    • I have this book. IMHO, it is not worth the $30 price of book + shipping.

This 100+ page book feels quite hefty, but the pages are printed on one side only. Many pages have just two simple sketches, and many of the sketches are nearly identical.

This book is aimed at an intermediate to advanced sewer. There's simple sketches of basic pattern pieces for a choli, harem pants, shalvars (Indian pants) and circle skirts. But, only the harem pants section includes construction suggestions. No where does it explain how to translate those basic sketches into useable pattern pieces.

The skirt section includes vague and somewhat garbled suggestions for posing and measuring your body to find the best length for the top of a three tiered skirt - then renders the whole procedure pointless by finally explaining that the best length is 5 - 8 inches depending on your height. The book includes sketches of Ghawazee coat pieces, but suggests the reader purchase a commercial pattern for constructing Ghawazee coats, vests, and shirts.

All of this information and more is readily available for free on the internet at Shira's site and here on Tribe.

Some of the idea sketches are interesting, but aside from a handful of "tips" at the beginning of each chapter, the book gives no clue how to turn the rough sketch into a garment or create the featured design details.

It isn't cheap to print, bind, and ship a 100 page book. I think this would be a better (and, no doubt, cheaper) publication if it were edited properly and condensed into 40 or fewer pages. Include basic construction instructions for each style of garment. Choose an organizational format for the informative section of each chapter, and stick to it throughout all chapters. Reduce the size of the sketches, to four or six or eight per page, eliminate the ones that are nearly identical, and print on both sides of the paper. When a design detail is the main feature, a little information about construction or supplies would be incredibly helpful because the crude line drawings are not particularly informative.

My opinion only, your millage may differ
