N00b humbly seeks advice :)

topic posted Sun, August 5, 2007 - 12:16 PM by  Ryan
I'm about to join a Bagua school, have done some research and am looking for any advice people are willing to give to someone with a background in largely external combative arts who's looking to make the jump into the internal world.

Thanks! :D

I studied Karate, Ninjutsu and Arnis. Now I only study Yangjia Michuan Taijiquan, I have absolutely no regrets

I, too, have studied a bit of Ninjutsu and Arnis. Never had I been thrown by my skin before Ninjutsu. :P

Does your Taijiquan do much combat training? One of the things I'm worried about is that I'll miss out on that by taking an internal art. I know they all started as combative arts for the most part, but that most places only teach them for the health benefits. While I am very interested in the health benefits, I feel that in today's world, everyone should have some combat training, and I'm not willing to give that up. I suppose that that's something I need to take up with my prospective Sifu.

How did you make the move from such aggressive arts to Taiji?

If you've been studying for awhile, you know about the value of carefully choosing teachers, judging information, testing applications and check out other schools. So, if you've found a teacher who you can learn from, go for it. These internal energy practices are very practical and pragmatic if you are able to practice, listen and search enough.

Seek the same kind of veracity and power that you have now through being soft.

      Well said :D

I shall keep that one very much in mind as I train. :)

Random: Do any of you guys have experience with Park Bok Nam's books? I have a couple of them and am getting ready to start working on them, as the Bagua school where I'll be going doesn't seem to have a lot of Park's body conditioning techniques.

Also, any must have Bagua books out there?

Hm. I may have to post this as its own thread.

      Thanks :D
