I was recently invited to join another tribe whose primary purpose is to alert dancers to a man who is exhibiting stalker behavior toward some belly dancers. This started me thinking about the larger subject of safety for dancers. It seems like a subject a lot of dancers don't think about.
Some years ago I wrote an article about this for my web site - see www.shira.net/safety.htm . In researching that article, I asked a friend who used to run a singing telegram company what tips she might be able to share, and I was VERY surprised to learn that she had never really given the issue much thought, and really hadn't taken any precautions with her own safety when delivering messages.
So here are some questions that I'd be interested in people's thoughts on...
Is personal safety something that YOU have considered as a dancer?
Do you take an escort with you when you dance at private parties?
What measures do you take to guard your own personal safety?
What kind of behavior from callers or people who approach you at gigs triggers your "weirdo alert"?
Do you publicize your home address or phone number as a way for people to contact you?
I'm always surprised when people sign up for my teacher/performer directory and provide their home telephone numbers and mailing addresses. (I list my cell phone number instead of my home number, because once someone knows your land line phone number, it's a simple matter to find your home address from it. Anyway, even though my directory says, "Most people who don't have a P.O. Box leave this blank because they don't want to put their home address on the Internet. It's up to you," it seems like a lot of people provide their home addresses for the directory. Then I get annoyed when a month after I post the information they provided they send me URGENT emails INSISTING that I delete their home addresses IMMEDIATELY.
The registration for my web site domain, www.shira.net, gives a PO Box address, not my home. I teach my classes at a studio, and will continue to do so even after my current remodeling project of adding a new dance studio to my basement is done because I have no intentions of publicizing my home as a location that strangers are invited to come to.

Re: Dancers and Personal Safety
Fri, August 25, 2006 - 12:35 PMFor me personal saftey is always a first. I always have an escort, no matter the gig. I check out the location anonymously before I dance there. And rely heavily on what I feel. If I get a weird feeling then I say NO. Nothing is worth the loss of my children's mother...ME!

Re: Dancers and Personal Safety
Fri, August 25, 2006 - 1:21 PMI am only a student so I don't know the particular safety dangers for dancer, but I am an artist model, which means that I pose for artists and photographers (often in the nude). There are plenty of people who would love to try to take advantage of this vulnerable position.
When someone contacts me about a possible gig, I try to feel them out. There are certain terms and lingo that serious artists will use. I find out what the artistic goal of the project is. What type of poses will the person need. Sometimes, the person will say all the right words yet I feel uneasy. I do not take the gig. I believe that fear is useful. I can find another gig, but if I lose my sense of safety, nothing can bring that back.
I guess this can be modified for pro dancers- There are probably certain things that someone who is serious about hiring a dancer will say. I assume they will want a certain style and mood, music to fit the party/ restaurant, etc. They will probably want to know some technical information so they can have equipment ready for you, etc.
If you're not sure, you could ask certain questions about the location and guests. See how they respond. Is there hesitation? Does the person sound like they are making things up on the spot?
You can also ask for references. Ask them what was the reason they decided that a belly dancer would be a good choice for the entertainment that day. Have they ever hired dancers before. What was the experience like? What would they like to see done differently? Does their response give you the creeps, or make you feel more comfortable?
Don't feel pressured to accept a gig immediately. It's okay to say that you have to follow up with some tentative bookings and call back. It's your safety and it deserves time.

Re: Dancers and Personal Safety
Sat, October 14, 2006 - 6:18 PMToday I posted a new survey on my web site regarding the issue of personal safety for belly dancers. This would apply to students attending classes, teachers teaching classes, and performers of all skill levels. I invite everyone to visit the survey and share your own attitudes and experiences. Here's the location of the poll:
www.shira.net/polls/safetypoll.htm
I look forward to seeing the results of the responses! -

Re: Dancers and Personal Safety
Sat, October 14, 2006 - 9:55 PMShira thank you for posting this topic!!! It is so important...
About your Qs...
Is personal safety something that YOU have considered as a dancer? YES!!!
Do you take an escort with you when you dance at private parties? Yes always.
What measures do you take to guard your own personal safety?
I never go to a show alone. I carry a weapon for self defense
What kind of behavior from callers or people who approach you at gigs triggers your "weirdo alert"?
Anyone can be a nut that is why I never go alone to a show but anything "sexy" they say or if they ask me for a "private" dance these are red flags. Also I do not perform at someone's house I do not know. I perform in public places - like a country club or restaurant.
Do you publicize your home address or phone number as a way for people to contact you?
NEVER!!!
