Hello everyone, so glad to find this tribe :)
I am very interested in meditation and I am wondering if there are any meditation groups or schools near Albany that don't necessarily get too religious. I'm a bit of a Taoist I suppose, so I'm looking for somewhere that I don't have to bow to statues or sign up with any particular dogma in order to have a good meditation. I could use some instruction or just a good environment to practice in. I go to the Taoist Center once a month for their meditation meetings and I love it, they use gongs which really helps me to clear my mind, but I would like to train my mind more often.
So if anyone can suggest a group or place to check out I would appreciate that greatly. Thank you :)

Re: Meditation school
Tue, March 4, 2008 - 5:17 PMSo I found this so far...
www.eastbaydharma.org/Baraz/index.html
they meet at the Berkeley Buddhist Monastery once a week and I see they have other classes at the Monastery as well (www.berkeleymonastery.org/). Can anyone that has been there suggest what classes a newb like myself should be able to attend? -

Re: Meditation school
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 11:36 AMI attended James Baraz' 6-week introduction to meditation class, which he offers at least once a year.
He began by introducing the purpose of meditation as a dharma practice, led one or two very short guided meditations, and then gave a talk about meditation practice. In following weeks the meditations became longer and we were invited to share our experiences and questions. By the end we were meditating together for about 30-40 minutes per sitting.
James has become a favorite teacher of mine, someone I seek out often. He's kind and very warmhearted. For several years I drove from my home in Sacramento to Berkeley each week to sit with his weekly group.
Feel free to message me if you have specific questions. I'm a big fan of James.

There is a fantastic meditation teacher in the East Bay at the YMCA in Oakland. Check out www.sfawakenedmind.org/schedule.html.
Cheers!
