This thought arose because I posted a translation to one of Hakim's songs on my web site last night...
I know there are millions of people around the world who love music by Hakim, and I know his music is immensely popular among belly dancers. But I have a confession to make - I've never really liked his music. When it comes to pop, I'd much rather hear a song by Shereen or maybe Amr Diab.
Now, if I'm watching a belly dance show and someone uses Hakim music for her performance, I try to ignore my dislike of Hakim and look for things to appreciate about her dancing. So don't worry - if I'm ever in the audience when you're dancing to Hakim I won't be snarking at you! But I don't see myself choosing to dance to his music or using it in class with my students.
Am I alone? Or are there others who share my, uh, esteem for Hakim's music?

Re: Hakim's music?
Sun, November 8, 2009 - 12:00 AMLOL Shira, that is so funny, tonight I attended a local hafla and one of the dancers did a cane piece to Hakim...I had to roll my eyes in my inside....you are not alone! Count me in the Hakim dislikers. Not my favorite, but if a teacher would choose it for a group choreo then I would suck it up and dance to it. I would not choose it for me. -

Re: Hakim's music?
Sun, November 8, 2009 - 5:07 PMI'm a little puzzled by this topic. Shira, why zero-in on Hakim? Do you feel the same way about Shakira?
Tastes in music vary as much as tastes in food. I personally cannot STAND onions yet my BF eats them raw. I like SOME Hakim (especially Ma Haddesh Ye Lomni), and SOME Amr Diab (esp. Mayal), and SOME Shereen, and SOME Alabina, etc. I don't like every piece of music these (or any other artist) has ever put out... well... except maybe for Led Zeppelin, but that's a different story altogether. :o)
Hakim, Amr Diab, Shereen, Led Zeppelin....it's all a matter of personal taste. I'm just a little confuzzled as to why poor little Hakim was targeted. -

I completely agree, it's all a matter of personal taste. I singled out Hakim because he's an immensely popular artist whom I happen to not care for, and I was just curious whether I'm alone in that opinion. As I said above, I promise that I won't hate on any dancers I see performing to Hakim's music, but I wouldn't choose his music for myself or my students.
How about everyone else? Is there an immensely popular MIddle Eastern artist that you just don't "get" even though everyone else around you seems to love that person's music? -

Re: Hakim's music?
Mon, November 9, 2009 - 3:50 PMI actually like Hakim. Perhaps it's because his music is a little kitschy and fun. I agree that the lyrics to Talakik are weird, but then I listen to the radio and can find 20 English language songs that are even weirder.
Personally, I can't stand anything by Dr. Samy Farag. I've tried, but no. I'm not sure why he's so popular.
I get a little tired of Natacha Atlas, too, but it may just be because so many dancers use her music. That doesn't mean that I don't think she's good. The slurring, repetitive words and wailing just get a little old sometimes. -

Re: Hakim's music?
Wed, November 11, 2009 - 3:42 AMI used to feel the same way. But then I was asked to do a group choreo to the song Elfred and I had less than a week to come up with. It was amazingly simple as his music followed a certain structure. It was a little bit repetative but still had some nice changes. So while I'm not an avid Hakim hater as I used to be, his music would not be my first choice for me personally but I would some songs in class or for group choreo. . I find his voice to grate on my ears if I listen to too much of it. But I was shocked when I discovered that my former teacher loves Hakim. She's a devotee of Oum Khalsoum and Abdel Halim Hafiz and MIchael Jackson. So go figure. -

Re: Hakim's music?
Wed, November 11, 2009 - 7:41 AMI think Shakira would fit the "uh, no thanks" role for me more than Hakim would. Her early album was fun. Now? No desire to hear or see her. Especially since the last time I saw her, on SNL, I could have SWORN it was Beyonce instead! What happened to the rock-chick?
