hi all
just looking foor some advice on shimmies.Do you guys do Suhaila style glute shimmies or just regular ol' shimmies with your kness and hips. It confusing because some people teach the glute variety, whereas other instructers do the other kind. Is anyone else confused by this?Is it possible to alternate between styles, or should you pick one and stick with it.? I'm confused

Re: shimmy help
Thu, July 31, 2008 - 3:11 PMI alternate between techniques. I've cross-trained in a lot of dances & I figured out 2 skelotal & 3 muscular groups to either isolate or use combine in any way, to do shimmies, As long as you're not hurting yourself, there is not just 1 right way to do shimmies.

Re: shimmy help
Fri, August 1, 2008 - 3:58 AMWell, i do the knee-shimmy when walking etc...but when I just stand at one point, I do the glute-shimmy...it feels kinda better and easier for me to combine it with other stuff like bellyrolls, chest lifts... -

Re: shimmy help
Fri, August 1, 2008 - 4:52 AMI do this too, except sometimes I use my obliques to do shimmies while standing still if I'm not doing a bunch of different things on top of it (like belly rolls, etc). I haven't gotten good enough for that yet hehe :) -

Re: shimmy help
Wed, August 6, 2008 - 4:39 AMHmm. In Sharon's DVD, she mentions using the obliques and glutes to do shimmies which make the belly button move, but I don't really get what she meant? -

Re: shimmy help
Wed, August 6, 2008 - 8:50 AMI interpret it as first you get a nice glute based shimmy going, then you have the obliques come into play. I think of it as transferring some of the energy from the glues into the obliques, allowing them to help. When you start using both sets of muscles you produce a shimmy that's so big and "floppy" (to use her term) that you can see your belly button waggle back and forth.

Re: shimmy help
Fri, August 1, 2008 - 8:04 PMhmmm, our first two lessons were bent leg and straight leg. Bent leg is dropping first one knee and then the other. Very important to keep your hips tucked! and not sink into your 'waist'. I find straight leg mostly driven by the large quads, one leg does it better than the other and go one leg at a time. The leg you are working also holds your weight while the free leg is just for balance. Ansuya has a cd with something or another called 'electric cobra' or 'sizzling cobra,' I think, that's really awesome. Good luck! B <>< -

Re: shimmy help
Sun, August 3, 2008 - 12:16 PMfrom what i know..
oblique shimmy - std American in origination
knee shimmy - Egyptian in origination
glute shimmy - ala Suhaila
inner thigh/pelvic floor - American variant of Egyptian - trying to protect knees perhaps?
know'em all - drill'em all ...on one leg...then the other... both legs... flat footed ....
on the balls...walking and not... on your head... in a boat ... play with it!
don't hurt yourself... they all come in handy.. and i am sure there are more variations out there...
