PVC Adhesive on Billboard Vinyl tips?

topic posted Fri, April 18, 2008 - 1:21 PM by  alabama slamma
We're piecing together our vinyl and have seen pvc adhesive stand the test of time on other structures.
I remember being told some tips to applying it, but can't remember what they were.

Any tips on applying, etc., or insight on what type to use?

Doing it tomorrow!

I don't have any tips or advice, but I'm intrigued by Billboard vinyl. Never heard of it - I always figured it was sturdy paper. I guess this vinyl probably comes in huge rolls? Not too outrageously expensive? Obviously printable. What are you folks building?

Have you tried using a regular electric iron to melt & bond the vinyl?

That's how I have seen it joined together or the edge folded back on it's self for reinforcement

Wouldn't melting it affect the integrity of the material? I can imagine melted holes or at least thinner areas.

PVC cement bonds by "melting" the vinyl as well. Have you tried either one on a small sample?

        Thinner areas?

The vinyl I have used was uniform in it's thickness.

Billboard vinyl, heavy duty, vinyl. Call Clearchannel or a similar outdoor advertising company in your area and asked for used billboards.
The have cost me from $6 in dallas, to $25 in Reno for the 48'x14' pieces. The ones in Reno are much thicker, I'm guessing because there is stronger wind there. You can't beat the price. Make sure to request ones with white backs, some are black. It is very sturdy, blocks almost all light, but very heavy, one piece can be up o 70 lbs. It cuts easily with a knife or some scissors. I've seen them painted on the playa for years with out the paint flaking off like plastic tarps.

Tried the pvc adhesive this weekend to no avail. going to try to find vinyl adhesive, for repairing trucking tarps at Home Depot. Found some online.

Keep us updated, 'Bama. I plan on acquiring some billboard vinyl this year, and would love to lazily benefit from your research.

And Red, I know the stuff starts out as uniformly thick - I meant that I thought using an iron on it might melt holes or create thinner areas. :)

yes, make sure to let us know the results of testing. I've got two billboards sitting in my closet (yes, those fuckers are heavier than i though) that I'm going to make into a dome cover. I was thinking about making 4 or 6 separate sections and using grommets to attach it to my dome then using tape to cover the seams for a [semi] dust free environment but if what you are trying works then I'll probably do that.

            good luck

Good luck with ClearChannel. They are a large corporation and can't be bothered to talk with you unless you are spending money there. I've tried them several times. I've tried to get from them several times. Smaller companies seem the most receptive.

I'm surprised you have to pay for waste vinyl. They have to pay to haul off their waste vinyl and our recycling it is actually saving them money. Now they are charging people who are already saving them money!? That's just wrong.

Clear Chanel was really nice with me. I emailed someone out in California and he put me in touch w/ a guy who manages the Georgia area who said that they should be able to help me out. He mentioned a 'small fee' but I'm sure it's nothing crazy.

I think the idea that they have to pay for people to haul off their waste is wrong. I asked one of the small local companies what they do w/ used billboard vinyl and he said they sell them to a company that then recycles them and distributes them to 3rd world countries to be used for shelter. Since I only needed 1300 sq ft (yeah, i though it was a lot) he didn't charge me, but I would have gladly paid for it since they are able to sell them to other people.

Anyways, don't hate on CC just because they are big. Ask nicely and the worst they can do is say no.

I deal with the clearchannel folks here and they treat me very well. I get them for between 10-30 bucks a piece and it is well worth it. When i do buy them, it's usually a pallet load at a time.BTW, After the 2007 fires here, I got them to donate 50 of them to fire victims for tarps and shades. Many were converted to Bjurts by a friend named Bender.

Say what you want about clearchannel radio... Hate 'em too, but Clearchannel outdoor has been good to me.

Sounds to me like CC offices in different parts of the country have different attitudes. Awesome that CCs in your areas have been nice!

My attempts here didn't go anyway where. You've renewed my faith to try them again in my area.

yeah, i just sent out a mass email to 7 or 8 different outdoor advertising companies around my area and got positive responses from 3 w/in the week.

I'm sure something will come up.

(although there isn't as much demand for burning man shade material here in good ole athens, ga as i'm sure there is on the west coast....one of the few advantages of living in the bible belt i suppose.)

I just finished an 80'x80' 8 panel shade structure from billboards. The vinyl stood up to 40+ MPH winds over the weekend without a single seam splitting. We had to take it down though due to tensioning issues. I used HH-66 Vinyl cement, which you can get from Keyston Brothers for 53 bucks a gallon. Works great, is thin-able with acetone, and is goof recoverable as you can re-activate the glue for up to 24 hours with a heat gun. After that it is set in stone... and flexible. Google keyston to see if they are near you. I tried to buy online but it seems Homeland security does not allow it anymore...

Thanks so much Bad-Dawg!, after failed tests with PVC adhesive and liquid nails, I looked for vinyl cement. Upon your suggestion, I just found HH-66 online for $21.88 a gallon. It says it can't be air shipped, but can be ground shipped. I'm definitely going to try it!

Any tips for how to apply it? Like, do you apply it to both sides, wait, then seal, or just slap it on? Does it come with instructions?

We're making a space shuttle, so hopefully it will fly!

It comes with no directions, but I gleaned mine from a guy that makes folding kayaks...

Clean both surfaces with acetone or MEK(Bad stuff, use the acetone). Then thin the glue about 10% with acetone. apply to both surfaces with a natural bristle paint brush. The little 3" chip brushes work well. Let sit a couple minutes until tacky and press both sides together. apply weight or roll with a linoleum roller. Stuff is fully dry in 5 minutes. If you screw up it's re formable for a little while by hitting it with a heat gun, and after 24 hours its completely and forever permanent... Stuff is water and airtight!

Do not do this when it's cold or high humidity as the moisture screws with the bond, and when cold it takes a long time to dry and does not bond well.

I don't have any pics of the beast Novy, I left my camera at home. You could keep an eye on the village tribe as a bunch of other peeps took lots of pics...

Still waiting for my HH-66. Do you have any experience painting them.
The guys at Purple Turtle said they used spray paint on both sides and it didn't flake off the desert year after year.
I'm just still having to convince some worriers.

I'm glad that you get to be the guinea pig with all this stuff since it looks like I want to do the exact same thing you do.

I've heard that the vinyl can be painted w/out having to worry about any MOOPing. I think that would be tight to have a huge mural painted on the inside of a dome.

We're building a Short Shuttle Spaceship shade structure for Flipside.
We have three weeks to finish. I hope we make it. I will post pictures when we get back. Hopefully it will get put up.
I want it to be able to withstand the desert, but it will probably need adjustments. We had a successful expanded monkey hut last year.
The vinyl rocked, but we didn't have any seams or paint, except one patch of latex that I painted on as a test. I can't scrape it off with a knife.

I know the turtle folks. Best thing is Krylon vinyl or plastic paint.

                  >Best thing is Krylon vinyl or plastic paint.<

Sweet! We're covering a starpod with billboard vinyl this year, and were wondering how to paint the inside black, so we could speckle on some glow-in-the-dark paint to glow like stars in the blacklight.... I shall acquire Krylon! :)

Can't wait to see what happens with Alabama's HH-66.

Did we summarily dismiss the idea of heat-gunning billboard vinyl for adhesion?
