So here's a question: my hair's pretty short (obviously) but I love the way falls and beaded strands look on. Any ideas on how to attach them without it blatantly looking like their attached to a headband?

Re: falls for shorter hair
Thu, July 13, 2006 - 7:53 PMthey say (they being braiders/extensioners) all you need is 2-3" of hair to braid in falls/dreads individually...and from the picture, it looks like you've got at least that.
Besides that:
you know those soft circular hair bands with teeth? They're like a zig-zag around your head? It's very easy to make them into a "dreadband" by attaching the falls along the teeth, and covering up the band-area with a headscarf or headpiece. You can add further depth by doing the same thing to hair combs. My zar performance on the Niger Benefit DVD---the dreads were mainly attached in this manner, and I didn't lose any of them. -

Re: falls for shorter hair
Thu, July 13, 2006 - 8:24 PMInteresting idea. Ive cut my hair since that picture. Made lab work over the summer easier. it'll probably be the length it is in the picture again before too long. But the headband with teeth is a good idea. I hadnt thought of that!

Re: falls for shorter hair
Fri, July 14, 2006 - 9:07 AMTempest had a good idea---though my hair's really slippery so I don't know if they'd stay in (combs certainly don't, even bobby-pins have trouble). But, I did have some luck attaching regular yarn-falls to my hair. I made tiny ponies (my hair's about 3 inches long) and popped the falls over and bobby-pinned the heck out of them. Stayed in fine. They weren't super-heavy yarn falls, though. -

Re: falls for shorter hair
Fri, July 28, 2006 - 11:00 AMHi there! If you're having problems with bobby pins, buy some from a hairstylist. The professional ones DO NOT fall out. I have silky hair too but my friend did my hair for our last performance and her pins stayed in beautifully. She's a hairstylist so she knows all kinds of tricks. Also, make sure you cross the pins like an "X" shape. It really helps them stay put. I actually had a heck of a time getting them all out!
Hope that helps! -

Re: falls for shorter hair
Mon, August 14, 2006 - 8:33 PMMy biggest problem is that my hairstyle is a 1960s look, shaved up the back side (about one-eighth inch in length) until about 2 inches from the crown - a concave (short in the back, longer in front), bowl-looking style. What this means is that I have nothing in back of my head to attach anything to and only about 2-3 inches in crown area and along the sides. What's working against me is that my hair is smooth and straight, but what's working for me is that my hair is thick. Bobby pins don't always work well for me unless I use a million of them, by which time my head hurts. Have others had success with falls with really short hair like mine? Strong clips or haircombs of some kind? Particular styling products? Or do I need to plaster my head with bobby pins?

Re: falls for shorter hair
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 12:45 PMHi all! New to bellydance costuming and I have shortish hair -- it's a bit of a bob kind of style. I've started making my own yarn falls to experiment with because I love the "two top buns with big poofy hair falls" look combined with a headband of sorts, and I can't seem to get that to look right on me.
When you ladies say "bobbypin the heck out of 'em" for hair falls, how do you keep the bobbypins from showing? Do you just deal with it? Do you cleverly hide them with parts of the falls? -

Re: falls for shorter hair
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 1:01 PMHi Caryn-
I do both - by this I mean I both "cleverly hide" and cover them. I have aubrun hair, and the bobby pins I use are a brown-ish red color, so the pins sort of match my hair color. Then I use a decorative scarf should the pins still be really obvious. -

Re: falls for shorter hair
Sun, March 23, 2008 - 7:10 AMone of the big 'secrets' is to flip your head upside down and hang the falls down forward as you attach them. Pin and clip the hell out of them from the underneathe. This will give you extra volumne as well as security close to your head.... when you are done simply flip your head back and your hair is now up and back. =) -

Re: falls for shorter hair
Thu, June 12, 2008 - 11:02 PMI use the ponytail style, and since I have a severe bob with lots of little bits at the back that I can't get into the pigtails, so I use a strong gel to smooth my hair so it looks smoother. I also aim my falls to the back of my head to create the look of full long hair.

My bangs are the longest part of my hair, the rest angles up over my ears and higher to the back. I believe as long as you can get about a two inch pigtail you can band in falls, and have.
