Hey did anyone see the Latvian woman on Britain's got talent? I don't know
how she made it to the semi finals, but she certainly did!!

With all due respect, how can a well-trained dancer
possibly dance to such a huge audience or any size audience
to the song "Lady Marmalade"?????

I want to hear what other dancers think.

I certainly don't think it brings the best out of a dancer not being able to dance to music you like, music you are familiar with etc. However a skilful belly dancer can dance to Western music- I've seen it done. Not a good idea for the less than competant and many less experienced dancers choose to dance to non-ME/Turkish music making the mistake that as it is familiar, they'll make a better job of a performane. WRONG! I tell students there's plenty of lighter/pop and ME/Turkish music and that is better that than dragging our "Dancing Queen" and this will complement their dance moves , Western music robably won't. It does not enhance your moves having to struggle to something like Lady Marmalade but I would imagine the dancer had a limited choice of tracks and this might have been the lesser of evils. She wasn't my style of dancer/not terribly skilful , certainly not a skilled as many British dancers (who wouldn't dream of entering a competition like this as they are not interested in a)pandering to the drooling Cowell or b) being humiliated by an ignorant auidence) but she was very presentable and glamorous and dressed a tasteful manner and entertaining for the GP (Genral Public) audience.
I can repeat that contestants do NOT get a free choice of music because of playing rights and fees and promoton etc. Neither Sophie Mei nor Urban Gypsies who reached the semis last year got a choice.
We may one day get a top class dancer who can present herself and our dance in the short space of time they are alloted but let's face they probably need a novelty factor or the panel won't be able to recognise "our kind of talent".
Frankly BGT has got more vital issues to addrees ie its' care of SN and under-age performers. Exploitation and degradation of performers are two distasteful aspects of this show. I watched a short snippet on what happened to a BDer called SnakeySue who performed with her creatures and got told "It was a shame her snakes weren't bigger" by Simon and Amanada tittered that she "slithered off stage". She was a long established entertainer in the UK (I have now idea of the quality of her dancing and I don't approve of dancing with snakes anyway) but I dare say she has actually harmed her career by entering the comp.

          I love "Dancing Queen"

Okay so I don't belly dance to it but I used to dance around my bedroom to it when I was a kid. : )

I was a good deal older when it first came out and love it to but I have seen it trotted out for belly dance performances and shall I say it didn't do the dancers any favours..GRIN....Waterloo...Waterlooo..GRIN

Oh I feel even more sympathy for her now!
So this show HAS taught what it pretended to teach with Susan Boyle: Dont be so quick to judge.

On another note I think I said it on the other thread:
The Lady Marmelade and Shakira acts will get many young girls interested in the dance who probably would not bother to look at it more closely had she danced a drum solo only. It will ultimately increase interest in the dance IMO, just like Shakira did. Much criticized by "purist" bellydancers (who I agree with!), but ultimately her mainstream approach bred many new bellydancers who are now purists as well.

That was meant to be in response to the article link that Liz put up on Julia crying after being forced to change what she wanted to perform, it annoys me that when repying to someones post, the reply is then put at the bottom of all the replies and makes no sense when read...doh.
                  • This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

Yes it's shame Tribe doesn't cater more easily for quotes.
However Louise..I do take the point that one reply to the blog makes...why not make a stand and refuse to dance that music especially if you are concerned that your performance will not show your ability to dance in a good light. But I suppose the chance to appear on national TV is a great temptation to someone who hopes to earn their living dncing. I know this experience did Sophie no harm(and she's a lovely girl) but Julia is obviously concerned about the way the community has perceived her. Dancers really do need to consider the value of this manipulative show. These people mishandle and abuse contestants and unless you go in for it with your tongue firlmly in your cheek, I think it' s far safer to save your talent for another platform especially a minority and misunderstood form of entertainment as ours is.

That's exactly how I see it.

And how nice that somebody has put her situation in perspective. This is a great reminder for all of us to never be quick to judge so harshly when we have no clue about the circumstances the person is going through. I never thought Julia was that bad although it wasn't my cup of tea and I really disliked the choice of music (which appears to not have been hers, anyway), but this article shed a new light into her performance. I now think she did a wonderful job with what she had.
