From what I've seen.. whapping yourself in the head is NOT one of the skilled moves that Poi dancers use often. After having mastered it myself, I now understand why it's such a rarely seen move. I would like to learn a new poi move.. this one has already gotten old. And my head hurts. I need those with more skills to help me out here...
Play in the Park - Sunday, Mar 25th. 4 o'clock
Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Preserve area (near the 405 and the 101 fwys)
Bring: poi, hoops, staff, flags... whatever toys you want to teach, learn or practice!
Wanna come play?

Re: Poi me, Baby!
Sun, March 25, 2007 - 11:57 AMI'll tell ya, the best thing to do is start with a beginner class from Firegroove. Hannah and Kamala are great teachers, they'll teach you a bunch of great moves, plus you get to do it with a bunch of other people. you'll be amazed at how much you learn and how quick.
Of course it's not as free as playing in the park... -

Re: Poi me, Baby!
Sun, March 25, 2007 - 12:40 PMThx josh - I have looked at the FireGroove info and am considering them for actually taking lessons. Sundays in the park is not just about teaching / learning poi, hoop, and other fun stuff - it's also a social gathering opportunity. I've x-posted this on a few tribes.
ALL are welcome to come join us.... meet new people... teach or not... learn or not... or just hang out and get some sunshine.
This area of the park is pretty much off the main track so it doesn't get too crowded. See my profile for map.
There is also a flat walking path around the basin lake for birdwatching.
Familes welcome! bring that cute little baby...!

Re: Poi me, Baby!
Fri, June 1, 2007 - 12:04 PMWish I had seen this sooner.
I am also looking for somewhere in the valley to spin poi with some others who maybe know more than I do.
Let me know if you find some folks willing to come out and play together in the valley.
My poi and I are poised and ready for action.
Love,

Re: Poi me, Baby!
Thu, June 7, 2007 - 10:15 PMI beg to differ - you DO have poi! It's just not assembled yet. . .
Take a pair of knee socks, and drop a tennis ball into each sock. Now you have poi.
We should do another poi in the park day soon. -

Re: Poi me, Baby!
Thu, June 7, 2007 - 10:16 PMJust to clarify - sock poi are not for fire. But they ARE fun, and they don't knock teeth out if you hit yourself in the mouth.
