Death Rock Dive Bar was coined by DJ Death Boy in effort to breathe
some *life* back into a semi-dying subculture, the Death Rocker
community. Finding bands that tap into the vein (puns intended) of
"real music", versus much of the Electro Bowel Movement (fuck that
shit, right?) that has infected the "scene" since the rave culture
ended. Electronic musicians are not shunned, but when you go to see a
live show and somebody comes up on stage with a laptop and a
microphone, doesn't it make you wish that there was a full band there
instead? Come hang out with us, see some local acts and hear all your
favorite death rock tunes the rest of the night!!!

starting a book on old school sf bay area punk/deathrock

hey, some of you may know me, julie generic. i have done a zine called weird weather in the past and while going through these tribes i realized i really want to put together a book of the Old Days. i live up in ukiah and jayed (feederz) also does, we are going to collaborate on this project.

here are a few of the things it will cover:

this book will be both a requiem and a revival of ALL old school punk stories and art, focus on SF bay area. the idea is to get writing, interviews, art etc., from people, alive and dead, who made this city a mecca of demented artistry during the years that punk thrived. i expect there will be certain cross-overs too, as 'genre' lines were not so finely drawn back then.

we will not be covering rivet, industrial, or any of those current manifestations of popular underground music because...well, it covers itself and i am not a huge fan (i do listen but not with the same passion and sense of connection).

what you can do to contribute:

* ideas for the title.
* art: got old flyers, pictures, photos? collage? anything that relates to the topic.
* RIP page(s): photos, music, art of people who are gone; or just a memorandum for someone you miss.
* writing: stories from your personal experiences on the street, in the clubs, with the bands, being there and what was going on with you in general.
* who's doing what now: bands, people, pets; interviews?
* ideas for issue themes: the farm, the mabuhay, the on broadway, powell punks, skate scene (jaks of course!), the early deathrock scene.
* contact page: who you are and how to get in touch so you can perhaps connect with old friends who are NOT dead yet.
* any other ideas you might have: brainstorm with me!

the topics will be broken down into chapters like, and RIP chapter, a 'where are they now' chapter, etc. and this needs to be NON FICTION. in our case, truth is stranger than fiction.

i always knew i'd put together a book, and this is it. we will be approaching vic vale first for publishing.

You may have remembered my fatal adventures as Grand Dame of the Grand Guignol at the Hypnodrome over the past few years. The venue is San Francisco’s only full time horror theatre, recreating the infamous Parisian Shock Plays of the 1920s, plus new works in the genre.

Debuting this month is the latest installment of terror- “Hypnodrome Head Trips,” featuring two brand new plays by FX master Jonathan Horton. (This is the man who has created both a bloodied cast of my severed ear for the Guignol play “The Beast”, AND a full Jill Tracy mask for the film “Ice Cream Ants.” He’s tops in my book.) THE JULIET DRUG and THE GLASS WOMB, are the first chapters of writer/designer Horton’s original theatrical sci-fi serial, premiering at the Hypnodrome and highlighted by fantastic visual effects created and constructed by the author himself!

It must be weird for bands to finally slip into suspended animation, as in this case. Everyone accepts they have gone but it’s not beyond the wildest realms of the imagination to believe some worthy release of remnants may appear over the next few years for the dedicated. Meanwhile, here’s the final official release closest to their passing, a five track record available on both vinyl or CD, and what I assume is a decent selection come cross-section of their noisy inclinations.

You get a real pot-pourri explosion throughout ‘Jackalope Rising’ where pureed brains are mixed with static to create an amusing and strangely enjoyable set of musical segues in a slurred, crackling enterprise, where samples and lyrical snapshots are witnessed bobbing or drowning along a rumbling rhythmical route. You also find more power emanating in the softer-shod ‘Cobrador Minutero’, like a rampant Mexican Blondie. If that wasn’t thrilling enough there is the strained punky nuances of ‘Topanga Canyon Torture’ in which skewed romantic admiration and regret tumbles over rolling drums, bleeding keyboards and affronted guitar.

The claustrophobic drum/keyboard influence of ‘Swill’ has stiffer vocals backing into it all, and it bristles through to a snuffling conclusion, although I do wish I hadn’t mistaken the words knotty linkage for snottilingus! Then it’s all over bar the stern and angry ‘Olympics’ where the punky flexing slams around some attractive, sleek energies.

More than an anti-climax. But still weird.

Black Ice has been keeping very busy. Aside from playing some October dates on the east coast that went very well including shows with Get Precious, the Vanity Set, and Neptune, their "Terrible Birds" album on Hungry Eye has been racking up some excellent reviews stateside and in Europe. They have been working on new material. You can preview some it on a demo they are selling at shows. Speaking of shows, they are playing an amazing one on January 28th with Einstuerzende Neubauten's Blixa Bargeld, Savage Republic, and Comets on Fire at Studio Z on 11th Street in San Francisco. If you yet to hear them, get yourself to our website to download some mp3s.
