Re: Are you driven?
Wed, April 22, 2009 - 6:42 AMI'd better not be the only one who answers this : )
Technique, as much as I can get, as many different takes as there are available. It doesn't matter what style, all technique helps me in all of my dance. We just took workshops from a Cabaret dancer who taught crazy isolated technique. Where we held our hands and the flavor of the moves was different, but the muscle work is really what it was all about.
Determination. If I quit, I don't get anything, If I keep going, no matter how long it takes me, I can achieve anything. I actually think how bad I want it matters the most. Because that determination will keep me going through all of the rough times and if I don't have that, I got nothin and I go nowhere.
Also, a support system of some kind, like minded people I can share my ideas and experiences with. It would be harder if it was just me, but maybe not. Maybe I would still be hungry for belly dance the way I am if I was all by my lonesome : ) But the social aspect takes a back seat to my desire to improve as a dancer and see how far I can take this. -

Re: Are you driven?
Wed, April 22, 2009 - 8:51 AMAll right. I totally agree with Jenna.
Technique - and always always refining it. Constantly going back to the basics. Learning other forms and flavors of dance, so you know what the heck you *are* doing, and can consciously add those flavors or not, with purpose.
Determination - MAKING time to practice, even if it is only ten minutes a day, and even if it is with a toddler clinging to the legs. Taking all the times I feel I fell short and making sure next time is better. Constantly striving to make each performance better than the last, no matter how many times you've done the dance. Constantly looking for more in each class, and kicking my own butt to get the most out of each class.
My sisters in dance. I hold myself accountable to them - if I look bad, they all look bad. And that's just not fair to them. They push me to be better, they feed the hunger, they support and help me when I need it.
Watching other dancers of all forms looking for inspiration. Every form of dance and every dancer has the potential to inspire, even if it is just the look on thier face. -

Re: Are you driven?
Wed, April 22, 2009 - 2:31 PMI agree 100% with Jenna and Jeanne. I also want to add (and both of them kinda went there...) the community as a whole. Making connections and friends with others around the world who are passionate about the same (similar) things you are and learning and growing from each others ideas/cultures/experiences/dreams/etc. I always feel more driven to go further in dance after I hang out with and/or meet new people in this crazy artistic world community. -

Re: Are you driven?
Thu, April 23, 2009 - 9:41 PMAgreed, agreed, agreed..... I also need:
Inspiration. I have to be inspired regularly to avoid feeling stagnant. Sometimes this comes from experiencing phenomenal dancers, and sometimes the opposite. Either way, it helps propel them creative juices!
Risk. I have to take risks in order to feel unique. Sometimes the risk is doing what is expected and throwing in an added twist and sometimes it's trying the things that may very well work better driving in my truck than in reality. : )
Humility. No matter how amazing an achievement may be, you can never let it stifle your progress. There is always somebody better out there, and I focus on them intently.
Pressure. I LOVE to have someone biting at my heels! It keeps the fire lit under my ass!!
Love & Respect. Love my sisters, love the dance, love the challenge. Respect my sisters, respect the dance, respect those who came before me, respect those who will follow.
