Sat, July 5, 2008 - 7:07 PMOh and shopping?! Any cool spots for some unique clothes and shoes?

Re: Must-see stuff in SF!
Sat, July 5, 2008 - 8:19 PMI think Raven is planning a list of spots to check out, but I can tell you about a few...
1. the Fleuvog store on Haight Street...you've seen the awesome boots that folks like The Indigo like to rock, right? Well, they've got a store right here in SF...totally drool-worthy!
www.fluevog.com/
Haight Street is really fun to poke on, especially if you've never been. Stores like Crossroads, Held Over, Wasteland, and Buffalo Exchange can all hold some good surprises. And Brain Drops is a cool piercing/tattoo joint on Haight as well with some phenomenal antique jewelry...but it is quite pricey.
2. Five & Diamond, purveyors of awesome gear like those hot holster purses, leather belts with pouches, ruffly pants and skirts, and oh so much more! Don't forget about the super hot jewelry, especially if your ears are stretched! And the store alone is a work of art--definitely a must!
www.fiveanddiamond.com/
...and make sure to prowl around that block on Valencia between 16th and 17th--lots of cute stores like bellydance favorite Multi-Culti--great for cheap shinies...plus the owner is a first-rate ME drummer too. Weston Wear has some cute stuff, especially on their sales racks near the back. Lots of little boutiques to check out. And don't forget about Shoe Biz on Valencia at 20th, I think--right near Club Amnesia, where the Sunday night mini-show will be! Aaaand...Bombay Ice Cream is just a few doors down from 5&D--all kinds of funky-flavored ice creams.
Golden Gate Park is very close to Haight Street, and I recommend the Conservatory of Flowers and the various museums in the park. The park is huge; it's our version of Central Park.
As for good and cheap ethnic food...well, the list is sort of endless. Since I'm across the bay in Oakland I don't often eat in SF, but I'm sure others will chime in with their favorites!
Hope that's a good start :) -

Re: Must-see stuff in SF!
Sat, July 5, 2008 - 8:28 PMyes! holly, we are on the save wavelength.
i will be putting together a 'tribal bellydancer's guide to SF" for all you ladies upon arrival.
In it, will be recommendations of places to eat, shop, see, shop some more, etc.
Holly has nailed some key places that are already on my list! And some of those stores have been gracious enough to give discounts for all SF Mecca Participants, so save your pennies and stock up on tribal wears....
If you want to check places on line, here are some off the cuff healthy yummy eating places i would strongly recommend
1. Cafe Gratitude!!!!!!!!!!!
2. Herbavore
3. Any/all cafes on Valencia Street (the mission district) close to sat. night show locale.
4. Haight Street cafe's: All You knead, Balazo, Pork Store, Cole Street Cafe, etc.
5. Burrito places in the Mission district.
6. Yummy Thai food places on Valencia Street..
7. Middle Eastern food: Kan Zaman on Haight St.
8. Ethiopian food: on Haight Street
9. Baobob of Valencia Street
Holly, feel free to chime in!
SF has incredible eating. I'm a fan of sunday brunch, in particular. Lots of great brunch places and great people watching..
Mizz Rachel Brice told me to tell you guys to go to Dotties for brunch.. but not on sundays. She'll be in Asia over the dates of SF Mecca Immersion, but with us in spirit!
1. cafe gratitude -

Re: Must-see stuff in SF!
Mon, July 7, 2008 - 4:11 PMCan I second and third and forth Cafe Gratitude!?! I absolutely LOVE everything about these cafes. It's the one thing I absolutely have to do whenever I'm in the bay area. I am eternally blessed!- it's their completely vegan coffee milkshake that is to die for! Seriously!!! -

Re: Must-see stuff in SF!
Mon, July 7, 2008 - 5:33 PMThe only thing I dislike about Cafe Gratitude is that they make you order using their terminology. "I am Happy", "I am Free" or whatever. My snark goes into overdrive...I'm like, just give me my live crackers with cashew cheese and we'll leave it at that ;) -

Re: Must-see stuff in SF!
Mon, July 7, 2008 - 5:50 PMIt is a bit corny, but I kind of like it. Maybe I spend too much time with the little kids. =P -

Re: Must-see stuff in SF!
Mon, July 7, 2008 - 10:11 PMOh man...now if I went there with little kids that would be super fun! I'd get into it then :)
Oh, and your post inspired me to look up their menu online...my god I'd never even seen all of the smoothies and shakes! I'll have to swing by there soon and get that chocolate minty one! -

Re: Must-see stuff in SF!
Sat, July 5, 2008 - 8:33 PMThe other 'must see' stuff i would add to the list are:
1. Golden Gate Park!!!
2. Delores Park (closer to dance studio) great views of the city, and great vibe.
3. Golden Gate Bridge/Baker Beach/the presidio..... if you have a vehicle or cab ride
4. The Marina/fisherman's wharf---- much more touristy, but if you have extra time and have never been to SF before, gorgeous views, on the water, alcatrez. etc...
5. Definitely Haight/Ashbury. great shopping. great funky typical SF scene, great food, and borders on Golden Gate park. (and my old neighborhood for 6 years)
6. The Castro!! Walk around the Castro for great shopping and super funky SF extravagence over the top fashion flair
7. Osento women's bathhouse in the mission
8. the ocean..
xo

Re: Must-see stuff in SF!
Sun, July 6, 2008 - 12:33 AMFYI...sadly, Osento *might* be closed by mid-August, so I suggest checking in on the website to make sure it's still open. See the following letter posted on their site for more details...but if it is open, it's a great spot!

Re: Must-see stuff in SF!
Mon, July 7, 2008 - 8:49 AMAnd here are some other restaurant recommendations:
In the mission:
1. Dosa, yummy indian: dosasf.com/
2. Herbivore: yummy veg/vegan: www.herbivorerestaurant.com/
3. Truly Mediterranean for cheap middle eastern street food (falafel, shawerma) on 16th just a few doors from Valencia (ie. around the corner from shopping!)
Also in the Haight in Kan Zaman - yummy middle easter food that not too pricey, tasty hookahs, and bellydancin at night!
Keep your eyes on electricvardo.com for any fun events Amar is involved in - he seems to run with a crew of top notch, friend dancers, and I always love his choice of music.
Also, dholrhythms.com/ is an amazing bhangra collective that also teaches classes and throws parties. If you're not too pooped from everything else, I highly recommend checking them out. Vicki is an amazingly talented lady who is always a delight to watch. (She is definitely hard to keep up with, though!)
And on Sundays, there is free music at Stern Grivem which is easily accessible by public transit: www.sterngrove.org/2008season.html -

Re: Must-see stuff in SF!
Wed, July 9, 2008 - 3:35 PMThanks ladies...now I don't know where to start anymore :)
I am really looking forward to all of this...I already visited Alcatrez and Fisherman's Warf 6 years ago...so maybe I can skip that although I would love to see it again. Yes, I visited SF before I started bellydancing...no idea then that I was in the heart of Tribal-city... :) Didn't see or do much...because of visiting family of my best friend...no free time to hang around and check out the city we would have liked too :)

Re: Must-see stuff in SF!
Sat, July 19, 2008 - 3:15 AMHafta add a new one for sure...Pandora's Trunk! At 544 Haight Street between Fillmore and Steiner. Super awesome local designers--clothes, hair bits, jewelry...I just found it tonight and am excited about it as their stuff was very, very cute! Especially if you're playa-bound...add it to the list!
Check it: www.pandorastrunk.com/ -
-
Re: Must-see stuff in SF!
Sun, July 20, 2008 - 10:44 PMYes, Pandora's Trunk!
I second that one. an artist's collective. we like to support that!
i peeked in the window Fri night after Counterfeit, and it looks super cute!
PLUS, it's home to FatiBeloved's creations, who is also vending at the Mecca Revue.
Her designs are truly unique. Truly groovy. and yes, even truly affordable.
I'm putting together "play lists' for you all..
no no, not for your ipod.
Play Lists, as in List options for your PLAY-time in SF! (in the different neighborhoods). tee hee....
Thank you for this opportunity to get to reconnect to all the things i love most about living & dancin in San Francisco! -

Re: Must-see stuff in SF!
Mon, July 21, 2008 - 7:50 AMI'd also strongly suggest a visit to Piedmont in the Upper Haight (not too far from the beloved Fleuvog shoes!). This store is mainly targeted to drag queens & burningman folks, but there's plenty of fun stuff that anyone can appreciate. They have AMAZING feather hair pieces, a number of chain and coin belts, and glittery hair flowers. Plus a selection of fake eyelashes like you've never seen! The staff is super friendly and most of the clothing is designed and made locally. Definitely a good spot to check out if you're headed up that way... -

Re: Must-see stuff in SF!
