<div>According to Kushner, the 13th-century text Sefer Ha-Temunah teaches that our present Hebrew alphabet is missing one letter, which will be revealed in the future, and that "every defect in our present universe is mysteriously connected with this unimaginable consonant" (p. 13). Kushner goes on to point out that the tefillin shel rosh bears a shin on each side: the regular three-tongued shin on the right side, but on the left side, a shin with four tongues.
