lesbian bars?

At the moment I'm aware of exactly two primarily women's bars in the city (Lex and Wild Side West)
So, what is the history in SF of lesbian bars?

Was Cafe San Marcos really all-women before the mid-nineties?
How did women's leather culture occur given the male-dominated folsom leather culture?
Was Lion's gay or lesbian or both?

Just curious and, well, I don't run into people at the gay bars to fill in the blanks :)

I remember Cafe San Marcos (now the Cafe) being lesbian in the late 80s. The Lion Pub, if that's what you're referring to, was never lesbian. In fact, they used to have a collectible poster with a lion straddling the back of a naked guy, and licking him with the slogan, "Lions love maneaters".

Lesbian bars I remember were Amelia's, owned by Rikke Streiker on Valencia. When that scene ran its course she flipped the format to what it is today, the Elbo Room.

There was one at the corner of Carl and Cole, but I can't remember the name. Named after a woman, tho. Out on Geary was a bar that was raided by police the night of the White Night Riot. Can't remember its name, either. It was like Geary and 40th or somewhere along in there.

There weren't many places, that's for sure.

I remember hearing that the "keystone" Lesbian bar in SF for many years was called "Maud's".

Ah yes, Maud's. I think it was originally called Maud's Study. It was owned, at least at one point, by Rikki Streiker, who also owned Amelia's and later today's Elbo Room.

Then there was the one that was attacked by the SFPD on the night of the White Night Riots. It was way out on Geary around 40th Avenue or so. I forget the name.
