if you've got knee problems...

Ride your bike! Ok, well, maybe it only worked for me, but try it and see...

I tweaked my knee, from backbends, splits, who knows, but I took a week off from dancing and decided to ditch the car for a while. Started riding my bike and my knee feels so much better, yay!

The pain is in the front, the patella/knee cap which is a good thing because it just means it got popped out of place or a bone chip or something- no ligament tear.

If you've got knee issues try these:

Riding a bike
Swimming (really good 4 yer knees)
No cute shoes 4 a while only tenni's ;(
Keep calves, thighs, butt strong (will be sharing some good stregtheners in floorwork workshop, yay!)

Injured knee dancers, share your tidbits, would be great to know what works for you...

Oooo - lemme add one straight from St. Francis Sport's Clinic book.

If you've really trashed it, sit with your leg extended straight out in front of you, contract the blazes out of the quads, hold, hold, hold, at least 30 secs maximum you can do, repeat at least 10 times. You should do this hard enough to sweat. If you have trouble accessing a strong contraction this can be done sitting on floor with legs straight and a cushion (or something) right under the knee and push the knee down into this.

Oh Crap! I remember this one, (flashback) While recovering from surgery I would lay in bed and do this throughout the day ...I couldn't wait to walk again.

They're called quad sets, and are meant to build up the quads in order to protect the knee. It's an isometric exercise, and if you want to do it dynamically, do knee extensions, either with weights (5-7 lbs.) or against resistance, as on one of those machine thingys at the gym.

          Jen, I'd love your input.

Seems many years ago, like 15 or so, the PT's recommended the knee extensions with weight a lot; then about 5 or so ago they were telling everyone to throw out those machines and substitute other exercises because they were more harmful then help.

I'm guessing it's one of those your mileage may vary things?

ICK!!! DID that with bilateral knee injuries years ago! I was in braces (on and off) for YEARS!

What I do now...Other than the above mentioned things is:

I use Hypaflex tape and stroger tape. Hypaflex tape: I lay my leg out flat tape from the outside...Grab the inside with a flat hand and pull up slightly (toward the ceiling). I tape the knee from outside of knee across knee cap (about 1/4 of an inch below the outside top of the cap) and to the inside of the leg down and release. Repeat on other leg (if needed). Then, do the same with the heavier tape.

I learned this from sports physical therapy...After years of braces that were awkward, painful, and H-O-T. Taping gave me IMMEDIATE relief!!! No kidding! I haven't used my braces in a couple of years now. Hope this helps SOMEone out there!!!

Hey, any remmedies for a pulled muscle in the hip? Yes this is true. I first did it about 3 years ago. I went to the doctor and he told me there was nothing to be done but to ice it then apply a heating pad. It took three months to heal!

And now it has happened again- about 4 weeks ago. It doesn't hurt while I'm dancing, (of course not with all the adrenaline flowing), oh but the next couple of days I feel it with every step I take. Yes, I'm a bad patient and don't follow doctors orders to take it easy until fully recovered. But has this happened to any else?

    walking with limp,
    Roya

i somehow injured my knee wearing cute shoes!!! when i went to physical therapy they had me ride the stationary bike! So when i get that weird feeling in my knee i try to move my leg as if i were riding a bike, since i dont have a bike nor a stationary bike i have to improvise! ill have to try the tighting the quads as well.

Ah, Roya, you've hit me in the soap box. I've been actively dealing with (or trying to) for well over a year now. At this point I believe part of the problem is that there is so much located around and between the hips it's really hard to find the problem and the wrong advice can set you back and cause injury to other parts by compensation.

I had the same situation of "oh it's better" "oh it's back". Been told to lay off, work it harder, it's arthritis, it's not arthritis, it's atrophy, it's spasming musculature, take cortizone into the hip, whatever you do don't use cortizone, this movement is bad, this movement is good, use heat, use ice .... you get the picture.

I finally went to a chiropractor recommended by a dance instructor and we are making progress but the wonderful thing is he immediately found my hot spots - I didn't have to try to stear him at all. He works with a LOT of dancers and particularly belly dancers so he knows what we do.

I will be glad to give you his name via private e-mail.
