Shakti fusion presents Moria in Ottawa May 3-4 weekend!

We're excited to welcome Moria to the Nation's Capital for a weekend workshop and show, May 3-4!

Moria will be teaching technique and combinations I believe in her infamous 'Bellydance Bootcamp' style. And I tell you, it is one hell of a workshop. I had the good fortune to take a class with her near Toronto last year and she is a fabulous and challenging instructor.

The workshops are four hours each Saturday and Sunday, though we are still hammering out the exact times with the studio, it should be between 12-5ish each day.

Location is 151 Chapel St and we are hosted by both Swing Dynamite and Dancestudios.ca.

The show will also be in a downtown location with a licensed area which we are working on confirming.

Workshop registration $150 both days, $85 one day only, show tickets $20 each.
Space is limited to 30 people. Vending by BDSS and Shakti fusion only.

Featured performers at the moment include Moria Chappell, Shakti fusion bellydance, and our guests Ethereal Tribal (Montreal) and Dollhouse Dance Co (Ottawa).

About Orkideh Serpentina:

Orkideh Serpentina is one half of the dance duo Serpentina, based in NYC. Orkideh and her partner Joanna began dancing together when studying with Sarah Johansson Locke (formerly of Gypsy Caravan, Portland, OR) and Susan Frankovich (Bellyqueen, NYC). They performed with Sarah Johansson Locke's troupe, Alchemy Tribal Collective, and eventually began to perform as a duet. Serpentina continued to develop their own style, fusing their background in traditional bellydance with tribal fusion, Classical Persian and Indian dance styles (bhangra, Bollywood and kathak.) Serpentina performs within the tri-state area including spots in New York City, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, and Northern New Jersey.

During her time in Ottawa, Orkideh will share with us original combinations and technique for floorwork. We are also fortunate to feature her as a performer at Tribal Alchemy.

Tribal Fusion Bellydance Technique - Locks and Isolations - In this workshop participants will learn to focus on developing strong technique for Tribal Fusion Bellydance. Workshop includes yoga inspired warm-up, drilling of locks and isolations and finishes with a few combinations and cool-down.

About Leslie:

Leslie is a performer and instructor based in Ottawa, Ontario. She is the director of Shakti Fusion Bellydance and has performed extensively across North America.

Leslie travels to California several times a year to study with Rachel Brice, Mardi Love, Zoe Jakes, Kami Liddle, Moria, Ariellah, Desert Sin, Unmata, and many others. She has completed Level 1 of Suhaila Salimpour’s format as well as Level 1 of Hadia’s teacher training program. In Ottawa, she continues to study regularly with Denise Enan and Hadia. Leslie is also a certified Hatha yoga instructor.

A Tribal Affair - featuring Kami Liddle!

Hi folks,

I'm pleased to present Ottawa's first all tribal fusion event featuring 'TribalDance SuperStar' Kami Liddle! The lineup for the evening will also feature our friends and guest performers from Montreal, Les Trib'elles and Andrea Fryett, and special performances by Ottawa's own tribe, Shakti fusion bellydance.

We are also thrilled to present a Live PA (electronic music performance of original compositions) and original visual projections by local artist and musician Travino. Tasty treats will be provided by Sixth Sense.

The event takes place on Saturday July 21st, from 7-10pm at the Mercury Lounge, 56 Byward in the Market. Come early to take in the food and music, and spend time connecting with friends before the performances begin. Performances begin at 8pm sharp and include two sets with a short break in between. Everyone is invited to stay and dance after the performances!

Please note - as this event is being held at a lounge, there is some seating and some standing areas. This event is 19+ unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Slow Motion - relax and breathe through the movements with elegance and tribal style! We will work on technique and learn a mini-choreography.

Friday July 13th

American Tribal Style improvisation - Part 2 - slow movements (with a gothic twist for the spirit of Friday the 13th!). Movements will be drilled and the basic concepts of tribal improvisation will be practiced, including how to communicate with the eyes in ATS. Then we will add some gothic character.

Please note: Leslie will be travelling to California to continue her studies in Tribal Fusion bellydance as of August 1st - she is presently the only tribal fusion instructor in the Region. Locks, Isolations, Conditioning and Drills - Sunday, June 24, 1-4pm
This is a 3 hour workshop devoted to conditioning, strengthening, and drilling. These handy drills will strengthen your practice and help you develop the strong locks and isolations that make tribal fusion such a unique dance form. Great for any level of dancer including beginners to tribal fusion.

Drills and Combinations - Sunday July 15, 1-4pm
This is a 3 hour workshop that follows up on the June 24th workshop by adding layers and combinations. This is a great alternative for those unable to attend Kami Liddle's (sold out) workshop and will offer a taste of the technique that Kami will be offering July 21-22.

Kami Liddle in Ottawa July 21-22nd!

Hi folks,

I'm pleased (and excited!) to announce that I will be hosting Kami Liddle of the BellyDanceSuperStars Tribal Contingent for a 2 day workshop, the first of it's kind, in Ottawa.

The workshops take place Saturday July 21st and Sunday July 22nd at a downtown studio that will be confirmed within the next few days. Each workshop is 4 hours in length and Kami will be teaching Layering Tribal Fusion Movements with Control and Precision and Funky Combos. The workshops take place between 12-4pm both days.

We are also fortunate to have Kami performing an evening show! The show will take place at the Mercury Lounge and feature music, hors d'ouevres and a few invited performers. Tickets for the show are $15 advance and $20 the week of.

Workshop registration is $150 for both days or $85 for one day. Please note that preference will be given to those registering for both days as we have a limited amount of space. Registration is now open and
is already filling up rapidly - Kami is in demand as an instructor these days and this workshop will sell out - if you would like to register it is best to reserve your spot now.

Although I knew of Kami Liddle through the Tribal community, the first time I heard about her as an instructor was at a hot spring in the middle of Nevada, where we ran into some of Kami's students from Reno in spring 2004. The woman I met told me about taking classes from Kami and that she was an excellent teacher and recommended I seek her out if I was passing through Reno. I was fortunate to take a workshop with Kami in Syracuse last summer, and enjoyed it immensely!

Kami Liddle performed as a Tribal Fusion soloist for years before being invited to perform with the tribal contingent of the BellydanceSuperstars show. A graduate of Fine Art program at the University of Nevade in Reno, she is a well known teacher and performer in the international tribal community. I just wanted to share a heartfelt thanks to all of you for organizing such great events!

Vera, thank you for inviting me to dance at your show, I enjoyed watching the diverse choreographies performed by your students and especially loved your Mohammed Ali Street! It was a pleasure meeting everyone and devouring those delicious truffles ;)

Tom and Tracey, thanks for hosting yet another smashing end of year party, I am not sure who brought the stage decorations but it was such a nice touch! Thank you for including our performances at the last minute, we all really enjoyed dancing at the show and can't wait till the next one!

Denise and Ahmed, thanks for including some tribal performances at the Oasis Hafla, I had such a great time seeing you both again and catching up with old friends. It was a great way to start the holidays, taking in so many beautiful performances!

And to Niki, Liz and Stella, thanks guys for all your hard work and for sharing your love of tribal with me! You all looked beautiful on stage and I'm looking forward to more projects in the new year!

Tribal Fusion Workshop November 18th - Toronto

After spending the last three months in San Francisco taking workshops with Rachel Brice and Jill Parker, (as well as completing my Hatha Yoga teacher training!) I'm pleased to announce that I'll be teaching a Tribal workshop in Toronto on Saturday November 18th from 2-5pm!

We will start with a yoga influenced warmup, then we will drill technique including isolations and technique for arms, and finish with a short tribal fusion choreography. Registration is limited to a small group.

Tribal Workshop November 26th!

Hi all!

I'm pleased to announce my return next month and I bring with me knowledge accumulated during my studies in San Francisco to share with you :)

I'll be teaching a workshop on Sunday November 26th from 2-5 pm (although it may start a bit earlier depending on the studio schedule).

Adventures in the West!

Hi all,

It's been a long few months! Much has happened on my journeys, almost too much to really summarize here. I've done my best to stay *off* the computer for the most part, so haven't really been posting here either....but thought I should post something before I disappear for the next 28 days!

I arrived at burning man August 21st and spent a glorious 18 days baking in the sun to the sight and sound of fire and festival. This year's notable BM accomplishment was surviving the bug that went around......they thought it was food poisoning at first....but actually it was a virulent flu bug. I was sick for about 12 hours and recovering for another 20 or so. bla!

I worked with Cafe Village, helping to set up and build the Cafe, then enjoyed a week with DISORI6NT, listening to great music and travelling around the playa.

Notable art for this year:
The Waffle aka Uchronia......best to just google that one.
Flaming Lotus Girls Serpent Mother.
and....
I got to watch them trebuchet a flaming piano. That was Rad!

After the festival I stayed for some cleanup, picking up the tiniest of feathers and sequins from the playa.
Then, I went to Pacifica where it is foggy and got most of the dust out of everything. Except you never really get the dust out of everything.

I've spent some time since between Venice and SF and had the great fortune to take a workshop with Rachel Brice, learning a new choreography and some new movement! Then, I caught her performance at Amira, which sadly closes this week after many years serving up great dinner and dancers.

Thursday, I attended Electric Vardo, a show featuring Frederique (whose slow movement I must say is phenomenal!), Mira Betz, Elizabeth Strong and Freyja. Soozhyq was the featured musician, playing the doumbek in accompaniment.

Yesterday, I arrived at Sivananda Yoga Ashram in Grass Valley and will be here till October 28th - I probably won't have much access to internet as the schedule goes from 5:30am-10pm! Yes for real, I am getting up that early.

I'm not sure yet what my return date is but will post as soon as classes are to resume and we can all go out for dinner :)

How Not to Get Dizzy - a workshop :)

I'm pleased to present the first of my summer workshops, How Not to Get Dizzy (or Spinning with Grace), on Sunday, July 29th in Ottawa.

Given the content of the workshop, space is limited! This is a two hour workshop that covers the following:
-getting grounded and breathing through the spin
-endless cycles - how to stop gracefully!
-slow and fast style turns
-spotting!

and other related spinning related issues.

Off to Montreal!

This weekend, I'll be off to the beautiful city of Montreal, to visit Hadia and Soraya, take in the African music festival (I think that's what it's called!) and finally to do some pre-burn shopping for playa gear! I *must* have a furry warm coat, and some flat soled, comfortable boots! If anyone in the area would like to meet along the way...please do let me know!

Trippin' in Toronto!

So I'm back home now, all rested from the trip, more or less.
I had a blast!

Thanks again to *serious* for hosting me in the palace of FluffyEvil, I am ever grateful especially considering how late I got in on Tuesday!

While in Toronto, I discovered that there is Women's Spa called Body Blitz, where for the low low price of $45 (or $35 on Tuesdays!), you can go and soak in a warm salt pool, aromatherapy sauna, infrared sauna, and hot green tea pool!!! Once I got there, I honestly didn't want to leave! It's a very chill space and quite posh for what they are charging. Treatments are extra.

After the spa, I got ready for the show which was held at the Savannah Room, a cabaret style space. Audra and Rosanna did a great job of organizing and many thanks to them both for getting the event rolling and for having the foresight to include the second show! The best part about the show was that although many of us performing are inspired by the same instructors, the artistic touch of each dancer was completely unique. Also, It's been a while since I've heard such a wide array of interesting music, and seen so many beautiful and unique handmade costumes in one show! The show had a lot of variety and was really a pleasure to watch!

The next afternoon, I had the pleasure to hang with Shan who I haven't chilled with since October in Fredericton and man am I glad she's relocated so much closer (ok well actually I think Fred and Kitch are about equidistant from Ottawa but whatever). We explored Queen street and Kensington market, to the chagrain of my wallet.

Thursday evening, I got to play door girl for a weekly d&b and house music event taking place at Escape on 22 Duncan. I can't remember all the dj's but I know that Marcus and Lush gave me hella reason to practice all those locks and isolations that Suhaila and Rachel taught. It was a really fun night and I hope the event goes off again next week!
