Through my years as a student, my teachers taught me to append exit music after my performance which allow me to dance off the stage rather than walk off on silence. So I've always done it, not only in restaurants but also in haflas, seminar shows, etc. The way it works is that my set ends, and I pose, and then I have 2 seconds of silence to hold the closing pose, and then my exit music comes on, which is my cue to bow and leave the stage. My exit music is typically a 15-second snippet from one of the songs in my set (usually my finale) which fades out.
After moving to a different part of the country, I've noticed that people around here, even the professionals, typically don't do that.
So I'm curious - how many of you use exit music at the end of your piece, versus how many of you leave the stage in silence?

Re: Exit music - do you or don't you?
Sat, August 2, 2008 - 1:37 PMWhen our troupe performs....When we bow, the exit music starts. We always leave the stage to exit music which is usually a snippet of our entrance song. There can be a lot of us on stage at once, so our instructor/director makes sure that, after we bow, we don't dance out in awkward silence. (oh, yeah, we free dance out instead of walking).
Even though I haven't soloed yet, she's told me to never exit without music. In fact, I'd feel weird exiting in silence.
I like your method. Thanks for posting this. -

Re: Exit music - do you or don't you?
Sat, August 2, 2008 - 5:35 PMYep, I always use exit music.
It's especially helpful when you are not dancing a choreographed piece of music. I carry around a bunch various CD-sets of music, with varying lengths, depending on the venue, depending on the restaurant or club owner, etc, and how many times you dance each night, I can't always remember what the "last" song is for any given set. (I know, duh, but I can't keep track!)
So, I've got 6-8 exit songs that I instantly will recognize, and I always use one of those at the end of a set; it's a cue for me to nod or bow a "thank You", retrieve my veil or any other prop, and exit gracefully by the end of the music.
And yes, I know what you're thinking; I've got to *evolve* and put everything on an I-Pod...............I'll get there someday!
Hey!
What about live music? Now that I think about it, they usually give you some sort of a *bye-bye* rift at the end, don't they? I'm pretty sure, I'll have to pay more attention this weekend!

Re: Exit music - do you or don't you?
Sat, August 2, 2008 - 5:36 PMwe will use exit music sometimes when we have live drummers... what usually happens is that we take our bows and then turn to the band and applaud them, they will sometimes then start a drum jam and we all kneel to them as they play .. so in turns of an exit.. it's really more of a signal to an end to the show. SOmetimes we take another bow after they are done and file off stage. Then we will start the canned music and sometimes open the floor to folks who wanna come up and boogie... it really does depend on the type of show and the venue tho... ee gads tribal can be so different in how things are done. I'll have to ask my mom what she used to do back in the day.. I'm pretty sure she did either exit music where she danced off stage and a fade out.. but she danced to live drummers too.
when I solo I will either dance off or pose at the end and then bow and glide off stage or hold character (if it's a theatrical piece) and then glide off stage....
so many options... -

Re: Exit music - do you or don't you?
Mon, August 4, 2008 - 5:27 PMI noticed this at a festival I was at this weekend and it struck me how nice exit music is especially if is a piece from the set that the dancers danced to. I say dancers, because I've seen soloists do this, but this was the first time I noticed troupes doing it, and it was really nice. Something I would like our troupe to adopt! -

Re: Exit music - do you or don't you?
Tue, August 5, 2008 - 4:57 PMI always did as you with a fade snippet. However I can't name the number of times that I am smiling and bowing waiting for my exit only to look over at the DJ to see they have stopped and removed the tape (did I give away my age) or CD in preperation for the next dancer. Just another reason for a good Bow to go back to another post. -

Re: Exit music - do you or don't you?
Wed, August 6, 2008 - 6:13 AMGood point, Belda. Which (going back to the other post), after experiencing this phenomenon, I try to have music that fades out at the end, and I incorporate a nice spin and hand to heart/head nod/ and open arm gesture at the end thanking them for being a nice audience. they get it.

Re: Exit music - do you or don't you?
Wed, August 6, 2008 - 7:43 AMHmm... when I work with bands, they usually "play me out". With a CD, I don't usually use exit music, although I generally play myself out on the zils. I think exit music looks nice, though. :)
