Should Psy Parties Be Profitable?

I've been discussing this with a few folks recently and I'm curious about the larger psy community's opinion. I realize this may be a touchy issue and yet I think we can talk about it like civilized adults.

The question at hand is whether a psy party should make a profit for the promoters or not.

To get the discussion started, I'll offer my opinion. While I can see that having the goal of walking away with a fat bankroll could certainly distort and misguide the intent and outcome of a psy party, I can also see the merits of making some money with these events. The main thing I consider is financial solvency of the crews throwing the events. It seems that unless you have a lot, and I mean a lot, of disposable income to put into the events, it would be hard to stay afloat if you didn't turn some kind of profit. While I can also see that the feeling of throwing a great event has immeasurable worth, I could also see someone wanting to make a bit of money for busting ass to make things happen.

I offer my opinion mostly from the vantage point of attending events for the past 14 years. I'd just like to know some others' thoughts on the matter.

Some further questions for consideration:

If yes to a profit, how much is just ridiculous? What are acceptable means to make a profit?

If you don't think a profit should be made, what suggestions would you have for a crew to stay afloat?

I hope if my post somehow incites you, you will believe me when I say that's not my intention and I just want to get some opinions.

R.I.P. David Ascott

David Ascott passed away last weekend. He was a dear friend to many in this community, and his absence will be truly missed.

From his family:

"A memorial service for David will be held at the St Matthews church. You can go to www.Stmattsaustin.org for a map. The actual cross roads are Mesa and Steck. It is right across the street from Anderson high school. The service will be on Thursday at 7 pm. Our family hopes that all who knew David and would like to join in remembering him can attend. Instead of flowers donations can be made to the church.

To all those who knew, cared for partied with and loved him I hope you keep good memories. You can contact me for information or share a story and i apologize in advance if I do not pick up right away as our whole family is sorting through a lot of emotions.

Location:

Your journey takes place in the land of Spirithaven. This spacious land offers lots of camping space, private/non-private showers, and even some livestock – though they aren’t for sale, nor are they edible. The address is 9706 Anchor Ranch Loop, Flatonia TX 78941.

Food/Water:

The Council of Magickal Arts will be providing full food service with a vegetarian menu. They will also provide drinking water. As of this moment I am waiting on the menu options and costs associated. The menu will be offered from Friday evening through Sunday morning. You are more than welcome to bring your own food & beverages.

Camping:

There's more than enough camping space available. The land is full of old oak and elm trees that provide copious amounts of shade. The Council of Magickal Arts rules over this land and requests that you leave no trace of your existence on their land when you leave. Please pack out what you pack in....that includes your trash. Trash and recycling bins will be on-site, but your personal trash receptacle should be your first choice. Cigarette butts are TO NOT HIT THE GROUND. Please bring a tin, like an Altoids package, to place your butts in or use your back pocket. Show some respect for the land owners, the promoters, yourself and the Earth. Ins and outs will be allowed, but re-entry is solely permitted to those wearing wrist bands provided at the gate upon paid admittance. No wrist band...no re-entry, no exceptions....no excuses.

Workshops/Vending/Performers:

We are in the process of speaking with a few people to offer some of these services; updates to follow.

Cost:

$25 for both nights
$20 for Saturday night

The gates will open at 6PM Friday night, and close at 3AM Saturday morning. The gates will re-open at noon on Saturday, and close again at 3AM Sunday morning. Arrive early for the best camping spots.

Then actually camping out somewhere an additional night or so since it's about a 17 hour drive to Ashville. Just thought I would throw this out there and see if anyone else is interested in going. Underground Sound 5 - Astral Projection, Dr. Spook (A/V set) - Camp Zoe, MO

Ok, this isn't strictly a psytrance party, its more of an all out rave, but it comes highly recommended. I've been to UGS the past two years in a row, and it is by far one of the best produced parties I've come across. I totally thought that last year would have been the beginning of the end for this festival as there was alot of shit that went down badly(the sound ended up getting shut down by the cops at like 3 in the morning the second night, during the headliner lots of busts, the promoter was arrested for getting noise complaints from over 5 miles away.) That was they decided to switch venues to Camp Zoe.

I've been there twice for hippi / jam band festivals and the place is owned by straight up family, is much larger than the previous venue and will not have any problems with noise complaints. It use to be a church camp thats nestled into the Ozarks and has a beautiful spring fed stream that runs directly through the camp grounds, with several cliffs and caves that can be explored. There are showers, and all the amenities. Also Tom (the main guy behind this party) did a beautiful job with the stage they put on @ this years midwest burn and did a very good job with cleaning up their camp(I was on crew.) There will undoubtedly be many different sound camps(5 total last year) including an all or mostly psy stage, and the sound and lighting / visuals on the mainstage will undoubtedly be top notch. Infact I'm so stoked about this party I'll be coming all the way back from the west coast just to go, before heading back for BM. So I'll go ahead and post some quotes and the mainstage lineup:

James Watts is the mind behind KiloWatts and his many different projects and styles. His work embraces the bulk of electronic genres, including breaks, IDM, techno, and downtempo. His fluency in piano is evident throughout his work, as is his penchant for jazzy riffs, intelligent structure, wistful melodies, and an often cheeky take on the current state and history of electronic music as a whole. His album “Ground State” is out on Native State Records, home to fellow pioneers Bluetech and Shen. It’s a collection of sweaty psychedelic downtempo grooves, churning molasses-thick basslines, and undulating synthetic sonorous mandalas. KiloWatts has albums on Artificial Music Machine that are full of visionary dimensions, fusing together a dexterous knowledge of sound synthesis, deep emotional articulation, and solid melodic intuition. Peppered throughout these monumental statements are releases with class labels such as Harmonious Discord, Thoughtless Music, and his own outlet, KiloWatts Music, that celebrate his adept technical expertise, often bringing a whirlwind of mindblowing digital wizardry in the form of glitches and edits.

He began making music in the early 90s with DOS-based trackers and releasing them on BBSs through the demoscene. He was a driving force in the foundation of Soulseek Records, a netlabel celebrating independent musicians during a time of heavy backlash from the record industry against filesharing. The label helped show that independent electronic musicians can use file sharing to their advantage by promoting and collaborating with each other. The label was born among a flurry of netlabels, many which still exist today.

An ever-growing list of projects and collaborations exists. Skeetaz, with breakbeat cohort Bil Bless brings hard-hitting digital glitched-out psychedelic funk. His collaboration with singer Peter Van Ewijk is a mystical ride with vocals and guitar, nested atop edgy electronica. With Tanner Ross, an eerie style of dark techno is born under the name Voodeux for Dirtybird’s techno sublabel Mothership. Fellow Philadelphian MC Amagine delivers consciousness-driven motifs in their digital glitch-hop project called Super Galactic Expansive.

I havent posted on here in quite some time, but I thought I would share this mix with you guys. Ive been dabbling with the ambient/downtempo sound for quite a few years now and havent really ever released any chill mixes. So here is the first, Exploring Innerspace, an ambient journey. Clocking in at just around an hour its a mixture of old and new ambient/chill tracks spanning a 10 year period. For people who are used to my Dubstep mixes this really isnt anything like what I normally play so dont be too surprised. Open your ears, open your mind, sit back and relax.

Mano is a project by Zoltan Farkas, also known as 1rgum 3urgum. The project was designed as a solo project of Zoltan; whereas Irgum Burgum was a collaboration of Psybaba records owner DJ Jirzij. The project combines multiple genres of sounds and innovative ideas. Mano is a musical experiment from the labs of Hungary, with its exclusive and modern views on the world of electronic music. It combines multiple elements of techno, electro, dark vibes and light atmospheric sounds, as well as minimalism and of course full power psychedlia. The project was previously totally unreleased, and now the times are finally for Mano! Get ready, buckle up and expect a super pleasant psy-trance journey!

Biosynthesis it's a brand new, exclusive project formed together by two close friends: Gorump Peyya and Dj Dantrex. The project was formed in the beginning of 2009. Biosynthesis was created with only one goal and idea: to make magical psychedelic sounds full of forestall and organic vibes with all of the surrounding elements, which are perfect for festivity and dance ritual - party! The project has been previously not released on any other labels.
The first part of the duo is Metodi Kocev a.k.a. Gorump Peyya from Macedonia. He already released numerous albums and single tracks on compilations and labels such as: Mighty Quinn Rec, Evil Knivel Rec, Tantrumm Rec, Manic Dragon and more.

DIRECTIONS

From Dallas, head east on I-30 to Mount Pleasant. (About 115 miles depending where you are coming from).

Exit #160 to Highway 271/highway 49 and turn right. Watch your signs through Mount Pleasant and stay on 49.

Continue on Highway 49 approximately 17 miles to Daingerfield. Watch your signs through town and stay on 49. Continue on Highway 49 approximately 8 miles until you are just past Hughes Springs.

(There is a 4-Way stop at the intersection and it is right next to the Wildflower Inn and Cafe. Great place to stop for food. Decent price, large quantity, home made, damn tasty.) Turn right on FM 2612 Loop.

Continue about 0.5 miles. Turn left at the "Love Chapel Cemetary" sign. (The County Roads are not marked very well if at all out there. Just watch for the Love Chapel sign, it's easy to spot.)

Continue about 1 mile. Road will merge with another, stay left. Continue about another 0.5 miles. (You will go past CR 2987 on your right but not as far as the Love Chapel Church on the left.) Gate will be on your left and not easy to see until you are right on it. There is a green "Underground Cable" box very close, watch for it.

People from other locations, use the intersection of Highway 49 and FM 2612 as your way point. It is just south east of Hughes Springs and north west of Avinger. Find your best route to that location.

If you haven't already been here, yall will love this spot!!!!

Hello all these are some friends of mine throwing this party. This will be located in dallas TX. :) This is a multigenre event. Expect lots of old school and new school sounds from breaks,acidhouse,acid techno,,tribal beatz, and the 2nd half of the night will be all PSYCHEDELIC TRANCE...... morningside tribe is an old rave promotor from the 90's.. most of all these dj's booked have been playing music or producing music since the mid to late 90's fyi.....Just a little background for ya! We are an ever growing group of individuals who have connected deeply through our experiences with breath, movement and music. Our intention is to co-create a dance experience with others who have the desire and curiosity to explore this medium of mind-body and space awareness.
Throughout time, humans have gathered and danced in ceremony. We have used dance as a means to get in touch with our inner and outer landscapes and as a tool to conjure light and dark energies. These energies are inherent parts of each of us. "Synergy" will be a supportive environment where we shall examine and express all aspects of ourselves, while remaining mindful to our dynamic and impact in our shared space with others. By building community with one another we create a safe, connective container within which we can develop deeper relationships to authentic self- expression and integral health.

Who wants full moon gatherings?

I would like to start a full moon community in Austin. I think that having a designated 3 day weekend every month where we all get together and camp and listen to delicious music is a most excellent idea, seeing as how I don't get to see some of you as often as I'd like, and the full moon is more than enough excuse for me to throw down in the woods for the weekend.

I'm imagining something with very little or no up front costs, where all the needed equipment and services are donated by the community for the sake of making this happen. This will require help from people so please get in touch with me if you have any specific things you can help with or if you can just donate your time to help.

Our friends at the Hundred Acre Woods need help improving their land, and we can help. If we were to gather out there from friday - sunday, daytime saturday would be spent helping with various projects around the property. Some examples of work that needs to be done out there is gardening, stomping mud in to clay bricks, picking up rocks out of the fields, etc. Nothing like a little hard work in the dirt to make you feel at one with nature! This work on the land would help us with the cost of the venue, meaning it would be helping us keep our gatherings very low budget, while helping them improve their land.

Musically I want it to be very open. There are plenty of friends around town that play/make amazing music so I'm pretty sure everything can be easily taken care of in that department. I really want the whole thing to be very open to whatever people want to make it. If someone is interested in leading yoga or meditation, fire spinning/hooping workshops, serving food and beverages, anything anyone would want to do to help make the gathering better would be welcome. Like I said I really just want this to be a monthly excuse for us to all get together and camp out and listen to music.

I think if we can get on the ball with this, theres no reason it can't happen by the may 9th full moon (weekend of the 8th-10th) so uh, lets get on it!

Event Ideas and Discussion Thread

So as not to further muddy other threads meant to promote, let's use this thread to discuss all our thoughts and ideas for events, things we'd like to see happen within the scene and so on. Just to save everyone from having to say it over and over: No one is trying to offend anyone else or tell anyone how to do anything, just trying to share ideas. Constructive criticism on past events is more than welcome. After all, we have to be aware of our past mistakes to learn from them.

So here's something I've been thinking about for the last year, and I'd like to try to make it happen. Anyone who is on board for helping this idea come to fruition is welcome to help. I want an event thrown by the community, for the community. This means input and help from as many of us as possible. I know if everyone contributes by bringing whatever they can to the table, we can have an awesome intentional gathering that is a fun and meaningful experience for everyone, for the least cost and providing a magical setting for each person to have their experience in, together. I want to bring some people from the Atlanta Psy scene out here to play for us. They have their own style out there and it's some of the darkest, nastiest psytrance I've heard and I've wanted Texas to experience that since I first heard them. Not only that but they are friends and would come for relatively low cost. I want the event to be outdoors, and 3 days long. I want to get my friend Bedouin and his hyperdrive xlr8r crew out here to build a ritual dance fire in the middle of the dance floor for us to dance around all night. Because regardless of if you believe that they are opening portals or communicating with aliens through the fire, dancing to psytrance around a huge fire is just plain fun and awesome. This is the foundation of my vision, and it seems there are many of us who would like to see this kind of thing happen, so let's do it! Spring, and the time to take it back out doors, isn't far off.

Full Circle and The Phoenix Family is association with Straylight Productions and Xcience bring you Gemini 2009. Over the years Gemini has secured itself as the longest running yearly psy trance festival on the west coast, and has built the reputation as one of the best vibed and premiere events of its kind in North America. This year will be no different, though it will experience some organizational differences as its father and our dear friend Wichdokta takes the year off to bring another Gemini into this world. Rest assured though, this years gathering will maintain the exceptional standard of music, deco and most importantly vibe and intention. As it is this, this intention, this gift of this free event to the trance community, and bringing together of talent and tribes that truly makes this event the special one it is.

On the weekend of June 12th, we invite you to come and partake with us in Belden CA. The venue is a literal town and is perhaps the most comfortable and beautiful venue in the states. Situated on the Feather river, the location includes a country market, a full service restaurant, a full bar, cabins, a riverside beach, swimming hole, shaded dance floor, plenty of shaded camping and frequently cleaned bathrooms with running water.

Again this is a free gathering and gift to the trance community, we just ask you come, bring your best smile and dance your ass off.

This years lineup will feature some of the best and brightest of the US trance scene as well as 3 international guests. Our international guests will be announced at 1 month intervals, with 1 in Feb, 1, in March and 1 in April.
Much forethought has also been put into what we hope will be a shining example of a balanced and well flowing lineup covering the spectrum from tribal to full-on to deep night time psychedelic.

I threw this together in a hotel room (I have been traveling quite a bit this year) without a proper monitor...so bear with. :)

I assembled this with the thought of taking over from a full-on/full power or harder DJ, and working down to Prog Psy. A morning, or just after morning set, though not really "daybreak" methinks.

The theme for this event is death and creation. They both go hand in hand and the season as well as the fateful date of this gathering epitomize the theme. Come immerse yourself into the environment. You are encouraged to dress up masquerade style, or come as you are.

As 2008 comes to a close and we move forward to 2009 many wish to look on our past year's experiences in retrospect. We will be providing a second altar which will be decorated by our participants with items that represent experiences in their own lives within this last year that they would like to let go of (Please bring only paper - notes, pictures, e.t.c). In the morning hours we will then set the altar ablaze and you can watch as our creation goes up in smoke.

It looks like I'm gonna have to make a trip to the San Anton area to pick up a friend and I'm wandering if you guys know of anywhere I might be able to throw don a set or two or three VIA: House party, After Party, Indoor party, Club, Gathering etc... They are all the same to me.

I already have to make the trip so it would be for the free ! Donations Welcomed to help with gas expenses.
If i have to make the trip anyway, I mise as well be promoting at the same time.
I will be taking I-10 from Bataan Rouge over. All the way to San Anton.
I'm willing to set up and play on the way there and on way back as well. ROAD TRIP! YEAH!

I will bring my decks with me as well as some other equipment I may need to setup. So don't worry about the sound to much. Unless you already have some set Up. The only thing I'm lacking at this point is the SUBS!

This will be a two part celebration! Be sure to head out early for the park festivities, and stay late for the after party.

DAY PARTY
Zilker Metropolitan Park: 2100 Barton Springs Road Austin, TX 78704

Polo Tables: Like last year, we will be located at the POLO Tables. Located in the southwest area of the park near the restrooms, 3 rows of tables with seating capacity of 150, restrooms near by, water fountain and water available, electricity is available, area is lighted. Listen for the tunes!

Music from 2pm-9pm.
Details on line up will be announced closer to the event.
Sound provided by Continuum Sound.

Food:
As always, we provide a vegan friendly menu for the duration of the days activities. We encourage all participants to bring veggie friendly treats for all to share and enjoy. Items such as juice, snack foods, cups, plates, and sporks, are always needed. To reduce waste: please bring reusable plates, utensils, water receptacles, and containers along with you.

Zilker does not allow public display of alcohol consumption nor do they allow glass containers. If you plan on drinking, do it responsibly and respect the park rules. Please contact us for any questions about items needed for the event or questions about the park alcohol policy.

Activities:
Zilker is known for it's awesome attractions! If the music and food are not enough, Zilker offers train rides on the Zephyr, canoe/kayak rentals, hike and bike trails, and if you get really adventurous.... the Barton Springs Pool is open all year round with an average temperature of 68 degrees! I Am Moving To Houston!

Just a heads up to everyone-I am moving to the Katy/Houston area, along with my GF, in mid December.

It was a difficult decision to make, but after careful consideration it is in our best interest.

I am deeply grateful to the Austin psytrance community and the great times I've had and friends I've made-you are all amazing!

I will still probably make it in to the Austin area for a few events, but won't be living in Austin.

Houston people-keep me in the loop on what's going on in the 713-even if it's not psytrance-maybe we can hang out. Annie this means you!

Névé refers to a layer of snow that has been partially melted and then refrozen primarily at the accumulation area of a glacier, snow that is not yet ice, but is consolidated and granular. Eventually this snow will be compacted into ice, and become part of the glacier. Although névé is dense, settled snow, and may have layers of ice embedded within it, it is still permeable.

Nivation is the process of alternative freeze and thaw by which fallen snow gets converted into mass of ice.

As we go through our daily lives in an attempt to exert positive forces on the world around us, it is nice to be reminded occasionally of the summation and influence of our actions.

All of our individual efforts eventually combine into a force that is capable of changing and shaping the world around us.

Let us take this time to reflect on everything we have learned this summer season and use those experiences to strengthen and brighten our community.

Nocturing minds brings you 0ctober 31st <full circle> full weekend campout

Location is at the Bar H ranch in Saint Jo Texas. This is about an hour north of Fort Worth. About 4 hours from Austin.

Cover is $10 and all money will go to the ranch as a fundraiser for them.

This place is such an amazing place. Home of such shindigs as da la paz festivals(all three of them),southern jucktion,plus many mountain bike festivals...

There will be djs,bands,live interactive art plus many more things to make you go hmmmm.....
This is a multigenre event so expect to hear Psychedelic Trance,Trance,Breaks,Dub,Downtempo,House,Dubstep and etc etc........

Costumes are HIGHLY encouraged!!!!!!

Located in Fayette County, between Smithville and Flatonia. About 1/3 of the way onto the land, there is a creek that completely crosses the property. A low-water bridge is in place for crossing that creek. Along the creek bed is a beautiful wooded area, with lots of old oak and elm trees. The main camping area is open and flat, but currently overgrown with mesquite trees. There is a line of trees that completely surrounds the property, providing privacy and wind and noise barriers. Featuring indoor/outdoor showers, power, etc.

Full festival passes will be available for pre-sale purchase through paypal shortly.

Full festival pass which includes admission and camping for all 3 days will be: $40 before August 21st.
$45 from August 21st to day of show.
and $50 at the gate.

We will provide plenty of plates, plastic-ware, napkins, and we are also bringing out a grill(foil will be available for those who are vegetarian and wish to grill). This gathering is BYODrinks. We will have some cups on hand for those who might need them.

The Trancer's Guide project has been stopped
After five editions of our magazine we have decided to stop the project. This means that there will be no Trancer's Guide 2009. The reason for this action is the difficult economic situation of the trance scene which makes it difficult to finance the project.
It was great fun to work on the Trancer's Guide for all this time and we'd like to thank all contributors and readers for the great work and appreciation.

Any recommendations for getting rid of ground loop hum?

Some of the wiring just got fixed in my apartment building and now I'm getting the worst ground loop hum ever when I hook my laptop into my amp. I've already tried plugging both the laptop and amp into the same outlet and it only slightly diminished it. Of course running off the battery eliminates it , but I want a better option than that. I don't want to sweat if my battery will last when I'm playing gigs. Any suggestions? Do ground loop isolators take diminish signal quality or signal power?
