Re: New Temple
Mon, May 19, 2008 - 6:37 PMWe are a lay Buddhist organization serving the needs of Shinnyo-en followers and their communities throughout the Americas. We are directly linked to the dharma stream of our parent temple and its worldwide headquarters located in Tachikawa, Japan. Keishu-sama, the head of our order, was there and the ceremony was fantastic! -

Mon, May 19, 2008 - 11:04 PMMore to the point:
A quick google search resulted in several sites.
From them I gather that Shinnyo-en is a
New Religious Movement founded in Japan in
1951. It seems to have been reorganized from
two predecessor organizations. I'm assuming
that this re-organization has something to do with
WW II and the new constitution. The leadership
of the the movement remains in the Ito family.
Its teachings seem to be based at least in part on
Shingon tradition. -

Re: New Temple
Sat, May 31, 2008 - 5:08 PMShinnyo En is a form of Buddhism established in Japan. It is a sub-school of Vajrayana, which is the esoteric branch of Mahayana Buddhism. There are three major forms of esoteric Buddhism in Japan, including Shingon, Tendai, and Shinnyo En. Shinnyo En is unique in that it has sesshin meditation training, powers of bakku daiju, and is the form of esoteric practice that is open to lay practitioners. Shingon and Tendai teachings are ultimately only available for practice by monks, whereas Shinnyo En practice is open to all.
The Founder, Shinjo Ito, was originally an aircraft engineer in pre-war Japan. In 1936, he resigned and together with his wife founded Shinnyo En. They have since dedicated their lives to religious pursuit.
Shinnyo En has temples and meeting places in many countries. In the United States, temples are located in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Honolulu, Chicago, and New York. The temple in Chicago is the largest Buddhist temple in the United States.
Shinnyo En is translated to mean "garden of truth," or "garden of Tathata." Tathata is a fundamental concept in Mahayana philosophy and is interpreted as the true nature of all phenomena or as the original state of things.
Shinnyo En is based on the Nirvana Sutra (Mahaparinirvana Sutra is the long name) which is the final Buddhist sutra. Other Buddhist sutras also have a place in Shinnyo En, but the Nirvana sutra is the most prominent.

Re: New Temple
Sun, June 1, 2008 - 7:53 AMThank you very much for such a comprehensive overview. I had never heard of this stream before, and am very glad that you have shared it with us.
I am often so amazed at how diverse and alive Buddhism is. Mahayana, Vajrayana, Terravadin - Each has such a deep and meaningful history, and so many groups that fall inside of those wider circles (or between them). It reminds me a great deal of The Sandokai (Harmony of Difference and Equality) where it says:
"The way has no northern or southern ancestors, The spiritual source shines clear in the light, branching streams flow on in the dark."
How beautiful are all of the branching streams
