New on Shira.net: Exposing the palms of your hands to the audience

A question that seems to bubble up periodically in the online places where belly dancers gather is this: "Is it okay to let the audience see the palms of my hands, or is that considered insulting to Arabs?"

A new article on my web site addresses this question. See www.shira.net/howtomove.htm

  • Thanks, Shira. This article clears up a lot of confusion.
I've been told from multiple sources in the bellydance world about this supposed taboo, but every single Arab acquaintance and friend whom I've asked about it could not confirm it or even see where we got this idea from.

As a dancer, I can see how holding your hands in positions where the palm is constantly facing the audiencie is very aesthetically unappealing, but culturally offensive is something else. Plus, it's impossible to never show even a glimpse of your palms throughout an entire performance, especially when there are audience members watching from many or all sides, like in a restaurant setting.
  • ^_^ this came up in the workshop i took with Diana Tarkan. part of the choreography involved a move similar to the one in your article from the Shareen video, and one of the dancers in the class asked her to clear up "the nonsense" about not showing your hand. she said "maybe it's more North African? this move isn't like hamza (warding off the evil eye)" it was funny how she'd never heard of such a taboo.
    • Hey there! I was at that Diana Tarkhan workshop too--she was actually pretty funny in her response to the question. She made a cutting motion to her neck while the dancer (Nahara, I think) was asking the question, with a facial expression that was very much "Give me a break!", then made her hand "pulse" in mockery of the hamsa connection. Loved her!
      • I've heard this particular rumor in a different light. My first instructor demonstrated a shoulder shimmy with "pretty belly dance arms" (arms out, palms down, chest lifted) and a slumpy shoulder shimmy with the palms straight toward the audience. It does make a big difference in appearance. Palms out is said to be a fav of strippers, because it unconsciously makes you seem more open and it looks a bit more "come and get me." I think it can often look trashy, so I tell my students to avoid it, but really that seems more like a western thing to me. And that's only referring to splayed hands straight out at the audience, not any sly glimpse of the palm. I do stress pointing the toes for both reasons of offense and because it looks lots prettier.
