at the London FedEx terminal speed away in a FexEx truck containing the famed “I love Turkish Belly Dance” DVDs by Sarah Skinner. The DVDs were reported to be heading to Wales for distribution.

Be warned, these belly dancing thieves are reported to be armed and shaken!

Hi all =)

I apologize in advance if you see this post in more than one place, but I'm excited and would like to spread the word.

I'm a pretty new bellydancer, and of course I've fallen in love with Melodia pants. Now, I know they are super stretchy, but I'm not quite confident in their ability to fit over my rather sizeable posterior in an XL. I know I'm not the only BBW dancer out there, so I decided to message Bonnie from Melodia Designs. I was rather excited to find out they are considering adding an XXL to their size range.

BEAUMONT ART STUDIO - BELLY DANCING CLASS

Hello, Aminah!

Your friend Renee' introduced us Saturday night at the haflia at MacKenzie's. I am the bellydancing teacher at The Art Studio in Beaumont.

We meet on Tuesdays from 5:45-6:45 pm at the Studio at 720 Franklin. The class enrollment is still mobile at this point because we haven't had classes in a few years, so there is still room for dancers. The ladies are wearing comfy stuff to workout and all are beginners. Fee is $35 per month and there is no membership required.

At The Art Studio we have working artists of all kinds: pottery, painters, sculptors, actors, dancers, photographers and musicians. I direct plays there and oversee the dance aspects and we also have band nights every month. Unsigned bands get to play their original stuff, no covers; some months it's a younger crowd and others it's more adult. This coming Sat., Feb. 3, we have a free reception from 7-10 pm for the new gallery display. We do that every month. Our theater and band nights are a $10 ticket, very simple. We don't try to be mainstream and don't want to be.

The dance commuity is getting together to do a benefit in honor of the recently deceased Daniela Urbaez Oliveras and Pedro Oliveras of DanMar Studio in Houston. Here are the details:

Daniela Urbaez Oliveras and Pedro Oliveras - Killed in Wrong-Way Accident

Two important and beloved members of our dance and music community have been taken from us by a tragic automobile accident.

Daniela Urbaez Olivares, and her husband Pedro Olivares, were killed early on January 1 by a driver heading the wrong way on the Westpark Toll Road.

Recently married, and both students at University of Houston, Daniela and Pedro were teachers and performers with the Danmar Dance Studio in Katy, Texas. They were also core members of the Danmar Flamenco Troupe and the new Tradicion Gaitera, showcasing the diverse music and culture of their native Venezuela.

Pedro was a superb violin, string and keyboard player, an arranger, a professional D.J., and performed constantly in styles from classical music to Latin and belly dance.

Daniela will be remembered as an immensely talented dancer and performer across a stunning range of styles, choreographer, teacher, and a mentor and splendid role model to her hundreds of students.

Above all, we can tell you from personal experience that both Pedro and Daniela were immensely supportive of other dancers and musicians, powerfully hard-working, always there with a kind word, and ready to jump in and lend a hand. Their hearts and souls were as gracious, as full of love, and as boundless as their diverse talents.

We have lost a beautiful light in our lives...and can barely conceive of the pain their families are now suffering. What can we do, but to try to console the living, and to keep Daniela and Pedro's memories alive in our own hearts.

Their joint funeral will be this Thursday, January 4, at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway. The service is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. There will be a visitation on Wednesday, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. If you were touched and inspired by the lives of Pedro and Daniela, as were we, you may wish to attend in support of the Urbaez and Olivares families.

Bellydancers and Drummers Needed

Anyone near or around San Antonio or willing to come to San Antonio for a day. Details arent quite in full detail as of yet. But what I do know is that the event is sometime in October. This is to raise awareness of the need of the arts in schools. This particularly is needed at Woodlawn Elementary. As they dont not have art classes available for them. This one day event will help bring the community together and let them know the importance of the arts in our childrens lives and in our community. If you can spare your time and volunteer an hour of your time please let me know ASAP. I will keep you updated as the event gets closer as what is needed. Thank you to any future responses.
