)n 01 December 2007, Sports Basement joined together with local yoga teachers to give a yoga gift to the community.
Next yoga class:

• Sunday, 30 December 2007 - 10:30 - 12:00 noon. -
• Yoga Flow - with Annie Leguennec

Yoga Teachers of various styles (Iyengar Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Vinyasa, Raja Yoga, Kundalini, Anasara Yoga, Yin Yoga, Power Yoga, Anna Forrest Yoga, etc.) will present their unique connection with the yogic path.

Check back each month and see who’s in the mix – free yoga classes by yoga teachers of all walks of life. Official Website: http://ynottony.com/yoga1.htm

And, if you are a yoga teacher (or a soon to graduate yoga teacher) looking to share your knowledge, practice karma yoga (community service), and put yourself in the public eye, come join in & volunteer your services making yoga affordable for every individual. Pick one Sunday per month . . Teach as many months as you would enjoy doing. . . .

Yoga teachers will receive a $25.00 gift certificate from Sports Basement (per yoga class) & can use the platform as a way of promoting themselves and their unique yoga experience.

Regardless, it's a grand opportunity to start the year on the right path, meet some like minded individuals, see life in a different light, & calm the mind.

* Yoga teachers of all schools of yoga are invited to teach.
New here! I've recently taken a hiatus from teaching for personal reasons mostly, but also because I have students who complain about the costs of yoga classes. I teach at a community center and at my job (no charge for my coworkers) I mean there are so many studios in this city alone, no matter where you live there's one around the corner. So accessibility isn't the issue, obviously, but costs, costs, costs!
anyway, I was just curious how one obtains space to offer donation yoga? I know you can rent the space, but does it get expensive? Just curious. I would like to do more donation-based teaching and start going to more donation-based classes myself.

There is no minimum donation for attendance. 100% of the proceeds go to the instructors. Yoga Mob spaces are provided to qualified instructors at no charge.

Instructor Bio: Jonathan Reynolds has completed teacher trainings with the White Lotus Foundation, Erich Schiffmann, Darren Main, BaronBaptiste and Greenpath Yoga.

He is the founder of Learning To Listen, a global community dedicated to spreading tools for conscious living, and has written two books: Poetic Listening and Learning To Listen: Simplifying Spiritual Practice; and has created a meditation CD - Learning To Listen: Simplifying Meditation.

His yoga class can be both physically and mentally challenging, yet remains beginner friendly. By using vinyasa (roughly sun salutations) as yoga's physical building block, we can realize the breath as the building block of consciousness. Yoga as meditation allows us to experience life's honesty by transcending perceived limitations, building in organic ways an appreciation of love, patience, generosity, and union. Both seated meditation and chanting are used as part of the experience.

See you soon!

Hi - we are looking for covered/indoor space to hold approx 10-12 people for Donation Ashtanga Yoga held on Sundays from 0900 - 1030.

Right now, we are practicing Ashtanga every Sunday behind the Burlingame Recreation Center in Washington Park. With the inclement weather approaching, we'd like to take it inside, preferably Burlingame or San Mateo.

We are open to suggestions as to how to pay for the space. Since this is Donation Yoga on the Peninsula, we do not charge anyone for practicing Ashtanga.

Ideally, we'd like to have some kind of setup similar to "YogaMob" in San Francisco, "Yoga Mob is a part of the growing movement towards donation based yoga classes in the Bay Area. Yoga Mob is located in a 4000 sq. ft. live/work warehouse at 3359 Cesar Chavez at Mission. This space is provided to qualified instructors at no charge. Due to the lack of overhead, donation based classes can be offered to the yoga community for as much or as little as one is moved to donate. For those of us who practice regularly but are on a limited budget, community spaces like these are an invaluable resource."

So if you have some space you'd like to donate, please contact James Murphy at burlingameyoga@hotmail.com -

Pay what you can afford or free yoga...Yoga should be accessible to absolutely everyone regardless of financial resources. Voluntary donations accepted.

We started giving free yoga classes at the park during our teacher training, to practice giving classes. After getting our certifications we decided to continue giving classes by donation. We are the first in the whole island of Puerto Rico to do this. We have been exploring the idea of turning this into a donation/yoga/non-profit. I saw your tribe and it was really inspiring. Yoga Mob seemed like what we want to do. We would LOVE to do something like that here. There is no such thing in Puerto Rico yet and we feel it could benefit so many people. But we don't have funds, let alone properties, to start any of this, just ideas and commitment. How do we approach people to donate/lend a space for yoga class? Can you point us in the right direction? We are very excited about the possibilities. Thank you!

I just opened a new yoga / dance studio in san jose - Prakasa Ma ( http://www.prakasama.com and http://tribes.tribe.net/prakasama ). I'd love to have the studio offer a few donation based classes, so I'm hoping to get suggestions and feedback from members of this tribe who have already gone this route. There's so much more of this going on in san francisco - very little happening in san jose, which is why I started the studio.

Logistically, how do you handle the donations? Does it all go to the teacher, or does a portion go to the studio? If it all goes to the teacher, how does the studio make enough to maintain the space (rent, etc.)?

Also - does anyone know any teachers who would be interested in teaching a donation based class in san jose?

Thanks much!

I wonder if any of you have any other ideas on reasons for the not-so-uncommon resistance people have to such a conception, even here, in San Francisco.

Cat referred to this as a 'movement', this Donation Yoga conception. I suppose all movements encounter resistance. Perhaps it's in fact where they draw their momentum. Foucault, anyone?

On friendster a few years ago -- perhaps still, i wouldn't know -- there was a profile located in Chapel Hill, NC called only 'mob' and it had hundreds of friends, would post last-minute a time and place for everyone to converge, and then, quite out-of-the-blue, there would be a huge mass of people in some completely unexpected place. When I saw the name, actually what I imagined, before I started reading, was this sort of completely spontaneous event/happening, but with people doing yoga. Still, I think this sort of thing would be absolutely fantastic. And it wouldn't involve having a teacher, just people suddenly practicing yoga, a great many of them, in some space in San Francisco.

Anyone else think this sounds like fun?

check out the Yoga Mob Tribe.

from her discussion boards:

"The Concept:

I have been given an amazing 4000 sq foot live/work warehouse space. I want to share this space with the yoga community by offering it to teachers free of charge. Teachers will receive 100% of the donations collected for their classes. I will promote the classes through emails, a website, flyers, etc. This lack of overhead will be passed along to the community in the form of fun/funky/inexpensive instruction. I foresee the donations ranging from $5 to $12 based on ability to pay.

I move into the warehouse on Sept 15. The forming of Yoga Mob will start around the 1st of October.

The Mission & Intention:

- Offer a fun and safe space to practice yoga
- Maintain the integrity and unity of Yoga as a mind/body/spirit practice
- Offer inexpensive classes to those who wish to practice with a group
- Meet new people and form a community around the practice

That’s the shape of it so far. I envision this to be an egalitarian collective. These are my ideas for the project. This will be a living/changing/organic organization; therefore, everyone who becomes involved will take part in the shaping of the mission, concept, and operations of Yoga Mob. Please post your ideas about this project."
