Weekly Bluegrass Jam in Santa Fe!!

BLUEGRASS JAM SESSION AT THE COWGIRL BBQ EVERY SATURDAY IN DECEMBER!!!

Come on out to a weekly bluegrass jam session hosted by Sharon Gilchrist (singer, songwriter, mandolin and bass) at the Cowgirl BBQ every Saturday afternoon from 1-4pm for the month of December. The jam sessions will be co-hosted by Josh Martin (singer, songwriter, guitar, mandolin, dobro, bass and more!). In past years, you may have heard Sharon and Josh play together in the Santa Fe based bluegrass trio, Mary & Mars.

We hope to create a casual and comfortable environment where players of every level can come together to interact and exchange musical experience and knowledge. The jam will be beginner friendly as well as pro friendly. We are hoping that seasoned players will come out and join in to help pass down the sound and feel of traditional bluegrass to those new to the genre or their instruments. Tunes will be played at a wide variety of tempos in order to accommodate all levels present. The floor will be open to questions about tunes or jamming. If you are so inclined, bring chord charts or recordings of the songs you'd like to play so others can join in easily or take the materials home to learn for the next week. This is an old-fashioned jam session – sitting in a circle and playing completely acoustic. So, come on out and help us keep the aural tradition of bluegrass music alive – whether you are a player or a listener. It takes both sides to keep the music going.

The Cowgirl BBQ is the perfect place to host this bluegrass jam. They have the potluck perfect jam session menu. There is a playground out back for people with children. There is no cover charge – that's right folks, it's FREE! Come early and have lunch or stay late and enjoy dinner. Let's support the Cowgirl BBQ in its effort to support the local bluegrass community and to sustain this rich American roots music tradition. Y'all come!
MANDOLIN WORKSHOP WITH SHARON GILCHRIST

MANDOLIN WORKSHOP WITH SHARON GILCHRIST

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 2, 1 – 4PM
at GIG PERFORMANCE SPACE

Tickets are $50 in advance; $55 at the door

Reserve your spot now! Advance tickets can be purchased at High Desert Guitars:
111 N. Guadalupe St., Santa Fe, NM 87501; 505-983-8922

Sharon Gilchrist is a known for her fluid and unique mandolin style. Her early influences are bluegrass and church music. Her interests eventually explored other styles such as jazz, classical, rock, swing and various forms of world music. She has since developed a musical style that is steeped in the rugged and driving feel of bluegrass and yet encompasses harmonies and spacious rhythmic structures from other genres of music. It is this unique blend of styles that found Sharon spending the last three years touring with the Peter Rowan and Tony Rice Quartet. This is a group that incorporates elements of jazz and free improvisation into the traditional bluegrass format. Sharon has also toured with the band Uncle Earl and with the Santa Fe bluegrass trio called Mary & Mars. She earned a Bachelor's Degree in Mandolin Performance from Belmont University. She also teaches mandolin privately and at the College of Santa Fe.

This mandolin workshop will be the first in series of workshops to come. The focus of the series is exploring both the traditional bluegrass and new acoustic music repertoire as well as learning the basics of improvisation. Each workshop will include learning tunes and will explore ways of developing solos. The basic territory of the fret board will be discovered through scales, arpeggios, double stops and the basics of music harmony. The overall idea is to create your own improvisational style through building a vocabulary by learning tunes, solos and sounds of other musicians as well as music harmony and fret board knowledge. Bring any recording devices you like. Tablature and standard notation will be available.

This workshop is in part sponsored by High Desert Guitars.

There will be instruments on display to be raffled off by ZoukFest (www.zoukfest.com).

Thanks to Lisa S for posting this on the HBR tribe:

To celebrate his birthday and the birth of some great new song material,
our own Erik Yates will be heading up his first ever solo show at
Berkeley's Ashkenaz Community Center on Thursday, September 6th.

Erik will be showcasing both his acoustic and electric personalities, performing a
combination of his newer material with some HBR favorites. He'll be doing
an intimate unplugged set with the talented singer & mandolinist Sharon
Gilchrist (Rowan/Rice Quartet), showcasing songs the two of them have
worked on over the past year. Then, with the help of bandmates Bryan Horne
(bass) and Aaron Redner (fiddle), as well as musical conspirators Julian
Fritz (drums) and Asher Fulero (keyboards), he'll be showcasing a body of
"Americana Soul" material that combines his powerful vocals and lyrics with
two of his all-time favorite instruments: the Hammond organ and the
5-string banjo.

$12 advance tickets will be available soon at www.ashkenaz.com. Check the
site for further details. We'll see you there!

I have been slacking on my moderatorly duties... Anyone check out Sharon's myspace page lately? In the "comments" section, someone has a 12 minute vid clip of PRQ from Old Settlers. Then down below that, the same guy posted a "Vassar tribute jam" with Lonesome Fiddle blues...

Last ever Mary & Mars show - download available

So the big Sassydog had uploaded the very last ever Mary & Mars show. Since he doesn't do LMA or BT, follow instructions below.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I uploaded the last Mary & Mars show, you know Sharon G's old band, to MEDIAFIRE. If you can handle FLAC, then this is for you, if you can't, well then you will have to wait for someone else to put it in another form that fits your style.
This show is from July 6, 2004 at 12 Galaxies in San Francisco, and it is a soundboard.
Mediafire limits uploads to 100 mb, so it is in files that are easily put back together to form a 3 cd show. This one has 8 files, and I am still working on the setlist.
Please enjoy, pass it around and support bands that support taping !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Craig
------------------------------
Mary & Mars
12 Galaxies
S.F.C.A.
P1:
http://www.mediafire.com/?f2tjzh4nkkn
P2:
P3:
Then apparently there was problem, so he wrote this:
This is in regards to the Mary & Mars show that I put up on MEDIAFIRE. It came to my attention that there are some issues on CD 1.
I have uploaded a fixed file here for tracks 4,5,6.
Sorry for the trouble......
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Here is the setlist, I don't know if this is from the Joe Baker recording (that I have), but ass-u-me so. I am pretty sure that he was the only one taping. It was right after High Sierra, there were like 20 of us there....

The ???s are my best guess at the names... (If I listened again, I could probably figure out if D3T5 was June Apple or not... Haven't listened to it in years...)

Thanks to Magi for sending this to me. Go to the website to listen to clips of the tracks.

Peter Rowan & Tony Rice: Quartet
http://www.rounder.com/index.php?id=album.php&catalog_id=6923

Acoustic music legends Peter Rowan and Tony Rice continue their fruitful collaboration with Quartet, which finds the pair joined by bassist/vocalist Bryn Davies and mandolinist/vocalist Sharon Gilchrist. Recorded after extensive touring, Quartet introduces a dynamic and cohesive band grounded in traditional bluegrass, yet capable of spinning out extended improvisational journeys. The band's repertoire is equally intriguing, ranging from songs by Townes Van Zandt and Patti Smith to bluegrass standards, traditional ballads ("Cold Rain and Snow"), and classic Rowan originals ("Dust Bowl Children" and a stunningly reinvented "Moonlight Midnight").

"The spellbinding synergy of Rowan's soulful serenades and Rice's masterful flatpicking ...it's almost as if the singer and accompanist are one in the same." - Bluegrass Now

"A musical marriage made in heaven." - Relix

Sharon to Support Nat Keefe at his birthday show!

The following is a message from Nat Keefe of Hot Buttered Rum: (already have my order in!)

On December 20th, I am producing the Nat Keefe Concert Carnival at the Independent in San Francisco. This multi-media variety show will feature luminaries I know from Ghana, the Hot Buttered Rum world, and my family: Matt Butler, Sharon Gilchrist, Tim Bluhm, Uncle Rodney, Dan Lebowitz, Steve Adams, Bo Carper, Phil Ferlino, Perry Sayoma Quarshie, Grandpa Buz, and all the members of HBR. We’ll be performing collaborations, and a lot of music I’ve written that doesn’t quite fit with HBR or that I’ve been saving for something else. This is that something else! Oh, and—it’s also my 30th birthday. Sounds fun—eh?

I hope you can come; please save the date and spread the word. This is the first major project I’ve done outside the band! We are selling Supporting Tickets to help underwrite the expense of this full-blown extravaganza. There can only be a limited number of these special seats, so act quickly!

The Nat Keefe Concert Carnival is a general-admission, partially-seated show, and the tickets will cost $13 d.o.s. Below are the three different pairs of Supporting Tickets.

1) Two Supporting Tickets: Reserved Preferred Seating—$60.

2) Two Donor Tickets: Reserved Preferred Seating, Backstage Pass—$100.

3) Two Patron Tickets: Reserved Preferred Seating, Backstage Pass, and complimentary dinner by Chef Angela (guess what kind of tequila you’ll be drinking…)—$200 or more.

The reserved tables are right in front of the stage. It’s the kind of show for which you want to be sitting down with a classy drink. You’ll be close enough to see the sweat flying from Uncle Rodney’s brow. Four chairs per table. Limited availability. Group discounts available. If you are interested in anything along these lines, gimme an email: Nat@HotButteredRum.net If you know anybody else who might be interested in the show and/or Supporting Tickets, feel free to pass this on to them.

Thank you,

Nat Keefe

I understand she teaches mandolin, I might just have to relocate to NM next year. But, I also heard from someone she created her own program of study in Nashville that was focused on the mandolin, does anybody have an answer to this inquiry? that would get me into school.

Wow! Whoever did this never lets Sharon off camera. Peter who? Tony who? LOL...

A musical question... maybe G or Hoops or someone can answer. Why is Bryn always jumping and dragging her bass behind whoever is soloing? Sound better that way?

I just checked and there are 4 seeders on this, so jump on it!
