It's going to be amazing! <br/> <br/>This year's theme, "decolonizing creativity: FIERY WOMYN, FIERCE EXPRESSIONS," explores the theme of creativity by focusing on art as an expression of a woman's life and identity. We hope to inspire and highlight the work of women of color who share their personal, political and professional voices through the arts. These women continuously put their effort towards building a world in which their work is foregrounded and esteemed. <br/> <br/>The main conference event will take place on Saturday March 8th, beginning at 9:30 AM and running through 5:30 PM, and will include a panel of acclaimed Bay Area activists and leaders in community art and women's issues, vendors, cultural performances, workshops on a variety of creativity and art-related topics. The keynote speaker will be Climbing PoeTree, the tag-team, two-spirited, boundary-breaking artistic duo, Alixa and Naima. Ok, well, maybe it only worked for me, but try it and see... <br/> <br/>I tweaked my knee, from backbends, splits, who knows, but I took a week off from dancing and decided to ditch the car for a while. I'm studying here in Sao Paulo at Lulu Sabongi's school which has a cafe attached to it, Khan el Khalil. One of the girls mentioned that it was a very respectful place to dance because the clients are presented with a history of the dance upon entering. She mentioned that one of her pet peeves was people trying to tip her and how horrible that made her feel and that it relates back to the prostitute/dancer dichotomy. So, then I asked about what she prefers and she told me that requires payment from restaurants and won't dance for tips/meals like i've seen happen in the bay area...she believes that that helps to elevate dancers by having people pay for the culture and not simply making the dance feel like a way of selling your sexuality. which i must admit, can sometimes feel weird--i mean, what happens when you tell people you dance? do you say you belly dance and see that weird look in their eyes? do you say you dance raks sharki? just musing and wondering what you all think...</div> <div> posted in <a href="http://tribes.tribe.net/shabnam">Shabnam says thanks!</a> - 5 replies </div>

<div>Finally got to take a workshop with Raqia Hassan. Missed her the last time she was around -think it was LA a few years back. Had a great time. She did some breakdown of movements, but toward to end was more the 'follow the bouncing butt' old school style. Drove me crazy when she kept doing directional changes. Nevertheless a great experience, and really enjoyed watching her dance the choreography. Beeeuuutiful. Hope she comes back soon. Yes, this is golden. Don't let your placing in contests define you. Ultimately the audience knows. If you get props (compliments) from people in the audience (complete strangers A+ !) then that is what you should listen to. <br/> <br/>There have been many times I haven't won (troupe especially) sometimes warranted, sometimes not , all I can say is, if you win the audience and perform your best - you win, regardless if you have an 'award' or not. People talk and if people liked what you did, it will spread like wildfire regardless of your placing. <br/> <br/>So that's my advice. Archaic. a shop selling wines and liquors. <br/> <br/>Well, I do not work in a restaurant and Tribal style dancers perform in restaurants sometimes, so for me to call myself a Cabaret Style dancer, because thats what I was told that I should label myself, is kinda silly. Because I wear sparkly costumes, and smile when I dance does that mean I label myself as a restaurant dancer? lf I was to describe my style it would be modern, urban and with elements of masculinity. Hmm...so from now on I will not be labelling myself as Cabaret. In fact, I hate labels...what to do? <div>One of my students, troupemates and right hand woman is leaving. She will be in Japan and Brazil for a year. She has been with me for 2 years and I remember when she couldn't even shimmy or play a simple triplet on her zills. Now look at her, she has one of the biggest shimmies, and not only play a triplet, but a masmoudi with a roll fill AND dance at the same time. The Middle Eastern's (men especially) love her dancing, and when she dances, they all ask if she is from Egypt. She got her first tip the other day, and I was so proud of her. <br/> <br/>Her dedication and generosity is inspiring, and we will miss her dearly. The road trips and competitions were so much fun, especially when her and Mandy get together...oh boy...too much silliness for one car to bear. <br/> <br/>Just wanted to pay homage to a super woman. <div>Usually after I dance, as soon as I get home I hang/lay it in a clean dry place with lots of ventilation, near a window usually. I air dry it for a few days. I then inspect it for any stains. On spandex, you can usually dab them with water and soap to get stains out. Test a little bit first. Bellas are usually colorfast, Topkapi's sometimes aren't... color can rub off when you dance and sweat. The costumes I make are the easiest to clean. I make sure I use colorfast fabric and washable chiffon. The mermaid Turquoise one, I wash all the time. Dip it in some cold water with light soap and voila! clean. L. Roses stuff is very easy to clean too. <br/> <br/>It's also a good idea to confirm with clients what type of surface you will be dancing on. I determine what I wear by the floor surface sometimes. Dancing on a grass - dark velvet. Especially with outdoor weddings/receptions. They usually like you to dance on the grass.
