Seeking a certain style of Cab costume...

Shira, I hope you don't mind me posting this question here. I'm asking in one other costume-related tribe, but there's not a lot of traffic there.

I am looking for a type of Cab (glam, glitz, whatever you'd like to call it) costume that is a little unusual. Cab costumes are usually heavy on the beads, sequins, fringe, etc. What I am looking for would qualify as a Cab costume, but the top is not a bra. It's a tie-front (or wrap-tie) top that is as heavily beaded as many cab bras are.

I have a pic to post that I found on the site of an online vendor. The costume is basically what I want, but it's a little light on the beading and sequins. I prefer more "ooomph" to a costume. As I was told once when I was a new dancer "there's no such thing as over the top" when it comes to costuming! :o)

I will post the pic in this album. I was just wondering if anyone might know of a vendor who sells such a thing.

Thanks in advance!

I forgot to mention...I would prefer a straight, long sleeve. Not a sleeve like the one pictured.

    Any leads?

In this photo my friend Cathie is second from the right in the blue top with shoulder cut outs and beads. It's kinda caby, and probably strong enough to withstand a couple more lightweight sequin appliques as is, and a lot more if a bra is sewn inside. I don't know where she got it, but if this is what you're looking for I'll ask her
      picasaweb.google.com/Discove...50258178

Fariha's right, heavy beading, like on cab bras, will pull most fabrics out of shape, esp knits.

This top came from Scarlets Lounge people.tribe.net/8661b372-...fa9a069af9 There's a bra sewn to the inside, the bra helps the soft knit velvet maintain shape and molds the top to my body. With a bra sewn inside, this top could support sequins and light fringe or pailettes. But not with out the bra.

I understand that you are looking for a top rather than a bra. But if you want lotsa lotsa on the top, I think the old standby of decorated bra and keyhole top is the best solution. Yes, they are two separate pieces, but if the bra is covered from the same fabric that the top is made of, and the top is shaped to dovetail exactly with the shape of the bra cups, and the decoration is arranged over both pieces as if they were one, it will look like one. I think maybe that last point is why you are shying away from this solution? Usually even when the top and bra match, the decorations, like fringe, are arranged very separately on the bra and top.

In first photo above I am in green and yellow on the far right. The green top has lots of beads sewn right onto it. I thought because I was edging with brocade ribbon and the fabric was woven, that it might support the weight of the beads. It does not. I really should have sewn a bra inside it, instead, the top is snapped to a bra at the shoulder seams, side seams, and center front.

I personally do not feel comfortable dancing in a bra only and always wear some sort of little vest or top. But that's just me :)

        Hi Helen,

Thanks, but that is definitely NOT what I am looking for.

The costume I saw once is a long sleeve tie-top and it had sequinned applique sprinkled all over it. No bra, although I would be more comfortable either wearing one underneath or sewing cups into the garment.

          Hi Mahin,

I have 2 other costumes Gail made for me that I am beading. It just takes soooooo much time to bead! I'm sure Gail can make *anything* but unless I can find some killer, pre-sequinned/beaded fabric, then I don't think I want to make that time investment.

Psssst..... wait until you see the green costume I'm working on. I'm lovin' it!!

            Bellatrix,

Great minds think alike! I already e-mailed Dahlal. Haven't heard back yet though (since I sent the note over the weekend). Maybe in a day or so. I'll let everyone know what I hear back.

              Bellatrix,

I looked at those Dahlal links you provided, and no, they are not what I'm looking for. They all still seem to have bras in them (or bra plus bolero jacket/shrug thingy). I would prefer just a tie top to be able to wear over an ordinary bra.

I think this style of costume is appealing to me because:

              * It would make for a super-quick change IN to or OUT of.
              * Much less time altering (shorten sleeves and/or maybe add a wee bit of elastic and voila...done).
              * A slightly different look from the other cab style costumes. Since I always wear long gloves, I thought, why not?

This would make a great base skirt that I found on Dahlal's website (their Akhet skirt): NL08-02S
(copy/paste that into the search box.)

And this top goes with it (Akhet top): NL08-01T

Hmmmm..... maybe I could find the time to sew on a bunch of pre-made sequin appliques...think, think, think.

I think she showed my your skirt for that a while back - very bootilicious!
I just visited the Costume Fairy today and she fixed me up something PINK :-)

Post pics of your project - I wanna see since I never run into you anymore!

              I couldn't help myself.

I went to the bellydancestore.com and ordered a purple version of that blue costume posted in the album. For $125, you cannot go wrong! I just got it in today's mail. It fits perfectly (with the only tailoring needed is the length...38" length when I'm only 5'0"...DUH!). But other than that, it's a great buy for the costume buck.

Oh,and I tried it on with just one of my daily-wear underwire bras...I tied the 2 ends of the top in a knot, slipped one end over the center of my bra, the other end under the center and then tied another knot. No bra peeking out of anywhere! And yes, it's super comfy.

              Yay!

Did you talk to Gail about this? She could make you a top with reinforced cup inside and if you wanted to save money - you could do the beadwork on it yourself. I know you are handy with that ;-)

She IS the miracle worker, after all...

from a seamstress' perspective, a non-bra that will hold up to the beading it sounds like you're looking for might defy the laws of physics. the fabric would have to be VERY strong and reinforced, which will make it stiff and hard to shape into a top like that, esp if you are not flat-chested. (the thicker fabric into darts is hard awkward, and i haven't seen any tops like that use princess seams that i can recall) then the front would still pull down and the back would ride up. you might be better off attaching a top like that to a bra and then attaching the cups over that, and blending the beading out, OR using light-weight sequins. (or blending out with sequins)
it sounds like ur not looking to diy it, but it might be a custom thing?
    good luck tho!
