going NUTS!

sooooooooooo, i was raw for three weeks and now that the cleanse is complete im veggie again with a bit more of a raw influence. while on the cleanse i used recipes from the net and from ani's raw ktichen.

i have one question....what's up with all the NUTS! almost all of her recipes involve nuts and its simply too much! even if nuts are soaked they are still a challenge to digest and i have heard that eating loads of nuts might actualy create a stess on the body...which doesn't sound all that cleansing.

the whole nut thing drove us nutty (ok, i swear ill stop with the nut jokes)..and gave a few of us "NUT GUT". is it realy necessary to eat so many nuts if your raw foodist?

    No, seriously whats up with nut gut?.........even when the nuts are sprouted.

      There is some good information in a book I have "The 80/10/10 Diet", about this topic. Part of the issue with the heavy nut consumption of most raw foodists, is the fat content. Not because of calories and such, but because of the many negative health effects, including blood sugar problems.

        Nuts aren't supposed to be eaten in large quantities, that's the problem.
        if we didn't have the mechanical processing equipment that we have today, we'd have to individually shell every one of those cashews and almonds before eating it, and that would naturally deter us from eating more than we should. It's way too easy for us to eat nut butters by the tablespoonful, dump 1/2 lb. of macadamias into the cuisinart, etc....it's the same thing as people eating so much meat, it's because they can go to the store and pick up a pound of beef without having to hunt, kill or clean it. People would eat a lot less meat if they had to get it the old fashioned way.

        So although i'm in love with technology, in fact it gets me HOT much of the time (...mmmm....i HEART my iPod...) some technologies have taken us too far out of touch with what is truly good for us.

        I tend to eat more nuts when i feel cold, and back off when my metabolism is doing ok without them. I almost gave up on 100% raw because i was freezing in the winter, but then i decided to try consciously eating more fats like avocado, coconut and nut butters and it's worked well for me. I will back off the nuts when it gets warmer. Maybe we should try eating like the birds & squirrels. Nuts and seeds don't come into season until it's nearly fall, when there is a need to store up for the cold weather. By April i expect to be living happily off of my fruits and veggies.
