<div>Some of you many know that I was part of a collaboration with me, Sam, Kami and Moria on a tribal fundamentals instructional and performance DVD produced by the Bellydance Superstars. <br/>I am told that it will be released sometime this summer. My section focuses on floorwork and I focus heavily and conditioning and strength/flexibility training. I know that some people won't be happy that I don't dance more, but I felt like with the time I was allotted on the DVD, it would have been irresponsible for me to just bust out into hard core backbends, drops, etc... So basically, it's really very much an intro, but hopes are that it helps people really prepare for floor work so that they can execute the movements without hurting themselves. Plus it hopefully paves the way for me to do my own, much longer DVD!! <div>Sunday, September 21, 2008 <br/> <br/> Viva Barcelona! <br/>Current mood: adventurous <br/>Category: Dreams and the Supernatural <br/> <br/>Today at 4pm marks the end of my teaching obligations in Barcelona and I now have 2 entire days to explore and otherwise do exactly what I want (can you say boot shopping? New Rocks??). The perfect denouement to my workshops abroad was being able to take my gracious and disarmingly beautiful host, Salma, and her equally beguiling French boyfriend Sylvainn (no Jenny and Tom, I did not engage in some kind of tryst with them...) and his 2 most adorable boys to dinner. I actually got choked up when they dropped me off back at my hostel or hotel or hostile (when a certain man is working and refuses to lend me la pluma). They were so open and kind and beautiful and the boys absolutely charmed me to pieces...PIECES i tell you. I would have bought them condos if they'd asked me to (they settled for helado or ice cream instead...). The older one was 8 and kept telling me I was so beautiful 'muy guapa,' 'preciosa' (Mrs. Robinson syndrome kicking in again...) and the 6 year old was charm and future rock star personified. It was disarming how much confidence and charisma this kid had. And not an ounce of precociousness in him. It's not like that except for in the U.S. where obnoxious, precocious behavior is almost rewarded. People mistake obstinate obnoxiousness for confidence and advanced intelligence. This was just truly his personality that exploded through him. Undeniable beacons of light alerting the world to his charismatic presence. We lost and won thumb wrestling tournaments all evening... <br/> <br/>And the workshops! Wow, 4 hours a day. Exhausting in the sense that all of the students had this preternatural sense of dance. I was truly astounded. I pretty much blew through the first and half of the second workshop itinerary in the first workshop because these girls picked things up so fast--and most of them had only a rudimentary knowledge of english!! Some of them more than others (as I found out as they became more comfortable speaking as the day wore on). But the way they responded to body language alone! I just kept clucking away in English at the front of the class hoping that they'd maybe understand every 5th word (the way that I do here), expecting that I'd need to continually keep breaking things down and elaborating. But no. I'd do one demonstration of a pretty damn advanced combination and 90% of the class would get it. I felt a little sting of pride being hurt as I recalled that it had taken me several classes to grasp what I was teaching myself. <br/> <br/>And the show. Oh, the show! We got lost on the way to the theatre... a delight to me as I took everything in, rapt from the passenger seat of our French or Spanish car (nary a japanese car in sight!) The architechture, the obvious history, the realness of the landscape for lack of a better description! I could not help but compare my surroundings to LA... LA is all about sales. Selling oneself, selling a product, selling an idea.. so the point is that the whole landscape reflects this intention. Not so in Barcelona where the history would simply not allow for such temporarily interesting installments. No,this city had it's landmarks decided for it when LA was just a twinkle in Henry Ford's eye... <br/> <br/>The show was at this wonderful theatre. Reminded me of the Ivar where I once took delight in dancing where I knew Elvis had once performed on the same stage. It looked almost vaudville, though I have no idea how old it was. The lighting and the sound were wonderful and the performers again, blew me away. I had cause for serious new choreography inspiration. <br/> <br/>Suffice it to say that I've come along way from my initial reactionary (and decidely unfair) 'Barcelona or Purgatory' post on myspace. Though I hate to admit it, it was just as American of me as wanting a substantial breakfast and an unreasonably large cup of coffee (looking forward to 4 hours of workshop) in the am as it was to have an initial freak out of a new and unfamiliar environment. I freaked out because I was completely out of my comfort zone--a very american trait-- and because I had absolutely no control over my environment--a predicament that I should seriously look into reenacting more often. <br/> <br/>What helped me grasp how small-minded I was being (again, so reluctant to want to admit to my american-ness...shudder shudder...) was watching my sponsor familia <br/>interact. The children and adults so easily lapsing from Spanish to French to English. Sometimes using vocabulary from all three in one sentence... I thought, wow, once again, my world has become so miniscule... I long for the familiar, for the comfortable and "safe". But there were moments--moments in my classes, in the show and in the interaction with the family--particularly the children---where I longed to be more cosmopolitan in the sense that I also spoke 4 languages fluently and had the world view to go along with that knowledge. I felt as though a 6 year old was light years ahead of me at that (though in his Bono sunglasses, he could have convinced me of anything...). Now that's serious perspective... <br/> <br/>So grateful for this opportunity, this experience. To be seen and assessed as a 'good person' from a group who's opinion I hold dear and frankly timeless... People who were actually grateful, as opposed to horrified, that I had influenced their children... <br/> <br/>Ah, perspective, my old friend... <br/> <br/>Tomorrow I revert back into my american 'good little consumer' ways and go on a mission for boots.
